Just a little question to ask if anyone knew what Faith actually got Buffy & her mum for their 'crappy' Christmas presents?

I don't remember them opening presents. How did you know their presents were crappy?

I think that she got Joyce a cheap piece of Jewelry at the last minute.

Buffy probably got a more 'personalized' gift-a pair of (stolen) handcuffs...

Was Faith talking about her present or theirs?

Faith was talking about the gifts she'd just given Joyce. As in 'don't get your hopes up. They're crappy because I have zilch in the way of cash'.

I always thought that it was really thoughtful given Faith's complete lack of visible funding (I still don''t know how she paid for her motel room or food and such).

As for what she got them both- one of the gifts looks like a long, slender cylinder, so it could be a scented candle, a necklace or (most likely) a nicely whittled stake. I could see Faith giving Buffy that.
The other's just a small box so- cheap jewelry or perfume probably.

I was definitely thinking possible stake for Buffy, even though that present seemed a little small for one of those.

I thought it looked like a small book - maybe a diary or something, which would fit within the extremely limited budget she obviously had.

Also just after she tells her mum not to touch her present otherwise she'd know what it was (although that might have been for her own present to her mum), added to that the fact it was never made clear which present was for whom I never did figure out what they really were.

That would fit. Or maybe a funny desk calendar- you can get one of those for a few bucks at Barnes & noble.

Doesn't Faith point to one of the presents and say 'that one's for your Mom' to Buffy.
Later Buffy tells (shouts downstairs) that her Mom shouldn't touch hers otherwise she'll know what it is- but its not clear what present she's talking about, maybe the ones she bought herself.

The joy of netflix. Looks like a 4" by 6" by 1" shape that would fit any of the suggested options.

The box/book/calender.

The other present is a little bigger than I thought, maybe nearly a foot long, so might be a stake.

Quite possibly, this was the first time that Faith had ever gotten anyone anything for Christmas, and just as possibly, this was the first, or at best, the very few, times that she had been asked to share the holiday with anyone. Given the lack of experience, the lack of ready cash, and the lack of time involved (she probably didn't actually decide to go until the very last moment, and I challenge anyone to find something both inexpensive and appropriate on Christmas Eve, especially when you have no experience with that sort of thing) the gifts were, by anyone's standard, pathetic at best, crappy at most, but that just makes Faith's effort all that much more poignant. She was really trying to show her gratitude for being included in Buffy's family celebration. Hopefully, after all the crisis was handled, Joyce, Buffy, and Faith finally got to enjoy at least part of holiday together. Too bad we never got to see it.
