Christmas Banned?

This time of the season has been celebrated for a lot more years than it's been Christmas. And well before it ever was Christmas. Somebody changed it then, and using a lot more force to do so than anyone is trying now. Note: I like Christmas, myself; I like the images, the themes, and the messages. I'll fight by whatever means necessary to prevent any religious group from infringing on people's right to worship as they see fit. But people who want to freak out over a few loony extremists need to step back and take a look at how the season was taken away from the original celebrants. Even though I totally disagree with the "No Christmas" bunch (including various Christian sects who have historically opposed the Christmas holiday - you all might do a little research before you blame everything on secularists, atheists, or pagans,) these things do go in cycles. Maybe if Christians had been a little less with the "convert'em or kill'em" method of supplanting other religious groups, they wouldn't have to worry about a backlash.
 
BotD, the Christmas tree story is from 2005. The people of Boston rose up a cry against the fact they were being told to stop calling their Christmas tree a Christmas tree, and yes they are allowed to call it a Christmas tree again in 2007. What's your point?

Christmas isn't hurting anybody. They should leave it alone. They aren't though. It's being attacked from both religious and non-religious sources. The media is reporting on it, and personally I expect them to.

This phenomena of attacking Christmas can be objected to by religions, but objections don't have to be religious. Christmas has become a secular celebration. In fact if we want to attack inept analogies based on stilted interpretations why would you suggest some kind of religious hypocrisy in Angel Baby 101's statement with your Christ analogy. She clearly says her enjoyment of the season is about family. She doesn't mention religion.

There's nothing in The Chosen's analogy saying he's anti-Muslim. He doesn't have to explain to you it's not racist. It's not. Quite frankly the only one I see trying to turn this into a Muslim versus Christian issue is you.
 
All I know, is I spent 30 minutes trying to find Christmas cards yesterday that actually said "Merry Christmas".

They are just not regulary made anymore. They all say Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings or some crap like that. If it's becoming 'pc' to involve others in the holiday spirit who don't celebrate Christmas (and really, not many people celebrate the true meaning of Christmas--meaning celebrating Christ's birth) then there should be equal amounts of material for those who wish to pass on "Merry Christmas" and those who wish to celebrate otherwise.

Strange. Hallmark had several that I noticed when I bought mine. Neither of the boxes I bought say it - but, then, they don't say either of the others you mentioned, either. Just a nice verse (one's even from the Bible.)

Admittedly, I did not go to Hallmark. I should've though. They're sometimes the only ones that have good stuff.
I decided to get myself some chrissie cards, so I wandered into a local hypermarket, lots 'n' lots of choccies, must admit I was tempted, but no chrissie cards at all !
 
And that's really peculiar. Every place I go into here has them: book stores, supermarkets, variety stores like Wal-Mart & K-Mart, mom-and-pop stores of all kinds - hell, half the gas stations even have a few boxes.
 
There are christmas cards out there but not that many anymore honestly most of them do say Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings.... It is getting a tiny bit harder to find Christmas Cards in some places
 
I'm 52, and Happy Holidays/Season's Greetings has been a staple of Christmas cards as long as I can remember. Nor can I tell that the selection of cards is any smaller than it's ever been. Just as a brief example, I was in Barnes & Noble and Joseph-Beth Booksellers this week and both of them had two or three entire racks or tables full of different cards. Even the local Kroger had at least two display racks full. I think some of you guys are so paranoid that you're seeing problems where none exist.
 
I work at happy harrys and i have put out a good 8 huge boxes if not more of Christmas cards and most of them said happy holidays and seasons greetings i think maybe a handful of them said Merry Christmas its not that we are paranoid nor seeing things its the fact that in some places it just may be the truth now not to disrespect your age sir but quite frankly my grandmother is 73 and even she has noticed the lack of some christmas cards and has been complaining so its not just being paranoid its facing the facts....
 
(shrug) I just find it very peculiar that experiences can vary so widely between parts of the country not that far apart. It also appears to me that the people who complain the most about not being able to find "suitable" Christmas cards tend to be predisposed to think there's an issue. Me, I don't care if my cards specifically say "Merry Christmas" or not, and I don't have any problem finding some that do. YMMV.
 
I do most of my shopping at Target and Wal-mart and I noticed that a lot of the cards there didn't have Merry Christmas on them. I bought some that say Happy Holidays or some such, but I looked through a bunch before I picked the ones I bought and noticed the lack. Even the "religious" cards didn't say it. I thought it was kind of strange, really!
 
Today I picked up a Christmas card, and....and....**gasp**....... it said Happy Valentine's Day!!!! AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that "Happy Holidays" sounds a bit sterile, but I fail to see why it's taken so personally, I just don't. Christmas is important to people, fair enough, but... I mean... why is there a terror that the Government is going to take it away some how? They can't diminish your own celebrations. Christmas is about what it means to you personally, rather than what the Man thinks.

I work in a toyshop, I work seventy hours a week this time of year, and I still love Christmas. The sole downside of the Christmas season for me is the religious element, and it does bother me a lot. Like, it doesn't keep me awake raging at the injustice of it all, it just makes me feel like I'm being left out in the cold a little, at exactly the time of year when I'd... well. When I want to be doing the whole ugly-jumpers-by-the-fire bit with my family and friends.
