so im a student in college, and you know you're able to create a club or organization of your own with some friends and a $10 fee to start it up. so some friends of mine and i loved buffy and the god that he is, joss whedon, so much that we decided to create a new club. we called it the Joss Whedon Fan Club. it's been up a year now (since we started school obviously), but this year we thought about making it MORE active. last year we would just get together at weekly meetings to discuss the shows-- buffy, angel, firefly, serenity-- watch episodes, and when they happened, attend the buffy singalongs at our alamo drafthouses here in town. a bunch of us even went to the awesome 10 year buffy anniversary where they did a special buffy marathon for like 10 hrs (think the singalong + 1 episode from every season). it was a blast!
anyways, this year, we were thinking of going BIG! big as in... we want to hold a student-run convention. like it'll be buffy, angel, firefly... we'll hopefully have special guests there... games, contests, panal discussions... you're typical convention... but run by our club. we're not sure whether it'll be spring next year, or if we'll hold off another year and just spend this year raising money to hold the convention. but we do have ALOT of work to do for that.
my question for y'all is: can anybody give me some good suggestions for raising money for this?? so far we've come up with bake sale & car wash. but those don't really seem to bring in the big bucks. we're also planning on launching a website to sell tshirts (and maybe other peraphenalia) with "whedonverse"-related designes on them, and to promote the convention when we have it. we're working on getting some sponsors right now, renting out the space to have it in (because you have to do that WAY in advanced to make sure you get it when you need it).
but anyways, that's what i need y'all's help with at the moment-- ideas for raising money. but also, i just want to throw this out there... if, and when, this all comes together, i think it would be AWESOME for members of the buffy-boards near the area to come to this! i've never been to any kind of convention before, let alone do i know how to help organize & run one (especially of this magnitude), and having any of y'all come to it to support it and have fun at it would be so cool.
