A college basketball bribery scandal leads to arrests of 10 people — including an Adidas executive

The FBI arrested 10 people on charges of fraud and corruption in men's college basketball on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that assistant coaches at Arizona, Auburn, USC and Oklahoma State had been arrested along with managers, financial advisers, and representatives of the international sportswear company Adidas.

Jim Gatto, the director of global sports marketing for basketball at Adidas, was among the defendants. Gatto is accused of conspiring with coaches to pay high-school athletes to play at universities sponsored by Adidas (referred to as "Company 1" in the case).

The investigation, which had been in progress since 2015, was led by the FBI and the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. Three separate complaints have been filed.

Gatto and four other defendants have been charged with "making and concealing bribe payments" to high-school student athletes and/or their families.


Ah ha!! Notice how a USC coach was involved in this, but no one from UCLA was. This shouldn't come as a surprise, since everyone knows that UCLA RULES!

USC = The University of Spoiled Children. They suck! Bruins rule!!

The USC listed is South Carolina. But Southern California sucks. :)

There are too much money in American college sports. Corruption seems inevitable. Who are the victims here? Gamblers?
 
Don't get me started on this! 😵 Most of this would be solved by just paying the players. 🙄 There's too much money in sports in general. I'm from northeast Ohio, and trust me their are some shady things that happen at the high school level here. 😱
 
Of course nothing will happen to UNC because they're too important for college basketball.

The punishments are a joke. Obviously Rick Pitino being fired is a big deal but between this and the hooker thing, this was the breaking point. I expect he will have another job within a year like nothing ever happened.

The only way these schools, coaches, and whoever will actually be punished is by the government. The NCAA will not hand down appropriate punishment to schools that are important for college basketball, it's really as simple as that. UNC, Uconn, Kentucky, they're all cheaters. But they'll never get more than a slap on the wrist. What's that, you get caught with a recruiting violation? Ok, just withdraw from tournament consideration for a year and the NCAA will forgive and forget. But if a school like St. John's got busted with the same charges? They're gonna get the SMU treatment because they aren't important to the sport and making money for the NCAA.

If a school gets caught paying players serious money or other similar acts -- ANY school, including Kentucky, not just the bottom-100 schools condemned to the NIT and sub .500 records every year -- the entire coaching staff should be fired and the program should be shut down for 5 years. It's the only way you can make sure that everyone stops doing this once and for all. I am 100% for harsh, Stalinist punishment with this sort of thing. Seeing all these schools get by with blatant cheating and win every year because of it makes my blood boil.

These schools didn’t even get caught by the NCAA. The NCAA didn’t have a clue about this, the only reason they got caught is because the FBI flags all transactions over 10k and noticed an odd pattern so they looked into it. Since is bribery and not taxed the government hates it, since they aren’t getting any of the money being moved around they are enforcing laws. And also the student athletes age all minors or around minors they worry about people being taken advantage of. I’m sure most of not all will plead down.

It might be embarrassing for the NCAA to try and hand out serious punishments for this since they didn’t even catch this. Someone else broke the news to them. I bet the pentalies will be small in hopes it blows over.
 
This brings up a question - if the students don't get paid to play, where is the NBA going to get future talent? The most promising athletes need to go through the coaching and school basketball system in order to be trained and ready for the NBA when they graduate. I have no problem with sports scholarships other than an obvious one - universities should be about academic training, not sports. But without a full ride for a lot of promising sports candidates, many of them will never get to the major leagues and even if they try out as walk-in candidates for a team, they will not have had the training and experience college sports allows.

I say pay them and stop trying to pretend amateur sports means no money changes hands.
 
I highly doubt getting paid to play college ball could ever really compete with NBA salaries. Even the bench warmers are making around 650k a season.

I'm not saying they shouldn't get a full ride - and they do now. That's the point. They get the college education, plus training for the pros, in exchange for playing. If they think they're good enough to be paid go get drafted.

I think most of it comes in the form of "gifts" and whatnot, like how Pete Carroll set up Reggie Bush's parents in a house in LA. I don't really blame the kids though. Reggie Bush came from nothing and was inserted into a life of glitz and glamour in Hollywood with free "gifts" being dangled in front of his face. Of course I'd take them.
 
I wish we could reform college and athletics. The schools are not corporations and they shouldn't be paying athletes. Academia has to be separated from that.

In Europe, if you wish to play while in college you would play for pay on the dime of a football club. Prospects are funnelled into those club systems. In Europe, the university and athletics are seperated. I'm not against a young person getting paid for being an athlete, but our schools shouldn't be doing that. They are not supposed to be capitalist market institutions.
