Im just watching Bargaining, and its the bit where the demons crash the spell to bring back Buffy.

I was just wondering, do you think the reason Buffy "came back wrong" as Spike puts it, was because Willow couldnt finish the spell? Or just the fact that she was brought back at all? Or something else.

My theory - It has something to do with the demon energy we saw in Get It Done used to create the First Slayer, and referred to by the Shadowmen as "your truest power".

When Willow brought back Buffy, she recreated her magically from the ground up. Did the demon energy connection of slayers somehow get jammed or something, as opposed to what might happen with a normal slayer? Possibly Willow created the equivalent of a First Slayer, creating a second slayer line. This might also explain Beljoxa's eye's explanation of a "disruption in the slayer line" in Season 7.

Might have known you'd come up with something that makes complete sense. You think too much 😛

I don't think that it had anything to do with the jar being broken
But I do recall Tara explaining that to Buffy in season 6

Yeah I agree with N4H I always thought it had to do with Willow creating a second slayer line, by bring buffy back

i think maybe its more than that.
they kept saying that it was a intense type of spell.
so it could be a number of things, the jar, just the fact that she came back from a different world (thats just not natural).

Well Spike and Giles, two people who were shut out of the resurrection proceedings, were both angry about the affair afterwards. Interesting, because it's a natural reaction one would have at being excluded from something that was so important to him/her BUT they also had legitimate cause for being concerned that something unnatural and wrong had been done. Spike's line in "Afterlife": "That's the thing about magic. There's always consequences." (Gets on his bike) "Always!"

The business felt kind of horrifying to me the first time around. I think we were meant to believe there was something dark and untoward in what the four had done. It didn't surprise me then that it later turned out that Buffy did not come back exactly as she was before.

See i don't think the coming back wrong has anything to do with the Slayer, i think its the human, the body thats wrong.
See, to me, the evidence is in the fact Spike can hit her.
Spikes chip stops him from assaulting any human, including the Slayer, so if the Slayer was 'damaged' in the return from Bargaining, the Human side of Buffy would still stop him from attacking.

Now the Slayer-line, well again what i kinda have come to believe is that Buffy's soul was 'reborn' in Buffy to bring her back, the body accepted that. Thus, IF certain Potentials are always fated/destined to be Slayers, then Buffy being 'reborn' would possibly crash back into that fate/destiny, but because she has already lived and died and lost the line, said line is confused by this woman of age coming back into it while Faith is still active.

obviously there are some flaws/errors that need to be worked out, but since i have only just really begun to piece it together, its not bad...is it?

I agree with N4H - the slayer was re-created with the original slayer-power (the way the Shadowmen had) without all of the dilution that had occurred by the power being passed down from generation to generation.

I have to nod in agreement here. It's only worth arguing the matter so far, but here's one more post.

There may have particular issues arising from the fact that Willow and Co. were resurrecting a special entity, a vampire slayer.

However, the fact that the Spike couldn't hurt her (without hurting himself) before she died is not related to her being a slayer, but to her HUMANNESS. The chip in his head worked for all living humans, not just Buffy. The fact that it no longer works in the case of Buffy after she comes back was, as I saw it, a result of the fact that a perfectly human life such as what Buffy had before is not something so easy given, not even by a witch as talented as Willow. She was almost but not quite able to do it.

The mystical ripples of resurrecting a vampire slayer were profound of course, but I still feel they are separate from the "coming back wrong" side of the matter.

OBVIOUSLY i agree:)
So it was more of an imbalence bet the demon power in the slayer and her humaness then..?
I have to nod in agreement with DDM and watcher1006 though.

I'm also in agreement with N4H, that they re-imbued her with the demon/Slayer mojo. Also because it was slightly evil what the Shadowmen did, and it seemed that the ritual was a bunch of evil stuff as well.
