Yes, I also thought that it was pretty weird how fast they forgot about Jesse.
They also don't seem to have a real problem with his death. At the end of the episode they seem quite happy.
I would be devastated if my allegedly best friend had died and I probably would spend a few days at home.

That was just bad writing(or the networked forced a happy ending, I don't know). The Sunnydale-denial can only explain so much, I mean, Willow & Xander lose a friend, who Xander killed, yet the end of the episode have a happy endning and Jesse's never mentioned again.

I had the feeling they had known each other for a while, and even if they didn't, that should still hurt. Just see how everyone reacts to Cassie's death in season 7, yet they barely knew her. That's good writing and it feels realistic.

It happens a lot in the show. People they are close to die and they seem to move on pretty quickly.
 
I personally didn't care or really notice that they never mentioned Jesse again haha but when someone pointed it out to me I was like, "Oh yeah, that guy." and it made me realize that it was kind of unrealistic. But did they make it clear that they had known him since childhood? Not that they needed to, in order to mourn his death. I mean I'm sure that they knew him longer than Angel and Cordy knew Doyle and they thought about/mentioned him often. I guess the writers felt it was unnecessary to bring Jesse up again because we the audience didn't know him at all. So while I found it slightly unrealistic, it's something that I have totally overlooked/don't really care about. It also would have been nice or interesting if they had brought that actor back to play The First...but think about it, he would have been too old to play the part. Way too old.

I was so surprised because he had a own part in the intro of season 1. If I remember me right Jenny hadn't ? That confused me! But to be honest I wasn't really sad that he left the show! He was interesting and I think some more episodes with him would have been great but all in all they handled his death ok. Not good but not too bad to get any miscredits. And yes in my eyes they forgot him too fast.
 
They were so inexperienced in Season 1. I love The Master, but he was pretty lame compared to other Big Bads. Even Angel was scared of him.

Season 1 was good TV, but nothing great. "Great" didn't happen until Season 2.

It was weird and I think it did go kind of fast but since the show was just starting I don't think they wanted to get all down just yet.
 
I think it was bad writing.

However, a plausible in-story subtext is that Jesse wasn't that close of a friend. He was just someone who hung out occasionally with Willow and Xander because he, like they, were social outcasts. An acquaintance rather than a friend, like Amy was later.

Even so, I would think we would have seen more emotion for the passing of an acquaintance than what we saw on screen.
 
I always figured what happened to Jesse is the reason why Xander hates vampires so much... And I mean, we may not see it on-screen, but off-screen they could have had a mourning time. It was still the beginning of the series, I don't think they wanted to make it too dramatic yet.

And I could have sworn that Jesse was mentioned once or twice later on? I may be wrong though.
 
I think Jesse is more Xander's friend than Willow's. Xander insisting on saving him, his strong reaction to his death, him trying to get to Jesse before killing him all show me that he really loved and cared about him.

Willow, on the other hand, wasn't sad or upset about Jesse's death the way Xander was, so I assume she and Jesse weren't friends.

I don't think Xander got over his death quickly as much as keeping his feelings bottled up inside, this is what he did when Anya and Renee died. He doesn't mourn openly, and deals with pain by making jokes. Not to mention that what happened to Jesse shaped how he views vampires in general.
