personally I<3 Giles but because buffy goes with the stupid "isolationist slayer crap" everyone else follows suit. He does occasionally get hugs in the body, when buffy came back from the grave, but they can go through apocolypses and there isn't so much as an "I'm glad you lived hug!" Reply if you would ggive Giles a hug.:grouphug:

Well, in early seasons he was already worryingly lax with boundaries, so I'd understand if he scared everyone off. I mean, just look how close he gets to Buffy in WttH! If my school librarian ever got that close....

Most people i know dont hug. Over in this neck of the woods male hugging isnt really the done thing, unless you want slapped(then hug away)
Plus its kinda just for girls and pussies.

i think if everyone in the gang is having a hugfest, giles definitely deserves to be included. but if its not a time where everybody's giving the big group hugs and whatnot, and its just that they happened to survive some big danger (which they do a lot), then i agree with Five by Five about the boundaries thing.

EDIT:

I didnt really notice Giles pushing any boundries in WttH

im not sure necessarily that he pushed boundaries in wtth, just that if they were hugging all the time, that would've been pushing boundaries.

I didnt really notice Giles pushing any boundries in WttH, he did try and convince her to give Slaying another go, but i dont think he took it too far or anything.
And oh yeah, do Englishmen hug like that?

Hugging's great, it's like a handshake but with your entire body, awesome. Giles needs more only because everyone needs more hugs.

heee I just imagined a person-sized hand hugging a body
I, for one, am not a very huggy person. And I'm a chick, which sucks, because hugging seems to be the polite way for people to say hello or goodbye in informal situations around here in SoCal. Hello and goodbye are always awkward for me. I sympathize with Giles. At least he's a man, though, so he has an excuse to use a handshake in informal situations.

I would hug Giles... but that would be a pushing boundaries thing because my motivations would not be so pure.

I think it's totally okay for Giles not to have been very huggy. He's entitled to some personal space. Besides, he showed he cared - he just showed it in other ways.

I <3 hugs. Even in romantic settings, sometimes hugs are better than kisses.

Giles didnt want to be creepy teacher man i guess lol but in later seasons when the relationships were much more of him as a father figure, not just to buffy but to all of them i think, more hugs were in order. poor Giles.

I'm sure there are moments where everyone goes "Hey, Giles should get a hug here too!" or what not, but I think we need to remember that he was their school librarian in the first 3 seasons. This means that there is a 'mandatory' distance that he had to keep in order for their relationship to not turn slightly creepy. Then after that, they always saw Giles as their teacher/librarian guy so they maintained that stand-offish nature. The age gap between them is quite significant, too, hugs aren't something that Giles is comfortable with, I think.

Personally, as much as Giles deserves hugs his character isn't the hug-type. If they'd made him a hug-fest, it would undermine his character's very nature (my opinion, of course.)
