I suppose it depends on what you're looking for in a Tonight Show host. For certain people, Conan will never fit their idea of what a Tonight Show host should be. But then, I wouldn't say he was lousy on "Late Night" unless you're talking about his first couple years. I personally prefer Conan to Jay by a long shot. Not they all aren't to an extent, but Jay followed such a strict seldom-changing formula that his show was just kind of boring. He even made sure to feature the exact same bits the same nights every week. Conan's show was always more off-the-wall. I watched both of their final weeks where both Conan and Jay showed what they considered to be their best moments on The Tonight Show and Jay's were almost entirely forgettable. Conan had a few absolutely brilliant ones, especially the one where he and Mr. T went to an Apple Orchard. I'd say Conan's main problem on The Tonight Show so far is that they seem to be trying to make him a little more safe and predictable as well. They've repeated a few of the new bits (Twitter Tracker, Conan's Tabloid Moment) every week so far, which I think is unnecessary when Conan has so many other good bits that have yet to even debut on The Tonight Show so far. Anyway, it's all personal taste but I like Conan. He doesn't have as much appeal to older viewers (at least according to the numbers) but he's #1 with the young demographic NBC is seeking so I'd say he's about where he needs to be.
