Cordelia’s Absence

Did Cordelia really ever mention her family on Angel? She never went back to Sunnydale for the holidays or visits? That is also odd.

I agree. In fact, it is odd that she was never mentioned in BTVS. Even Xander was mentioned in ATS. Well, when considered at length, him being mentioned in ATS and him never being shown there as a cross-over material (like OZ, Willow, Faith and Andrew) is very odd. At least he could do a cameo. And I think Cordelia could make a cameo in BTVS too, maybe helping Buffy with her visions...

From a character based view i can understand why Cordy wasn't exactly a major topic of conversation through season four onwards. Her main reason for hanging with the Scoobies was her relationship with Xander. I can't imagine that any of the other Scoobies would really have described themselves as being close to Cordy.

It's like in any group of friends, there are always people there that are only really linked to one other individual, say a boyfriend or girlfriend, and once that relationship ends they drift away again. It was fairly obvious in I Will Remember You that there was still no real affection between Buffy and Cordy. They weren't really friends in any way.

From a story telling point of view it was obviously neccessary to have Cordy already in L.A. by the time of City Of and so the only place to show her leaving would have been at the end of Graduation Day. Obviously this wasn't going to be possible if you wanted to end the third season with the big battle with the Mayor Snake. It would have been something of an anti-climax to then cut to a scene of the Scoobies standing at a bus station, waving Cordy off. Also there is no reason to beieve she left straight away. It could have been a month or more later when Cordy finally left.

So given the fact that there was no real place to show the "Cordy leaving" scene, added to the fact that she wasn't really that close to the other Scoobs, i think it makes most sense that we are left to our own devices to imagine the details. I've always pictured it pretty much being Cordy and Xander hugging and Buffy, Willow and Giles maybe standing in the background just to show some sort of Scooby solidarity as Cordy steps onto the bus and disappears to her new life in Los Angeles. No big, emotional scene. Just a very basic farewell to an old acquaintance.

True, that sounds reasonable, but still, forget about not having a "goodbye" scene, they never really even mentioned her after that. It was like she had never been on the show before! But she did mention the scoobies in Angel a few times, like at the beginning of season 1 when Oz came to LA.

They could have done that, but why bother? If it wasn't needed for the start of season four then why break the momentum of the new status quo?

Like i said, the event was never really going to be all that memorable, given their relationships with each other. Hardly worth going out of their way to film the scene.

Angel had a goodbye scene, and he wasn't friends with the other scoobies. Xander and Giles hated him, in fact.

I don't think it was necessary for her to have a whole good-bye scene but they should have at least mentioned that she left. She was the only regular of Buffy that ever left without an explanation. Not counting what we saw in Angel. A brief "Well Cordy left to LA to become an actress" would have been good enough.

There was one point early in Season 5 where Buffy was trying to describe Glory to Giles and said she was "like Cordelia".

It is odd that Cordelia got so little mention on the show after Season 3, and that Charisma Carpenter never crossed over to reprise her role on the original show. I read that Joss asked her to come back to play a part in the dreams in the S4 finale "Restless" but he couldn't get her, for whatever reason.

Rumours abound of tension between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter on the set of the early Buffy seasons. In the Angel episode "I Will Remember You" they have just one short scene together. Late in that season, in "Sanctuary", Cordelia skedaddles early in the episode. In the script it's because Faith is coming to town, but I wondered if behind the scenes it was because SMG was coming back onto to the set of Angel.

Nodding agreement with VisionGuy, I would have liked to have seen Cordelia get a more fitting departure from Buffy, even just a few words of mention would have been nice. It might have also been fun to see her come back to Buffy, maybe commiserate with Anya about Xander. We only saw those two characters together in one episode of Buffy, "The Wish". But by late in the Angel series Cordelia had changed so much I wonder how she would have fit in coming back to see the Scoobies.

Yeah, exactly. Even Anya, who was barely a character at the point, said she was leaving at the end of season 3 to get away from the stuff that was about to go down. If Anya gets a goodbye, why can't Cordy?

I don't really think it's that big of a deal. Cordelia obviously didn't want to spend any more time in Sunnydale, so she left for LA to pursure her budding acting career. And as for the little mention of her in the ensueing seasons ... let's not forget that Cordelia was never best friends with any of the Scoobies after her little rebar incident in Lover's Walk. And even before that, the only reason she even hung out with the Scoobs was because of Xander.

And after typing all that, I've come to the conclusion that it's really a big waste of time because all in all, it's not really THAT important. So she didn't have a "goodbye" scene. So?

I dont know.... its pretty confusing thinking that they never mentioned her at all in Season 4... but Cordy did grow apart from the Gang towards the end of the season, and the jump from school to university is quite big.... when I made the jump myself there were people that I used to hang out with everyday that I never really menioned again... its an odd time

Thats my explanation!

I know that it's kinda beside the point, but the only reason she and Xander ended up together was because Buffy had them working together. By which I mean, Cordy started hanging with the Scoobies in the first place because she wanted to help. C/X was just the icing on the cake.

I just find it annoying when people don't acknowledge that she was with them (regardless of whether she considered them friends or not) before dating Xander.

i think she was apart of them for a while.
she helped at and all that.
i mean if she didnt wanna be apart of that group we would know.
we knew after they broke up, she wanted nothin to do with all that.

she was also mentioned in Living Conditions. Willow says something along the lines of "'Cause she was bordering on Cordelia-esque." But that's beside the point. She didnt really need a goodbye. I mean, after high school you dont hear from a lot of people. even if they were kinda close, it's natural for the gang to not mention cordy again. its the whole Out of Sight, Out of Mind thing.
