Besides the cannon fodder slayers, I don't think the Chosen battle was the right moment for anyone important to die. It was all about empowerment, beating the odds, etc. Losing someone important along the way would have been counter productive of the big picture.
I think the reason Anya was killed off was because there was nothing left for her character. She had already come into being human, and although she and Xander had so much love for each other they weren't in love anymore. Had the show continued for an 8th season on tv (which it almost did), I think Anya would have faded out anyway.
And I think Wood survived because it would have been stereotypical if the only black main character was the only one to die...lmao
