Cleveland Hellmouth?

I was going to say the same, Im sure in Cleveland the towns folk would have had someone helping to keep the evil population down like a Rogue Demon Hunter or maybe a small group of vigilantes. I expect the Watchers Council was probably keeping an eye on that place as well.

Clevelanders. People of Cleveland? Or potentials who're from there?
I mean, yeah, people there in season eight, but before that, probably anyone who tried. Or, demons centered more around Sunnydale because they could kill the slayer, so it wasn't as busy.

Maybe it was there but inactive until the Sunnydale one closed? So demons knew it was there but they knew there was no point going there until the Sunnydale one was destroyed

I like that theory.

You reckon only one's (or can be) open at any given time? That's an interesting thought.
I was going to say that the Cleveslanders would have surely thought of something to protect themselves, against whatever would come out there. But, maybe it sort of makes sense that the Cleveland Hellmouth wasn't active, or at least not very active, while the Sunnydale one was, I mean, the Slayer was there, and even though there are loads of them, the number of demons and creeps is not infinite and they would want to focus on wherever being could be most profitable. And in Sunnydale, there's a) the Slayer (kill her and you're famous), ans b) because of a), there are so many demons there that the chances are higher no one's gonna notice you while you go about your wicked business.

Well if you think of it as a matter of balance. If there's good in the world, there must be evil too.

So if there can only be one Slayer(good) active at once, then surely there can only be one Hellmouth(evil) active at once too.

If we assume the hellmouth in Cleveland wasn't active while the one in Sunnydale was, why did Wishverse-Buffy go there instead of Sunnydale? Though Cordelia's wish of Buffy never having come to Sunnydale altered reality I doubt it was powerful enough to activate another hellmouth.

I think the Cleveland Hellmouth simply didn't need so much guarding as the one in Sunnydale because a) a lot of demons would come to Sunnydale because there's a Slayer to kill and b) in Season 8 Giles himself says to Faith that it's a "second-rate hellmouth".

Well, who's to say the slayer is the only kind of goody two-shoes in the verse? There is only one slayer, a man-made champion seemingly pretty separate from the Powers-that-Be. But what if the Powers have several Champions or other types of demon fighters picked out for at-risk areas? Angel was stationed in non-Hellmouthy LA. What if some similar agent of the Powers (or some other do-gooding organization) were stationed in Cleveland?

Apparently there are at least two hellmouths in the world, and almost certainly more. Greek mythology has several stories about people, the most famous being their champion Heracles, or Hercules, for one reason or other descending into Hades (and hopefully returning, but not always). Norse mythology has stories about Loki, the god of mischief and evil, being confined in hell, guarded by an army of trolls. When he finally escapes, it will herald the Ragnarok, or apocalypse. (Sound familiar?. I've always wondered if the First Evil was patterned at least slightly, on Loki) There's the Christian story in Revelations about the minions of hell being released, bringing about another version of apocalypse.

We could tie Whedon's in with those and other similar existing stories to form a system whereby the hellmouth, by whatever name, is an actual existing place with several possible points of access scattered throughout the world. If the forces of evil manage to break through at any of those spots, a champion, be it Slayer, Hunter, Guardian, Protector, or my personal favorite, Avenger, is dispatched to either reclose the opening, thus keeping evil at bay and mankind safe.

That might also explain which Potential is Called. Whoever happens to be the one closest to the existing, active, hellmouth is the one Called. How does that explain Kendra and Faith being so far away from the Sunnydale hellmouth when they were Called, you might ask? Maybe there is a hellmouth in or near Jamaica, and Faith being born in Boston is no assurance that she wasn't stationed in Cleveland.. The Powers, realizing that Buffy was still alive and well at the (we assume) most active hellmouth, simply saw to it that an alternate location was also protected. It might have even been the Powers who actually manipulated the circumstances surrounding Buffy's Slayer career with the ultimate intent being the formation of the Slayer army, the final great battle, and the at least temporary expulsion of the supernatural element from our universe.

All of which seems to have rambled away from the original question. Who fights, or more accurately, fought, the demons in and around Cleveland before the Slayer team under Wood's command came there? It's doubtful that evil had simply been given free hand to run rampant throughout the city. Probably groups of demon fighters like Gunn's crew in Los Angeles, and I wouldn't be surprised if the local police had some sort of demon SWAT team, as well as even another group like the Initiative. If we ever see more detail about the operation at the Cleveland hellmouth, we may find out for sure.

They mention activity in Celevland during season 3.. so it wasn't all -closed until further notice-

They probably just had demon hunters and such keeping an eye on things. I'm sure most demons focused on Sunnydale.. Since most of the big events were going on there... The Master.. The Mayor.. Glory.. So on...

I've always wondered this as well. I don't think it was inactive because of the mention in "The Wish" by Giles. Maybe all the books Giles had that foretold the apocalypses just happened to be Sunnydale Hellmouth related? They got lucky that they didn't have to make the commute to Cleveland every now and again when a prophecy proclaimed the apocalypse over there. It might have made for a crazy road trip episode. Unless they could somehow get those weapons past security at the airport.

The Cleveland Browns were really an undercover demon hunting unit. They kept the demon population down. That is why they are so bad, its because they don't have time to practice football during the week. You think Brady Quinn really broke his finger during a football game? No, he broke it while punching a vampire.

Ah! The answer was right in front of us the entire time. It's quite simple really. Now that you have outted them, the demons I'm sure will be doing the hunting now.
