Considering giving in and reading Season 8.

Ok so sorry if I sound a little negative but from what I've heard the comics after the show are seriously HORRIBLE. They seem to be recycling old characters and killing off pivotal people just to add shock value, at first I thought they should just give in already. But now I'm so sick of having no Buffy after the show (And I do enjoy reading). That I might just see if I can take to them. Anyway the whole point of this thread is basically for some advice, were there any of you guys here who felt the same as me but ended up really liking the comics?

Please keep in mind that some people do like season 8. They're not the show. If you're looking or more Buffy as in the show... you're not going to find it with season 8. But if you're looking for a fun interesting possible continuation of the story you'll find that with season 8. To enjoy season 8 you have to keep your mind open. I don't think they're recycling story lines and killing of major characters for shock value but that is certainly the popular opinion. of course, I am the kind of person who will generally enjoy any story put in front of me. If you tell me a story, chances are, I will like it. but I say go for it! Read season 8 and make up your mind on your own.

That's what I am hoping for, a likely continuation. I always really loved Queen Of The Slayers, but then again I've also read a couple of things that sound pretty cool in the comics. I might just get the motion comics though. I can't decide.

I had the same hesitations before reading them but I always think that forming your own opinion is better than getting a general idea from what others have said. It's just not the same 🙂

I enjoyed reading s8, do I think it's great? Not really.
Have I by now gotten kind of sick of it and feel disinterested in it? Yes, but that might pass.

So who knows - maybe you'll enjoy it, maybe you won't - but I'm sure you won't regret reading them, I sure don't! It's an interesting ride and enjoyable in the sense that the 'verse lives on 🙂

Go for it! I'm a huge fan and I think it's great. You're also lucky because you can read the whole season in one sitting unlike us who read it in four years. I can also give your links to great meta about S8. A lot of insightful fans wrote great essays on S8. It's a thought-provoking season. It makes you think. I hope you try it and see for yourself.

The first couple of episodes were really not that bad. "No Future For You" and "Wolves At the Gate" are things I can still reread.

But after that it does get increasingly silly and stupid, IMO.

But only you can decide for yourself.

I've read only the first 4 volumes, and still haven't come to the part people can't stand, and I would reccomend you reading it.. because, hey, it's a new experience, and the begining, things I've read, are not bad at all.. especially the begining.

I really like it. Well, there are some things I dislike (and those things are big in the scheme of the season, so that's unfortunate). Just remember that it's an entirely different medium. Some people dislike s8 because they dislike comics. And that's fine, but not very fair to judge it because of that. I like comics, but there are times I've found it difficult to follow because I have to get my brain in gear. I have really liked a lot of the art, and a lot of the storylines and the dialogue.

I disagree. I read S8 wanting exactly something similar to the show and I love it.

What I'm looking for are storylines about Buffy and her friends, something S7 lacked a great deal. Every Scooby has an arc in S8, especially Willow and Dawn, Xander's character is finally treated as improtant and useful, Faith has one of the best arcs, and Andrew develops nicely, and Kennedy is finally a character fans can stand. S8 gave me what S7 didn't. And S7 was on TV.

But the part about the slayer and her friends, you are correct. They do each seem to get their own part. If thats what you meant then I can see that.. I just wish it was done in a bit more realistic manner.

See, this stuff does not bother me at all. It's a comic book, they can and do do those things in comic books. Besides the fact that the events of Chosen set up something larger scale. I do understand that it bothers some people. Just not me! Now we have heard that they'll be taking that down a notch in s9, so I'll be interested to see how that plays out.

And I can respect that. I didn't start reading until last summer, so I had heard inklings of what was happening (I think I had even heard that

I understand what you're saying. I don't like these stuff either -even when they went there on the show. But's a show about magic and different creatures, so these things shouldn't be weird. You know what's impossible? Warren building Buffybot in a matter of two weeks. Now that's unlikely.

My opinion? Don't bother, especially if you're planning on reading it as a continuation of the show instead of its own, separate entity. If you feel that you must read it, just read through No Future For You (or possibly Wolves at the Gate if you like craziness) and then stop. After that, it just gets ridiculous and really only serves to provide frustration.

I just started them and I'm on the second book set. I like them so far. I know I haven't gotten to the ones people really don't like yet, but I'm enjoying what I'm reading. Its not really like watching the TV show at all, so it doesn't change my opinion of that. I think they are worth a read even if you don't like them just to see what they are and understand what is going on in them. 🙂

I already know who Twilight is, but it is a different experience reading them than reading the spoilers. I also think they are fun to read all at once vs over 3 years. I think I would lose patience with them if I had to wait so long.

I don't see them as 100% what had to have happened after the show so much as one canon theory to what could have happened after the show. Sort of like the ideas floating around in Joss' head about what could come next -- the same as maybe resurrecting Tara in season 7 or killing Anya in season 5. They never happened but they were considered. Its interesting but I'm not too stuck on them.

To be honest if you can possibly avoid it dont read them...wait and see if season 9 gets better reaction then try that........or wait to see if the writer decides it might be a good idea to watch some of Angel before he writes the next series......

Why are people bothered by giants, Ents and centaurs when the television show featured vampires, demons, living puppets, fashionable gods, hobbits with leprosy, talking praying mantises, loan sharks, singing Broadway demons, balls of energy molded into teenage girls, witches, warlocks, astral projections and a robotic cyber demon?! Realism is not a part of the 'verse, so just roll with the magic craziness of it all.

Just wait until Season 9 where there's no magic and see how comparatively boring things become.
