Concerning the canon/not canon Season Eight debate

Just out of interest, this is a question to any fans who are having trouble accepting the comics as a canon part of the Buffy story due to the change in medium. Would it help if you knew that the story would eventually be picked up back on the screen again? Either as a television series, tv movie or big budget motion picture? Say you knew that everything you read in the comics was the connection between events at the end of the two series and whatever happened next on screen, would that make a difference to how much the comics mattered to you?

The reason I ask is that I always had an idea that Joss may try something like this, even before the canon books were announced. I just thought that given Joss' love of comics the best way he could keep Buffy and Angel around without the two main actors involved was to do it in printed format. Then if there came a day when both Sarah and David were happy to reprise their roles in a movie the comics could be used to set it all up, getting all the characters into place for the story it would tell.

I don't know if that will ever happen but if that was the plan then how many of you non-comic fans would be willing to rethink your position?

See, my problem is not accepting the comic story as canon. I get that. I'm happy that it's continuing. My only problem with the whole situation is that comic books are hard to read in my opinion. I've tries to read some of the earlier Buffy ones, and I just couldn't get into it. If it were in a novel format, I'd be eating it up.

That's my only problem. And yes, Arcane, it would be fabulous if a movie/continuing series were set up, using the season 8 as a set-up for the events.

And, I'll have everyone know...that even though I do not like comic books, I am now the owner of the Buffy season 8 issues 1-4. That does not however mean that I claim myself as superior to those who do not or wish not to read them.

I've no doubt the change from television to comics has been a lot easier to accept for those of us that are used to the comic book format anyway. I've read comics for as long as I can remember (although pretty much all Marvel stuff until recently) so this is nothing new to me. I always found the style of storytelling quite easy to follow but I can see why it might not suit everyone.

I should say to everyone, in case anyone gets the wrong idea about this thread, I've no problem with anyone not wanting to read the comics for any reason. You get involved in a particular subject to whatever degree suits you as an individual and if your interest in a television show is limited to what you see on the screen then that is fair enough. I'm sure if Joss ever did a canon episode of Firefly as a computer game it would take a lot to get me interested considering I really cannot stand those kind of games. If comics aren't your thing then it says nothing about whether you are a true fan of Buffy or not if you choose not to bother with them.

This question is purely a hypothetical one directed at those that refuse to see these stories as being canon at this point and if a live action conclusion would alter that opinion.

Yet apparently there are people somewhere who don't accept it. I hear they exist, but we never hear from them. I wish they would step up. I'd like to understand their reasoning. OK, that's a lie. I'd like to explain to them why they're dead wrong.

Okay, that was kinda six words if you don't like contractions but you get my point. 😉

I have no problem with considering season 8 as canon....I'm just not following it as much as I would if it were in a different medium.

Novel format would be great. TV or Movie would be freaking awesome....hell...I'd take a animated cartoon series, but I'm with SpikedBuffy on the comic book format. I just am not a fan.

I don't actually know of anyone not willing to accept that the story has continued...more likely that they aren't following it with as much vigour.
