Come join the I hate Kennedy club

You have two characters like Angel & Spike who on paper sound exactly alike, but were written, acted, and directed completely differently.
I don't know that I agree with that assessment at all. I think that Spike and Angel are completely different on paper
I'm pretty sure James Marsters, David Boreanaz, and Joss Whedon have all made that same statement, so I'm comfortable sticking by it 😛
I just don't see it with Angel and Spike at all so please explain to me the similarities you see on paper between the two.
Both Vampires with a soul who wasted their first life, spend an eternity traveling around the world with a vampire lover causing torment and havoc, only to meet a slayer fall in love and now fight for good.

Without their personalities their pretty much the same person.
Personalities are what make the person them not the circumstances. So while I will agree that they have similar circumstances on paper that doesn't make them similar people on paper which is what I was referring to and assumed that's what the debate was about so that is my mistake for assuming.
Ah, no worries, "on paper" means a general breakdown of the concrete facts, regardless of the subtleties of the reality.

I like Kennedy. First of all, she was the one who got Willow to think past Tara. Secondly, distinct from all the whiny little potentials, she was the one who actually was up for a fight. I don't see how the rest of them could have made good slayers (or good anything else). Vi and Amanda were OK but really, the rest of them are not slayer material.

Oh, you know what? There's one part where I liked her for a second. After the Slayers all got their powers and she beat up the uber vamp n she was like "I could get used to this." Lol

I can't help but think that if she was introduced maybe in season 5 or 6 as a potential slayer, it would have made for a great storyline and people would have liked her better.

I think in s7 we have too many underdeveloped potentials and it makes Kennedy seem like another one of those useless character that shouldn't even be there. But I think her storyline would have been good had it extended over a few seasons. I mean, would it not have be really cool to see the story of a slayer before she actually became a slayer. That's one thing we never truly go to see, even in s7 because everything was so rushed.

Completely agree, Kennedy got thrown in with the other potentials, but the writers were trying to make her part of the group too fast, so it was a mismatch of background character and new recurring character.

Had they introduced her earlier it would have been a lot better, seeing her develop over time having her be cocky but then get beaten down a bit and properly realise she's not a slayer yet.

I also think if the potentials were a longer story it would have been interesting to see Buffy faced with her own mortality and having to deal with someone who was ready for her to die to take over and be the Slayer. I've always thought one of the biggest missed opportunities in season 7 was not exploring the potentials and their relationship with the slayer, in place of certain other characters.

It would need to be Faiths death to activate a new slayer. Buffy's death in season 1 already activated Kendra and then Kendras death went and activated Faith.

Well I guess that depends what theory on what messed up the slayer line you subscribe to. The First seemed to think Buffys death activated the next slayer, and there's a line in the shooting script that was cut from the show that says both Buffy and Faith have to die for the next one to be activated 🙂 - (one of mt favorite BtVS topics of discussion is the slayer line, which is probably why I like the potentials.)

Wouldn't that mean that both Buffy and Kendra would have needed to die before Faith was activated? Meaning Buffy needed to die a 2nd time while Kendra was a slayer.

No, not before Buffy died in 'The Gift'. Before 'The Gift', the line ran normally - or as normal as you can get when the Slayer who died is actually still alive.

The theory - well, actually, there are many - goes that, when Willow resurrected Buffy, she some how reinserted Buffy into the Slayer line, meaning that Buffy's death would activate a new Slayer. This was the 'problem' in the Slayer line that Beljoxa's Eye said The First exploited.

Now, whether that means there are now - or were - two Slayer lines (one that runs/ran through Buffy, one that runs/ran through Faith) meaning that there will always be two Slayers, or Buffy has taken Faith's place in the line, making FAITH the 'extra' Slayer, rather than Buffy, because Willow pulled the power out of Faith, or that BOTH Slayers deaths will activate a new Slayer, and THEN the other one becomes the 'extra'.

There's also a theory that Buffy's death in 'The Gift' DID activate a new Slayer, we just didn't see her until S7 - Amanda. There was a lot of speculation at the time of S7 that Amanda had WAY more skill and ability than the other Potentials, considering she'd never been trained. This theory would mean that the glitch that The First exploited was actually Buffy's resurrection, rather than her reinsertion into the Slayer line.

Not really sure which theory I buy into - two Slayer lines, probably. I don't like the idea that Willow pulled something away from Faith to give to Buffy, however unintentionally.

Ah, I see, very interested. I have never heard any of those theories or read any discussions involving slayer lines so I find it quite interesting.

I think it's the best BtVS discussion! Lots of little pieces of evidence!
