Can anyone give me the lowdown on how big a difference processor speed makes?

I am looking to buy a new laptop, and I'm curious what the difference in performance would be, say for example, between a 1.3 Pentium M and a 1.6?

I guess my question is: is it worth paying for a processor speed a few tenths up the scale? Cause I'd like to save money on the processor if I can and up the amount of RAM I buy instead.

Thanks in advance!

🙂

it depends on what you intend to use the computer for, if you are going to play graphics heavy games than the processor speed will make a difference, but if you are using the computer for everyday use, spend your money on more memory, RAM is the one part of the computer most people dont spend enough on.

Thanks dM 🙂

I don't really game. I mostly use it for board stuff - graphics, the boards themselves, etc But I like to have a lot of programs open at the same time, hence the wanting to get lots of RAM.

hahahah...the doctor always with the compuledge....thats a cool word....

hahaha...my comp is 6 years old...about 533mghtz...lol...but konzactaconsolus gets it done...

no problem, what kind of computer are you getting, i.e. dell, gateway, etc.

hmm compuledge now thats an interesting word if I do say so myself

Well, I was thinking about a Gateway 450X (laptop) - it seems to be the one where I can get the most for the money and have it not be crap. Dell is just way too expensive and their customer service sucks. And I will never ever buy another Compaq. 🙂

The difference between a 1.3 Pentium M and a 1.6 is about $300 I think, so if it's really the RAM (which I want to get 1GB of that) that would determine the speed of the computer, I don't want to waste the money.

🙂

as a dell owner (2nd dell computer) their so called customer service amounts to blaming microsoft for all the trouble.
And yes indeed compaq is a disaster, a friend of mine bought a new one and it has certainly been testing his warranty a lot lately.
I have never owned a Gateway but I hear they make some pretty solid computers. A Gig of RAM will certainly make the computer a lot better. what kind of OS? XP? or something else?

I planned to go with XP Pro - that seems to be the one that comes with most. I'm a little tentative about it because I've heard about problems with it, especially after the security fixes...I'd go Linux, but despite the fact that Microsoft is evil, everything pretty much works with it and the less hassle in my life, the better lol.

the illest os is windows 98....its virus proof cause its so obsolete already...
