I have watched a few episodes with commentary on, but now I am getting more serious about it. Last night I watched the commentary for the episode Wild At Heart with Joss Whedon, Marty Noxin and Seth Green. It was really really really good and funny, but holy cow... not that I mind... but the language they use! I didn't know that you could use the word S*** of F*** on a Fox DVD even on commentary. There were also some colorfully dirty sexual remarks on the commentary. Has anyone else listened to this commentary? Has anyone listened to other commentaries that said things that shocked you?
 
Wah! My box set doesn't have that commentary! That's not fair! 🙁 Is there a difference between the American and British box sets? I'd really like to know what other commentaries I'm missing...

I have the American version of the Chosen Collection I don't know if that makes a difference, do you have the British equivalent of the Chosen Collection?
 
Yeah, the region 2 box set is a bit crap. That's why I bought the Chosen Collection, which is only available in the US.
 
I have the British versions as far as I know and they have all the commentaries on them...
 
I bought the DVDs as they came out in the US and I have the commentaries. There aren't many of them though. I always thought the special features were fairly weak on Buffy DVDs. The later seasons are a little better though.
 
I have listened to all commentaries of buffy and angel in my last view through them. Yeah, they have a bunch of dirty mouths lol but i guess when you think about how people can release "director's cut" versions of horror movies with far more gore, sex, and language on dvd, i guess its the same sort of thing. What wouldn't be allowed on prime time t.v. is ok in a commentary because maybe they figure people have more control over what they watch, and if they let children watch this that or the other thing on dvd, as opposed to it being on t.v. where anyone can turn it on and see it.
 
Wow I honestly JUST watched that ep with the commentary...creepy.
Yea theyre potty mouthed (especially Marti! :0) but I like it, lol. Its neat seeing how they all joke around each in real life, theyre all so hilarious. Fave moment, "Stop touching me...No, seriously Joss, STOP touching me!"
 
Eh, they do warn that the commentary and special features are unrated. I've never heard anything extremely shocking in them, and I think I've watched them all with commentary. Maybe I'm just either jaded or unobservent....I'm not sure which.

I do like them though, they give lots of insight! I wish there were more....
 
I spent a fortune on the dvd sets when they where first out and that commentarys not on it damn 🙁 Anyhow my favourite commentary was probably the body or hush i cant get enough of listening to joss hes an interesting funny man

I really don't get why they would put different extra material on different releases (or is it just LESS on the British release?). How does that make sense? I doubt they expect people to go out and buy BOTH the American and British releases, 'cause that's just crazy.
It's a shame 'cause I really enjoy commentaries. They can be quite interesting, and the one you described sounds particularly fun. :biggrin: The most entertaining ones are usually the ones where they're just having a bit of a laugh instead of going on and on about a particular set piece or whatever. 🙂

Thats a great resource for the differences.

The US version (chosen is meaningless to the spec of the seasons, thats only an extra's disk which is quite good btw) has the extra commentary for S4. UK is also missing quite a few other things but these are all available on youtube. One reason i will always prefer the UK release is its higher resolution (not just the widescreen which is obviously much higher resolution but the S1-3 SD as well).

It also includes the 'previously on Buffy' part of the epsiode which in S5's 'The Gift' becomes a pivotal role in building the tension. The US versions have this as an extra in the S7 boxset but its not the same without it being part of the episode.

Thanks, that's very interesting. Now I'm gonna have to try and hunt down all those "interview with Joss Whedon on..." bits. :tongue2: I still don't get why they would leave those and the Wild at Heart commentary out of the UK release though. Seems an odd thing to do. ::huh1::
 
Theres also an error in the US versions S7 End of Days. The editor removed the 'Previously on.." bits (as per normal for the US versions) but accidentally removed the entire first scene from the show.

Is that the case with the Chosen Collection? If so, what happens in that scene so I can be sure? If that is the case, I don't trust any screen caps websites.
 
Yes it is the case with all US collections... The truth is not much. Its just the scene (I believe, as i havn't actually seen the US version of S7) of the girls getting exploded'ed (what a word) right before the cut to buffy pulling the axe. I think its given in more detail on the Wiki page but you can look that up yourself.


Sorry to go so rampantly opposite to the OP discussion. As for commentaries, ive listened to them all. I most enjoy when you get a lot of the cast in and they start having a laugh. I think my favourite was S7's 'Conversations with Dead People' where it has Lenk explaining how he met the vamp that Buffy was fighting all that night (Holden Webster/Knox played by Jonathan Woodward). He met the guy at a convention and Lenk remarked 'wow I really liked you in Conversations' and he replied..." Great its always nice to meet a fan"...thus showing he never even watched the show. It was funny in the commentary watching Lenk, and Strong just laughing and taking the piss out of this guy as well as themselves.
 
I love the commentaries, Joss' are by far the best like his episodes but just behind is Douglas Petrie (So funny!), Jane Espenson and Marti Noxon. Also maybe i'm lame but any commentary with the actors in it is awesome, especially Wild at Heart because Seth Green is hilarious. There are some episodes that they don't have commentary on that I really wish they did, but c'est la vie I guess.

I also love all the inside jokes you get. Like every commentary that isn't by Joss talks about how a lot of the scenes are re-written by him. And almost everyone talks about how if someone comments on a line from their episode it's almost always Joss. That's part of why I respect a couple of Jane Espenson's lines so much like "Mother's milk is red today" and "Every night I save you." If I didn't know any better I would have thought gut punchers like that were Joss'
