BOTH of my dogs are VERY smart, thank you! They understand perfectly, I'm sure! Of course, actions speak louder than words, so when I grab thier leashes, they immediately go haywire and run for the door.

I think pets understand alot more than we credit them...like action or feeling wise. I'm pretty sure my pets know when I'm sick or upset or whatnot.
But yeah I talk to 'em all the time 😛 even with school issues and stuff...gotta have someone to vent to that won't have a reply!

I do talk to my pets (probably too much!) lol. I donno after a few years of having my furry feline friend around you just kind of I donno... end up talking to it without really realising. I also think that pets understand a little more than we give them credit for, my cat seems freakishly smart to not understand me ???
If I were a cat, I know I wouldn't let on that I knew exactly what you were saying, anyway. I mean free food, warm house, endless pats, sleep whenever you want, not a care in the world? Why put all that in jeapordy just so people could poke and prod me to find out how I understand their mindless babble? 😉

Some of them do. I've had dogs and cats who carried on conversations with me, and my in-laws had a dog that you couldn't even spell "c-a-r" or "r-i-d-e" around without it beating you to the door...
I rekon animals understand quite alot. They pick up on your moods by non verbal and tone of voice. I work with disabled kids and horses, we have a pony who is an absolute S%$# if you're an experienced rider/handler, but he is as quiet as a mouse for children and will do anything they ask of him. He understands his job and what his rider needs. We have another lovely mare who will shift her weight if she feels a rider slipping to keep the rider on. All of the horses are voice trained so halt, walk, trot, canter, whoa, stand, no and good boy/girl are words the literally understand. My black mare comes and gives me cuddles when I'm upset.

She knows whos names belong to which person, for example, we say "wheres george?" and she gets all excited and will find the closest thing with his scent on it (he lives away) If they say "wheres gem?" she runs to my old bedroom 🙂 She can do HEAPS of tricks and also knows how to spell WALK! We've tested her and she doesnt react if we spell W-A-L -L or W-A-R-M or simular words but if we spell or say 'walk' she goes mental! She knows the different words for her toys, ball, bunny, squeaky etc. She loves christmas and gets impatient if she doesnt get to open her pressies first and barks at us, she always knows which pressie is for her! I think she understands us. When we were kids she used to bark at us if my sister and I were fighting, If you hit someone in the house (even playfully) she will come tell you off. Sorry shes just so beautiful I cant stop rambling on!

My cat sometimes just freaks me out, when she acts just like our regular little human being - she sometimes seems way too human, but most of the time she prefers acting silly. That's very useful for her - "how can those two-legged giants hurt such sweet lil animal who's got sooo cuuute eyes" she definitelly must be thinking this way..🙂
When she's done with her 'deeds' she comes up to you meaning "well, you know, I peed there, go up and clean it, please!", or in 7 a.m. when you're still in bed trying to catch up that dream your alarm clock had scared away, cat silently approaches you, sits right infront of your face and meows. When you open your eyes she takes off for kitchen inviting you to follow - if you ignore she'll return and bite you.
She knows when she's guilty - she'll pretend innocent and totally dumb, if she sees it didn't help, she'll hide way under the bed, where we won't reach her for sure.
But, the smartest animal among our pets is our old fat rat. He recognizes and distinct our voices - when he was very very small he would hide when he heard Mom and get out only after he heard I returned from work. He also never buys the same trick twice.

I think our cats definitely understand us. In fact, when no one else is in the house I can rant freely to Tom who even does the nod-and-make-eye-contact thing at times. They are great listeners and hold such understanding in their eyes. And how can an animal that sometimes gives you the look of 'you freak, you're insane, now go get me something to eat' *not* understand a word you're saying?

My cat gets me. I think, honestly, a lot of the time she chooses not to listen because she's stubborn like I am. But she gets me. We cool like that.

My other cat understands me, but I think she's afraid of a lot because of my sister. Long story. And I think my boyfriends cat understands us, but she just doesn't give a damn because she's DA SQUIDG and she DOES WHAT SHE WANTS, goddamnit.

I think most animals are far more intelligent than even scientists give them credit for. When we talk to them, even if they don't understand each word, I think a lot of them, especially dogs and cats, and figure out what we want or mean, and especially how we're feeling.
That being said I never really have conversations with animals.

You know what's funny, my dogs hate getting a bath, too....but when they see me getting ready to give them one, instead of running away, they stand there like bumps with these utterly defeated looks on their faces! It's hilarious, you should see them!
What's worse is they're both Lab mixes, you'd think they'd LIKE getting a bath! Nope......hate it!

I don't think it's the water dogs hate as much as the scent of whatever soap we use. Just think about the stuff they love to roll around in! Our stink and theirs are complete opposites!

Alex does seem to recognise certain words, mostly food related :lmao: and I think she even knows how to meow my name, its a phonetically simple one but still, scary sometimes.
I finally got home to see my dog today. I missed her so much! It was so sad when I left, she had her 'pet shop' look on and was shaking with her tail between her legs 🙁 Mum said she was sitting at the door for a while after I left. She is very very well looked after at mums but she always puts the poor neglected puppy look on when she wants her own way!

I find that it depends on my mood. My dogs have selected hearing and understanding. If I'm sad, though, they are always there to listen and it does feel like they understand me. At least they really seem to listen when you need them to. I don't know.
