Collars and bells

In season 2 Xander says:

XANDER: That's it, I'm puttin' a collar with a little bell on that guy.

about Angel

then in season 6 buffy says:

BUFFY: Bell. Neck. Look into it.

to Spike

I get why it was said to Angel, but shouldn't Buffy have been able to sense Spike behind her?

In the movie version, Buffy could actually sense the presence of vampires (she compared it to premenstrual cramps) but I don't think that that sort of power was ever mentioned in the TV series, allowing the big revelation several episodes into Season 1 to work. Of course, it wasn't decided that Angel actually would be a vampire until that point, so maybe it was just a lucky coincidence.

She can sense vamps in the series too--'vamp tinglies'. The inconsistencies of this spidey-sense are just some small plot holes.

Exactly. It's how Buffy can sense Angel a little in Pangs, even though she's not completely certain of it. It's not really something she ever properly utilized though, is it?

I remember her just casually saying "That's a vamp" while at The Bronze a couple of times. I guess she has some kind of spider-sense for vampires.

No, we never saw her really "honing" as Giles said in "Welcome to the Hellmouth". I think this was a skill they should have expanded upon in the show as one of her Slayer traits.

In "Welcome To The Hellmouth," Buffy recognized a vampire because his clothes were so out of fashion. It reminded me of a conversation between Merrick and Buffy in the movie.

Buffy--You don't have to worry about me, I've got something that none of those other girls had.

Merrick--And what would that be, pray tell?

B--My keen fashion sense.

M (rolling his eyes)--Vampires of the world, beware.

I guess that's one of the few things that actually managed to carry over to the show.
