CNN NEWS....Aircraft crashes in New York.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick high-rise residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.

The building is located near Rockefeller Center and is very close to the Hudson River. A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson told CNN that it had not been tracking the plane.

There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows on the 10th story. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a "general aviation" aircraft had hit the building.

Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

Norad fighter planes have been sent to patrol several US cities as a precaution even though they believe this is an accident......

They say right now it was just an accident with a small plane, but if I was New York I wouldn't want small planes flying around downtown in this political climate. It hit a condo complex. Hopefully they were all at work, but they're saying there was one fatality.

Apparently small aircraft are lax in that they are not required to file flight plans, which would account for this craft not being tracked. Small craft are allowed to fly through that river's area all the time, as I understand.

N4H, I don't live in Manhattan, so I am pretty far from there. I live in one of the City's outer boroughs known as Queens.

It was confirmed minutes ago that the pilot in fact WAS Yankees relief pitcher Corey Lidle.

At first they were saying it was a helicopter. It was at 72nd and York which really isn't that near to Rockefeller Center. I think they said it crashed into the 39th/40th floor and the apartment were on fire and spreading up.

Ok, I am not mocking this tragedy but want to see a bizarre coincidence.
This took place on 10/11/6 which if you rotate it 90 degrees comes out as 9/11/01.

I was surprised that they let planes that arn't commercial aircraft fly over New York after Sep 11th.

Now people will think that maybe I think there was some Al-Qaeda plot to take over the NY Yankees in a diabolical plot to rule the world.😉

I heard eyewitness reports that said the plane was flying erradically, still don't know why though.

Did anyone else see fighter jets flying around in their city? We had tons of them - dispatched by the Canadian Military, flying overhead for AGES.
