I know this is a sensitive subject and I know some of you have some VERY strong thoughts/beliefs about it.

So, in light of everything you know, answer - is Climate Change something caused by man or a natural Earth cycle.

Should we try and stop it or is it pointless to fight nature?

I can firmly say that I don't know whether or not we are causing it. If I had to make an informed guess it'd probably be wrong anyway. From what Al Gore would tell you it's the end of the world as we know it, and I might even believe that, yes I watched his movie, and yes whoosh his big crane like gyro machine that went up in the air to show the impending doom of the planet Earth on a graph. Scary stuff. But it looks pretty nice outside right now, so idk. Feel free to make me believe one way or the other. : )

'Climate Change' - what are your thoughts?
I am all for it. I cant imagine living in a place with only one or two seasons. I lived for a spell in Florida and goodness, I missed Autumn and Winta.

Well 10,000 years ago (a mere blink of the eye to earth) Chicago was under 10 feet of ice. So unless cavemen were leaving their SUV's ideling in their driveway in front of their 3000 square foot caves burning wood to heat said cave then I would have to say that a large amount (95%) of climate change is natural.
Now some may read the above statement as me being an individual leaving a large carbon footprint. Actually I have updated my house with environmental friendly building material, use cfl bulbs in every light and turn off when rooms are empty, turn the thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter, plan my driving trips accordingly to save gas.
When I was a kid in the 70's (no age jokes please) the big scare was we were being plunged into another ice-age, google it if you don't believe me, now a mere 30 years later we are burning the planet. Speaking of google try this one Great Global Warming Swindle. Watch the video and see the other side of the Al Gore movie.

I'm definitely on your side mate
That was where my thoughts were going too Scobro. Of course there's climate changes. Always has been. Always will be.

I can't help thinking the term "climate change" is this BS term global warmists adapted to when they started noticing the world stopped warming after 1998. There has been no warming since 1998. Carbon Dioxide, the invisible, odorless, benign gas which exists for the most part naturally in the world, and whose presence is necessary for the survival of the life continues to rise, but the warming has stopped for the present at least. Nevertheless those who subscribe to the global warming doctrine continue to insist human released CO2 will destroy the planet.

As I understand it it's supposed to go something like this. Laboratory experiments show greenhouse gasses such as CO2 re-emit released energy, thus retaining some heat in the surrounding area. That much is actual confirmed science. Then you get out into the real world and everything becomes theoretical. There isn't actually enough energy re-emission from CO2 in the real world to cause crisis level warming. There's about 385 parts per million of CO2 in the atmospere, or about 4 one hundredths of 1% of all gases in the atmosphere. The portion of that which can be attributed to man is about 3% the way I heard it. The warmites tell you yes but CO2 has a lag time of about 100 years in the atmosphere, so the percentage ultimately becomes 30%. That's theory.

They then tell you this 30% creates positive feedbacks by warming the world and releasing moisture. Water is also a greenhouse gas, and by far the most abundant. It makes up about 95% percent of all greenhouse gases. From there the warming creates more positive feedbacks, and the world continues to get warmer and warmer, until one reaches a tipping point from which there is no return and a warming catastrophe is unstoppable. That also is theory, and there's tons wrong with it, starting with the the idea positive feedbacks can dominate. That's not the way observation tells us the natural world works. It's a cartoon explanation, and let me explain that term I just invented. You know in the cartoons where somebody makes a snowball then they roll it down the hill, and it gets bigger and bigger, gathering momentum, going faster and faster until it crashes down houses? That's positive feedback. It works that way in cartoons but try it in real life. It doesn't work. The reason it doesn't work is because negative feedbacks predominate the natural world. The things that slow the snowball down counteract the things that speed it up.

Another problem with the positive feedbacks cause catastrophic warming theory is you must ignore, or minimize all other possibilities which might have caused the warming we noticed coming out of the little ice age. These would include solar and ocean cycles. There's so much we don't know about how the climate works. This would include stuff like how clouds affect climate. Scientists (at least all the climate ones I'm aware of) believe when we understand clouds better, we'll understand climate better, and scientists like Roy Spencer (the guy who helped create the technology which allows satellites to monitor weather) tell us the current information coming back via satellite concerning clouds is not complimentary to the Anthropogenic Warming hypothesis.

So if what you're asking is how much warming is human caused my opinion would be not much, I'm not worried about a human caused global warming catastrophe, and Al Gore is a fraud, a hoaxer who represents about a billion dollars in investments which rely on the average guy swallowing the global warming (not climate change) flim flam.

As early back as I can remember climate has played a role as the boogey man....the coming Ice Age before talk of Global warming, acid rain (our oceans are all ready dead acoording to a dated Mr. Danza) The ozone hole, global warming, and now climate change.

I personally think it is a tool to manipulate people. We can not control the weather/ climate, but fear that we might adversely influence it has turned it into our modernday angry Zeus that we will go to great ends not to anger. Fill the temple coffers my friends!

The frightening thing is the degree in which it does that job. Mandates are being written that will affect the way we live our lives over an observed occurence that has had a circumsatnce assigned to it. Debate exists and it's not a scientific forgone conclusion that we are the cause. You won't find that discussed on the news, though...at least not that often. You don't want to question Zeus or you'll invite his wraith

The suspicious thing is, many of these green causes are driven by green dollars. Being green is big business. I don't mind it so much because there is a chance that Gore is right and I believe in being active, not reactive.

However some of the green endeavors...like mercury lightbulbs replacing the old fashion kind, makes me worry about how forward thinking and safe some of this activeness may be.

They say the planet is glowing up, is getting warmer, I don't feel it. For the rest, I hope I won't die of those changes, and my children either, and my grandchildren either. I somtimes think they might overdo about those hole climatthing, but hey I'm not a scientist.

Cow farts are killing the planet, not humans.. if we would stop being the carnivorous people we are, we would see a change in everything. Stop the destruction of sacred land for which we build grazing pastures. Our living condition and commuting methods do not need to change.. only our diets do.

They are carnivorous meat eaters and agents for the man! Of course they are going to try to advance their agenda.

You're joking, right? If not, 2 words for you. Buffalo herds.
Of course the climate is changing. That's what planets do; they change. If they didn't, we couldn't have evolved (or survive on this planet after being created, however you want to look at it) because the planet would still be a mess of volcanoes or covered by ice.

That being said, I think people vastly overestimate the damage we tiny minuscule little virus-y people can do to a whole big planet. When people say, "We're destroying the planet!" what they really mean is, "We're destroying our comfortable happy way of life!" Or, "Give me money so you feel less scared/guilty about destroying the planet!" We can't destroy this planet. We might be able to damage it, but it will regenerate. That's also what planets do. The worst we can do is wipe out most--not all, but most--life on Earth, including ourselves.

Eventually, the climate will shift. The world will either get really REALLY hot or really REALLY cold. The question isn't what can we do to stop it (not a damn thing), but can we survive it?

Here's a graph of CO2 and temperatures over geologic time. Check out where we are right now. Think about that.

Either I'm reading it wrong or that thing says we should be at the start of an ice age?
Don't believe anything that N4H is saying, his information is paid for by the people in the Bush Administration.

We are everyday bringing closer the doom of this planet and you're all too stupid to realise that.

You would rather ignore the facts and not change your life style then see what is really happening.

For shame!!!

OK, again, you're joking, right? 🙂 I think you're joking.

You and me both know though, there are wing nuts who actually talk like that. If by some off-chance you're not joking, post some these facts you say you've got. I'll give you something to really laugh about.

He just doesnt care about his children or his childrens children. He would rather take all he can get right now! He's like Anya playing Life wanting to trade his kids off for money and riches. He's so far gone he even thinks we are joking about it!

My God Scobro, I was wrong. You actually are serious. You actually do believe cow farts, are destroying the planet. Here's something to think about. (You know global warming theory is based on the idea man creates carbon dioxide (CO2) in manufacturing, and transportation right?).

Not only is carbon dioxide's total greenhouse effect puny, mankind's contribution to it is minuscule. The overwhelming majority (97%) of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere comes from nature, not from man. Volcanoes, swamps, rice paddies, fallen leaves, and even insects and bacteria produce carbon dioxide, as well as methane. According to the journal Science (Nov. 5, 1982), termites alone emit ten times more carbon dioxide than all the factories and automobiles in the world.

Liberty - Global Warming, Global Myth

And here's another one people don't seem to know, and it's getting kind of tiring to always have to bring it up. CO2 is not pollution. It's invisible. All those global warming commercials you see with smoke billowing out of smokestacks are bogus. You can't see CO2. CO2 is beneficial. It helps plants grow. Commercial growers pump 3 times the normal level of CO2 into their greenhouses to get big, fat tomatoes.

So, it's all the tomatoes fault? DOWN WITH TOMATOES! ;P
All those global warming commercials you see with smoke billowing out of smokestacks are bogus.

Yeah, those tend to be nuclear power plants and that "billowing smoke" tends to be . . . water vapor. Steam. Nothing scarier than that. Dratted scare mongers.

Blondie Bear agrees: Either I'm reading it wrong or that thing says we should be at the start of an ice age?

Yeah, that graph is kind of deceptive, because of the vast periods of time it deals with.

However...

Quaternary glaciation, also known as the Pleistocene glaciation, the current ice age or simply the ice age, refers to the period of the last few million years (2.58 Ma to present) in which permanent ice sheets were established in Antarctica and perhaps Greenland, and fluctuating ice sheets have occurred elsewhere (for example, the Laurentide ice sheet).

Quaternary glaciation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The last ice age part we the general public think of as an ice age occurred about 15,000 years ago. There was something called the little ice age about 600 years ago. It's what we've been coming out of with this gradual warming. We're currently in what they call an interglacial period.

There are scientists however, who believe we are overdue for an ice age, and by that they mean the kind of thing we saw 600, or even the larger event 15,000 years ago. They believe recent lack of sunspots indicates some sort of major cooling event is coming soon.

My God Scobro, I was wrong. You actually are serious. You actually do believe cow farts, are destroying the planet.

Not just cow farts.. humans too. You seen Dune? I see a future similar to that although the tube will go from sphincter to nose so we can recycle our gaseous emmissions

OK, so now I am confused. You are joking right? It's confusing, because there actually are people who talk like that, and they're serious.
Didn't they (fear mongers) claim the same about the boogey man climate/winter in the 70's ? That back then we were heading toward another ice age? I'm pretty sure it was even a cover story on Time magazine...

I remember looking at photos of a winter in the 70's (taken when I was a baby) and it looked awfull. The criteria for panick was certainly there, with peoples experiences backing headlines, no wonder they thought we were goin to freeze.

(Also there was a very bad snowstorm for the United States midwest in the early to mid spring in that decade. Weather can be just weird....but weird is realitive and seldom unique. in other words...its done this before. Tornadoes in January! Its the end of the world....what it did the same thing 100 years ago?!?))

It sometimes seems like people look for things to worry about. Whats really worrysome is when they start programs to combat the worry! Some of the programs have caused more harm than good....for example, 'fixing' eroding coastlines with sand/rock not native to the area and messing with turtles by hampering their desire to crawl far enough across the beach.

Doing something is only better than doing nothing, if the something is something done correctly....or something like that.

BTW, great reads, Nerd4Hire.
