Concerning the Basis of the "Halloween" Episode,

Did anyone else initially think Cordelia doesn't change because she truly dresses not as a cat, but as vapid, so she stays as she is?

The poster was asking if that's what anyone initially thought the first time they watched the episode, before the real reason was revealed. They weren't asking you to explain what happened.

In answer to the question, no that never occurred to me, but it's a cool idea! I was just confused why she didn't change.
 
I initially thought something similar. It's a bit of a clichéd joke that every flakey slutty HS/college girl dresses like either a cat or a bunny for Halloween and that costume is usually just a leotard and some ears. So I first figured she didn't change because she was really dressed as a slutty HS girl.
 
Perhaps, like Big Bad Adam, she's aware of every molecule of her entire being- she's just that self-centred. Therefore the spell couldn't and didn't affect her. 😀

But seriously, no, it never occurred to me why she didn't change- maybe because she didn't really look like a cat, a were-cat possibly (does Buffy even have Were-cats? 😕)
 
I never thought about why she didn't change either. I just kept waiting for the episode to explain why. Maybe if it was never mentioned that she bought her costume somewhere else, I would have theorized.
 
As to why Cordelia wasn't changed, I always thought that it was a sort of role reversal for her and Buffy, where the Slayer was the frightened, helpless, basically useless one where Cordelia, who had been, if not all of that in real life, was pretty close. As for the outfit, well, that was just the sort of thing that the (self acclaimed) hottest girl at Sunnydale High would be expected to wear.

What struck me as strange was, why didn't a single kid in Sunnydale want to dress up as Superman, Ninja Turtle, or a Western gunslinger? (The obvious answer, of course, would be that Ethan carefully eliminated all such costumes from his inventory, but just imagine if he had overlooked a few costumes)
