College For Buffy

Why was it necessary for Buffy to remain in Sunnydale for college? Why couldn't she attend Northwestern University?

There was really no reason for her to stay in Sunnydale . . . aside from defeating the Mayor. After all, demons - along with vampires - exist all over the world. Not every Slayer was required to live in Sunnydale. And Buffy became a Slayer, while living in Los Angeles. So what was the big deal with her being forced to attend UC Sunnydale?
 
I thought it was to do with the Hellmouth, there's demons all over the world but it seemed to be more focused there due to the Hellmouth..
 
I don't think she was forced, I just think she knew where she was needed the most...over the hellmouth. And she knew it would be irresponsible of her to leave. They had mentioned that demonic activity had increased over the years...it was probably just getting worse and worse and for her to leave would be...well...bad. 😀
 
A lot of things would have changed probably if she went away.

The initiative might not have defeated Adam.
Glory may have been able to find the key.
Trio takes over Sunnydale (hehe).
Army of Ubervamps get out of the hellmouth cuz Buffy's not there to find the scythe, make new slayers and stop them.
 
I think she should have traveled for a while atleast, like a few months to Cleveland and other vampire hotspots across the country.

About Northwestern, I just wanna know how she got in. I mean sure she had a great SAT score, 1440 I believe, but that wouldn't overshadow her GPA (which was like 2.9 in I Robot You Jane, I think) and all the fighting and detention stuff that would have been on her transcript.

Sunnydale would have been really bad without her, as seen in the Wish, but I think the Council could have given her her own private jet to fly around and fight the good fight, because I mean they gotta have like billions at their disposal.

I have often wondered how she got in.
I think she just felt she was needed the most there...if she left she would be leaving the hellmouth behind her...and as much as she would have probably love to have left it all behind...she felt it was her responsibility.

I agree with her feelings that she needed to be there, but also since The Hellmouth became more active, and more badass demons started to draw to it.

What did the Hellmouth have to do with anything? Other Slayers have been active in communities that did not have a Hellmouth. There were plenty of vampires and demons that resided in communities that didn't have a Hellmouth.


I pretty much agree with everybody on this one. Buffy knew she was needed, and she knew it would have been irresponsible of her to leave this Hellmouth.

Irresponsible? What does irresponsibility have to do with her going to college in another location? Aren't there vampires and demons all over the world? I'm sure that she would have found plenty of them at Northwestern University.

Again I think it had to do with the recent increase in activity over the Sunnydale hellmouth..they mention it on a few occasions.

But Sunnydale wasn't the only community with a Hellmouth. There was one in Cleveland. And why does Buffy have to deal with the Hellmouth? Because she's the Slayer? Why do people assume that because she has Slayer powers, she HAS to assume the duties of one?

She doesn't. Faith didn't. Buffy felt a responsibility to fullfill her duties/calling as Slayer. Hence her decision to remain in Sunnydale after High School.
 
I completely agree with Jenny on that one...Buffy in no way had to stay in Sunnydale...or ever assume the responsibilities of the Slayer...she CHOOSE to do that...because she felt it weas the right thing to do.

Yeah, Buffy choose to stay in Sunnydale to help keep the demons from taking over. And it was the Hellmouth afterall.

originalslayer: Buffy stopped listening to the council so why would they help her travel around? Unless it was some world-apocalyse thing happening elsewhere.

LadyLavinia: The other slayers went sent around the world to fight the evils there, like how Kendra was sent to Sunnydale twice because of the rise of demon power (errr, something like that).

Buffy felt a responsibility to fullfill her duties/calling as Slayer.

Buffy felt the responsibility, because she was bullied into it - first by Merrick, and later Giles. They dumped a guilt trip on her that very few adolescents would be able to resist. No wonder she still disliked being a Slayer, by Season 7's "Touched".

Poor Buffy. She can be selfish on a minor level. But when it comes to making major choices that affect her life, she has always allowed others to force her into living up to their expectations.

That is the cross that the Slayer is forced to bear. I certainly don't think she was bullied into anything. She most certainly didn't let the council bully her around. And she could have revolted against her Watcher had she so chosen...just look at Faith. But Buffy had too much character and too good a sense of Duty...she stepped up to her calling as The Slayer, and for that I respect her character completely.

I don't respect her. I don't respect Buffy for allowing Merrick and Giles to force her to follow the dictates of the Shadowmen, who started the Slayer line, and the Watchers' Council, who forced teenaged girls and young women to fight their battles against demons for them.

Buffy had a choice. There was no law that stated that just because she had inherited Slayer powers, she automatically had to assume Slayer duties. In my mind, that is B***s***. If Buffy really hated the idea of being a Slayer, she should have simply stopped, and continue with her own life. She allowed the magic of the Shadowmen and the Watcher's Council bullying to control her life. And for that I do not have much respect for her. Now, what she does with her life now that she's older and there are more Slayers willing to take up the duties of fighting demons, is up to her.
 
Well I think buffy stays in Sunnydale because she felt she was needed there,and also I think she stays there because her friends were there

Wait...maybe I'm just completely confused here, but are you saying you would respect her if she left her calling behind? just gave up on it and never looked back? Left innocents to die and suffer at the hands of something she can help stop? Something she knows about, but doesn't care to do anything about? She didn't just tak ethe Slayer duties because she was told to, she did it because she knew what was out there. and she choose to help fight the good fight. I respect her, because she COULD have just walked away if she wanted to, and yet...she didn't.

LadyLavina, you are the most cynical person I've ever heard of. Buffy could have stopped at any time. But you know why she keeps on fighting? Because she's a hero. Not because of her powers, but because of how she uses them. She has never let the Shadowmen bully her. If that were true, she would have accepted the power they offered her at the risk of losing her humanity. The Watcher's Council didn't think the Slayer should have friends or any kind of life beyond the fight. Buffy's always gone against that. She's always fought evil her own way. You'd rather have her give up her duty and let the world get destroyed? I can see the description for that show: "One girl in all the world is chosen to fight the forces of darkness, but decides to go to the mall instead."

If you can't respect this, than you have no idea what this show was about and I can't figure out why you even watched it in the first place. If you don't understand why she kept fighting, than go watch something else and leave the super-hero shows to us.
