Anyone seen the news about a Doctor Who spin off called Class. In the bits I've read it says it's being dubbed a British Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Will you be watching? I'll probably give it a go as I'm a Doctor Who fan, though I don't expect it to be anything like Buffy
 
Pretty much every UK sci-fi/fantasy show seems to get labelled "British Buffy", so yeah I'd definitely take it with a pinch of salt.

I'll wait for some clips to decide whether or not I'm watching. Haven't watched Doctor Who in ages and I really went off Torchwood.
 
It sounds more like Grange Hill than Doctor Who. Also it'll be on BBC Three, so most people will pass it by. I've not seen anything on Three since it went online (which is a shame, because it pioneered some fantastic shows when it was on the normo-TV)

But as for the British Buffy.... only time will tell, but I doubt it. The BBC are struggling with budget cuts right now, lots has been cancelled prematurely or not had a decent enough budget to actually be worth it, so they won't spend the money on it unnecessarily. With it also being an online only show, that will affect the budget even more so I worry for the quality of the writing and production.

But they've only just started filming, so it could surprise us all later on in the year!
 
When I saw it advertised, it was for BBC America, so the US may get to see it before the UK. Hopefully if it's good enough and gets enough viewers it will end up on tv

If it's in conjunction with BBC America, I presume it'll have a bit more cash spent on it then, which will be good. I doubt it'll ever be shown on TV in the UK though. It'll only go to BBC 1 or 2 if it's a massive ratings hit, and with Three being online, I doubt the ratings will be that big.

But.... it is in the Whoniverse, so you never know! 😉

Its funny how for a long time BBC3 was so God awful and then just as it seems to be getting better it gets moved online😀

Yeah we seem to struggle to come up with something as original as Buffy when it comes to Sci-Fi or certianly anything quite like it. The best we do are a few limp gestures here and

BBC Three was god awful up until the point it went online, but the BBC did that on purpose to reduce viewing figures and force the channel online. Years ago it was a fantastic source of high quality comedy and drama; Being Human, The Fades, Gavin and Stacey, Him and Her and In The Flesh are all cracking examples. I'll never forgive them for cancelling The Fades and In The Flesh. Never.

The less said about Don't Tell The Bride and Snog Marry Avoid, the better. Although Danny Dyer's I Believe In UFOs was a real underrated treat. 😉

I think it just proves how fantastic and original BtVS is. It's something a lot of shows want to emulate, but they all fail. It's peerless and inimitable.

Fair enough, but you have to weigh all those good programmes out with the overall output and just how many of those were bad. It does show than in the past at least they've got it right.

I think The Fades and In the Flesh got cancelled because of a little something called ratings or lack of. Sadly, even the BEEB are not inmure to such a thing. If it were there's no way Jeremy Clarkson would have kept his Top Gear hosting job for so long.

Yeah, I remember the feeble Hex as being our answer to Buffy at one point😉

I remember loving Hex when it first came out. I bought the DVD for 90p from Amazon and re-watched it a couple of years back and it was so bad! But I also remember saying back in 2004 that Michael Fassbender was destined for big things, purely based on his role in Hex.... and look at him now. 😀

To be fair to it, the first series was superior to the second, which was literally a pile of drivel. At least Buffy's second season took the principles from the first and made it better, Hex just got progressively more and more daft.

There are probably lots more examples of "The new Buffy", but they're all long gone. I wonder why that is.... 😉
 
I might revisit Hex just to see Fassbender as I didn't know he was in it🙂 I'm more surprised that Keira Knightley wasn't involved somewhere along the line?😉
 
Believe me when I say that Fassbender is by far the best thing in that show. 23 year old me thought he was the bees knees (still do!) , but yeah, it was one of his first roles I think. He plays a great villain.

I'm not sure I understand the Keira Knightley comment. She wasn't in Hex, was she?

No I was joking because her tendency to show up playing posh, bitchy English school types early in her career😛
 
Oh yeah, I forgot the posh bitchy English schoolgirl trope - she would have been perfect for that when she started out. There were posh school girls in Hex, but they were so forgettable I actually forget they were in it!
 
Did anyone see the Being Human spinoff Becoming Human?

I'd have loved that to become a series.

I'm quietly hopeful about Class, maybe she's just been lucky but Katherine Kelly seems to be good at picking scripts.
 
I think I saw that, or maybe it was a dream or maybe I hoped it was a dream. It was the sort of show that you look forward to the adverts for something interesting to watch.
 
Great that they are having LGBT lead characters, think every tv show should be representative of the society they reflect.

But what really irks me is that they say Jack Harkness appears in Season 1 of Doctor Who. The first season of Doctor Who was in 1963! Doctor Who didn't start with Chris Eccleston in 2005. Maybe I'm being too pedantic 😱

I think it's common to refer to Old Who as either season or series and then New Who as the other. So Season 1-23 and then Series 1-9
