Comforting Smells

My favorite place, my basement, smells really nice. I light a bazillion candles at once, and the room smells amazing for weeks afterwards. The smell always calms me down. Do you guys have any smells like that?

Vanilla candles.

They remind me of living at home with my mom. Good days.

It sounds weird coming from an atheist, but I love the scent of church incense. This random guy would spread the incense through the cathedral on special events and it would always choke me so I couldn't sing very well. But at the same time it was calming to be around it.

I also love the scent of lilies. My grandma always used to buy them for my mum and put them by the fireplace, where the dog would walk by and smell them every day without fail. Just so cute, I'm reminded of it everytime I smell lilies. 🙂

great thread! lots of smells are very comforting to me. the smell of people I love... the smell of bread baking... the smell when it rains. When I was little I had a blanket I brought everywhere with me and I would just hold it to my nose and smell it.

I forgot one. The smell of bonfire smoke mixed with cow dung and various other substances. In other words the smell of Glastonbury- my happy place. 😀

There's a particular smell of burning wood which makes me think of Eastern Europe and trips to places like Prague in January, all murky and atmospheric.

Otherwise, warm croissants- I walked past the bakery at around 7 this morning on the way to catch the bus and the smell was beautiful. Pity too much bread gives me indigestion.

The smell of the seaside. Nothing better than that; going down to the seafront after months of being stuck in the Midlands and taking a deep lungful of sea air. Love it.

I even have a strange affection for the not-so-pleasant smell of a seaweedy beach!

The scent of a REAL Christmas tree. The scent you can smell when the Spring is almost there. Some old books scent(yes I'm like Giles HAHAHA). 😛

My Nana's house. It's what my childhood smells like.

Guinness Christmas Cake. My mother makes them every year and they just smell like pure happiness and nostalgia to me.

Grease and sweat. My daddy was a mechanic and he died 2 years ago. Every time I smell that, it reminds me of him.

Hurray for incense! I burn 2-3 sticks a day at home and at the office. My favorite is aloeswood, which can cost up to $5 a stick!!! But I found some for 5 cents a stick. 🙂


BTW, I refuse to ever smell $5 a stick incense. I'm afraid I'll love it. 😛
