Christmas

Bare ground right now, but they said 1-3 inches was supposed to fall two hours ago. I didn't believe and I didn't see it. It's probably not heading your way right now.

It wasn't. We got a dusting which melted as soon as the sun came out.

But... we had snow squalls all day today and about 2 inches, so a white Christmas after all. Would have been nice to have it in the days leading up to Christmas, but better than nothing.

Was a pretty good Christmas. New Year is still to come, and then to face all the unpleasant things I was putting off until after the holidays.

How common is it to do the main Christmas celebration on Christmas Eve around the world?

Many use this day to do a second run of course, visit those they couldn't visit yesterday and so on.
But the main event is already over here. How common is that?

Christmas day is the big one for Aussies. My family is a bit different to the norm because I have such a large blended family. We would have Chirstmas Eve dinner with the immediate (blood) family. Then we would trek to the city for midnight mass, checking out the chirstmas lights on the way. We were allowed one pressie before bed when I was young. The unwrapping of pressies was in the morning, followed by an epic breakfast feast, including seafood cocktails and an endless buffet of amazing fresh food made by my mother. Sometimes we would nap after that, or go to the beach to play cricket/footy/swim with the sharks. Next was driving to where ever the step family had their do, this was a HUGE extended family event. LOTS of fatty, heavy food and excessive alcohol and ridiculous pressies by the pool or river (this year they hired out a beach side resort and will dine in the wine region).

Boxing Day (the 26th today) is the recovery/eating day. In recent years the laws have changed to allow shopping centres to open and there has been a surge in boxing day sales. I have no idea why so many flock to the shops on this day - there are some bargains but mostly its a gross sweaty crowd of aggressive (possibly still drunk) people.

For me, I have been trying to move away from the commercial christmas. Christians have lost christmas to the consumer culture, this is the first year I have managed to avoid the gift giving all together and it has been SO RELAXING! Also it wasnt blazing hot were I am now - thankfully! Santa arrived in town on a firetruck with the sirens going, collecting the children for a ride on the back while throwing out lollies to anyone who greeted him. I had a nice morning walk and watered the garden and then slept in the quiet. I have never felt this good physically on a boxing day before haha. Its awesome and refreshing.
