I completely forgot about the plot of both of these, though I read them when they came out and they are on my bookshelf. Is that terrible?

It's a very bad sign. 9x out of 10, if I've forgotten that much in less than 10 years (or even longer) then I realize why when I read or watch it again, so as a rule of thumb, I assume it's for the best.
