Now in E22 with Buffy basically doing the same thing minus the chains it's now an empowerment metaphor...

I think the inference is that what the shadowmen did was already done, to the First Slayer as well as all the other Potentials in the world through bloodlines or destiny or whatever.
So they were 'imbued' already but the spell that was used kept it to 'one girl in all the world' because it was a patriarchal system of control.

By activating all the slayers that are already infected then she's giving ALL girls a choice that was denied to them or would continue to be denied to them. This spell was already forced on them, now they get to do what they want with it. It's a small but important distinction. 'Are you ready to be strong'.

There are problems with the idea of giving loads of women unearned superpowers, that had been highlighted previously (ahem Faith) and would be explored in Angel S5 and the Buffy comics.

I disagree about the racial stereotype part. The first slayer was African and she was turned into a slayer there, it would be weird if they were any other ethnicity.

Entirely agree. I always thought it would've been far more racist to flip it and have the slayer-line be entirely made up of white women, like 'no ethnic diversity at all, they're all blonde-haired, blue-eyed super powered chicks. No-one else please.'

To me the First slayer makes sense but then there are those who project race issues onto everything and so she becomes 'problematic'.
Just like the Chinese slayer and Nikki Woods are problematic in relation to the way they are killed. Would it really've been better if they'd all been Caucasian?

genghiskhan I mean all slayers have violent deaths people who complain about their deaths because they were people of colour confuse me.

Just a clarification, those two slayers were killed by a white, English vampire. Some find this symbolic.
