Cordy the bully

When I was a kid. But, around 14 I just realized that I could either let myself get upset about stupid things coming out of the mouths of obviously stupid people, or I could just find a peace in myself and in my own personal strength, and just not care. Yeah, things can still aggravate me, but, I mean, I wouldn't be human if they didn't, right? But, I mean, what's the point in giving someone the satisfaction of hurting you? I just let it go.

Well I can relate to that. I don't let catty comments, things like that, get to me. However, when someone else is being treated like dirt, I can't help but feel bad for them or feel the urge to tell the person off. It just seems like a slight contradiction...haha. You're saying that Cordelia had a right to tell those people off because they were "beneath her" or something, yet you feel that people who do try to upset others with their words are "obviously stupid".

I'mnot saying it's an excuse, more of an explaination as to why she was doing it,it's called immaturity. We have alldone things as a child that we regret. I don't care you who are.

I don't believe Cordelia ever actually cared about anyones feelings enough to wanna hurt them. You're forgetting how completely self-involved Cordelia was. She was a bitch, and she could be mean, but that was only because all she ever cared about, was herself. She was selfish.

So...she wasn't telling them the truth because they needed to hear it? She was just saying it for her own enjoyment? I don't think she'd even call herself a bitch. She seemed pret.ty. peeved when that ghost called her one, and that was before her whole transformation. But maybe she just wasn't ready to face the truth. And someone who is so self involved that they don't even take a second to consider how their words might make someone else feel, that still fits into the "pathetic/stupid" category. I thought you liked Cordelia, earlier you were defending her season 1/2 behavior, but now you're making her sound like those pathetic losers who pick on people who we should all just ignore...which was my point from the very beginning. That's exactly who she was in season 1. A self involved (which usually = insecure) bully. She changed, clearly, but she was definitely a bully back in the day.

And bully doesn't always = lunch money stealing punk like Larry.

Cordy was NOT a bully. She was mean sometimes, sure. But she was honest. Everything she said was true. Sometimes I think people mistake her bluntness with being mean as well, whenreally I don't think she realizes she's being mean.

Anyways, I have always loved her, and still do. Especially in Angel. 🙂

I guess you've never been verbally abused. Good for you. You must think that Cordelia is an absolute moron if you truly believe that she does not know that some of the things she says are mean.
So, saying mean things is okay as long as they are the truth? I don't buy that, nor do I buy that Cordelia didn't know she was being mean. She knew, she just didn't care. Still love her in the end, but it doesn't change how she acted and that it wasn't ok.

Why? Because he was a total dork...at times? She didn't care, she wanted to be with him so she did. It would have made her seem insecure if she hadn't gone back to him, if she hadn't told Harmony off, if she had stayed with her lame sheep friends. It would have made her a sheep. Sheep are insecure. Going out with someone you like, despite what your lame "friends" stay, that takes strength and self confidence.

I think he made her insecure because she would never measure up to the one person he put above anyone else. I would be insecure if my boyfriend constantly talked about, checked out, and mooned over another girl....especially if he was close friends with her. He was always more concerned about either Buffy or Willow, and never her. It always made me feel kind of sad for her, and one of the many reasons why I think Xander is a douche.

I don't think the fact that she was in HS is an excuse ;) but fine. And I don't think that she's a bad person or anything, I really do like Cordy...but imo she was at one time, a bit of a bully.
But she was honest.

Are we talking about the same Cordy who pretended to be an idiot to fit with the Cordettes and practised her fake laugh in Reptile Boy? I like her but she could and did lie quite often when it suited her goals. She insulted "losers" because she could get away with it and it was a way to increase her status at school. Not because she was so unwilling to deceive that she had to call them for they were. Just look at the end of Out of Mind, Out of Sight where Cordelia thanks Buffy for helping her, than Mitch appears and she starts with the insults as she has to keep her reputation.

LOL I thought that was funny....and let's be honest....they DID need help with their fashion. lol

I see it as the opposite. When she's called a bitch, she's reminded of who she was, the REAL Cordelia Chase. Being a bitch isn't an insult to her, it's a compliment, it's a point of pride for her. She says so herself. "I'm not some snivelling, whining, little cry-Buffy. I'm the nastiest girl in Sunnydale history. I take crap from NO ONE." And I defy anyone to watch this and not break out into a huge smile and get intense chills at the same time when she says "The Bitch is back." I'm getting tears of joy in my eyes just thinking about it.

But she isn't. She doesn't pick on people. As a matter of fact, I don't recall Cordelia ever unneccesarily insulting anyone outside of the first two episodes. Please present a list of all the supposedly dispicable things she did that would warrant her being called a "bully."

That's a good point, about her remembering "who she is"...never thought of it that way. And okay, I meant to just say "season 1" I don't know why I threw 2 in there. She also does that obnoxious taunting thing with the chocolate in Out of Mind, Out of Sight! Haha I can't think of anything besides the Willow dress incident and the chocolate thing. Those are the only moments that totally reminded me of a bully.

Thank you. I don't think that having absolutely no tact whatsoever = bully, but it sure as hell was uncalled for at times. There are some mean things that I'd never say to someone because it is unnecessary. Cordy's little speech to Buffy outside of The Bronze (When She Was Bad) is a great example of being blunt when it is necessary. Buffy was acting ridiculous (which was to be expected), and Cordelia was trying to help, in her own way. I appreciate honesty like that.

Even in Angel, s1, she thought she was to good to date Doyle, until she realized that he done something heroic for her. She grew up thankfully, but even in Spin the bottle (As4) she made fun of Fred, which shows it was ingrained in her, she's a bully. She's GoTTA be the cente of attention. BUT, i liked her in Angel, as Angel and Gunn put her in her place(eg, a secratery)

To respond to your rep: Quite the contrary, I dont think that it excuses the behavior at all, just that it is typical of female bullies.

In response to your rep: I WAS Willow when I was in high school. I was a nerd. But the actions of others don't bother me anymore. Everyone deals with their own problems their own way, and I think people that put down others are just insecure.

When did she ever think she was too good for Doyle? Doyle never asked her out until he died.

What's the difference between Cordelia and a bully? Cordelia tells the truth but she doesn't filter it. That lack of a filter is what's important. A real bully picks on someone because they are bigger and stronger, then they physically and mentally break them down. When Cordelia made fun of Willow in season 1 because of her outfit? HER OUTFIT WAS TERRIBLE, if Willow was a real teen in the 90's and she went to school looking like that people would laugh at her. Hell, even some people watching the show got a little chuckle out of her outfit.

Cordelia says the things everyone is thinking but too afraid to say. I agree that what she says is mean, but I feel telling the truth doesn't make you a bully, it just makes you a b*tch.

In YOUR opinion her outfit was terrible. Some people aint into 'other peoples perception of coolness'. And, Come the hell on, Cordy took the piss outta Doyle on plenty of occasions, she even said once that he 'looks like a retard'!!!!!!

I wouldn't pick on Willow's outfit because if she wants to wear that damn dress...then so be it. I get weird looks all the time because I literally borrow my great grandmother's clothes. I honestly didn't laugh at her outfit...it was cute, for her.

Lol. More like Cordelia put them in their place. And you obviously didn't understand Spin The Bottle. Cordelia was put back into who she was a teenager. So it has nothing to do with anything being "ingrained" in her. And she made a bitchy, sarcastic remark to Fred, that's not being a bully. If anyones being a bully at any point in that situation it's Gunn.

Lol i got Spin The Bottle. It showed the charaters as their true self. I agree Gunn was a bit of a bully, but it gave Cordy a taste of er own medicine. And Gunn put her in in her place plenty :)
So if someone that wears clothes that you think are lame, then you should bully them?????????????????????????? Didnt think so.

Haha you are sorely mistaken if you think that its bullying. Like you have never made fun of someone ever? Does that make you a bully? Didn't think so.

Yes, if I make fun of someone then I am engaging in bullying behavior (excluding the kind of poking fun that friends do and reciprocate)

Making fun of someone because of the way they dress...is being a bully, in my opinion. I have never done that in my life. I've done it jokingly with friends. Cordy clearly was not friends with Willow at that point.
So Cordelia, from s1 to Angel, verbally made fun of people, from Doyle being retarded to Xander being poor to Buffy having no future plus loads of other things, if that doesnt make her a bully i dunno what does. For example, Fred would never have done to people what Cordy done.

I'm not saying guys can't bully like that... I'm saying that, in the 90s, that was how females typically bullied... Males typically bullied in more overt or physical manners then.

1. When did she call Doyle retarded? (Assuming she did) it was said as a joke, it wasn't something she constantly brought up and she wouldn't have said it in the literal sense. A one time joke does not mean she was a bully to Doyle

2. Xander was poor. Remember that filter I was talking about? She's a b*tch, not a bully

3. Buffy doesn't have a future. Buffy will always be a Slayer and she will always be fighting. Again, Cordelia is telling the truth

Fred is a completely different person, she doesn't have the attitude or b*tchiness of Cordelia.

In YOUR opinion her outfit was terrible. Some people aint into 'other peoples perception of coolness'. And, Come the hell on, Cordy took the piss outta Doyle on plenty of occasions, she even said once that he 'looks like a retard'!!!!!!

No. Not in my opinion.

It was in Joss's plan to make her awkward, shy and nerdy. It was in the costume designers plan to give her the most bland and unflattering outfit they could find. It was in the make-up artists plan to give her generic straight hair and no real make-up. In the beginning of the show Willow was supposed to be an unpopular teenager, if you didn't understand that from watching the first episode than you completely missed the point of her character. She does have the "cute and adorable" thing going, but at that point in the show, she was supposed to be the shy girl who is afraid to stand up for herself or embrace her sexuality (despite being pretty hot...as we see in later seasons)

So if i called someone a fatty id not be a bully but just telling the truth? And It was also Joss's plan to make Caleb a sexist murderer, just like his plan to make Cordy a bully. Maybe i'l go out 2morrow and make fun of the first nerd i see.
Cordy to Doyle - ''you're alot smarter than you look, course, you look like a retard'' - Rm/wa/vw. Not dis similar to me saying ''you're alot straighter than you look, course, you look like a gay''. Or am i wrong?

Cordelia never made fun of an overweight person (unless I'm forgetting something) which is something completely different than calling someone a nerd.

In 1990's North American society, it's generally unacceptable to call someone fat. Mainly because some people find it very difficult to lose weight and staying committed to a new lifestyle is very difficult (especially with all the temptations). Some people can't change their physical appearance and it's not okay to attack them on that. Being a nerd is something that North Americans have embraced and it isn't as much of an insult as being called fat. An example of nerds being cool is the 1984 film "Revenge of the Nerds"...those guys were awesome

So in summary, don't generalize bullying, there are "levels". In society being called a nerd is not as bad as attacking someone on their weight. Bullying is bad at any level, but it happens. Cordelia had enough sense to know when to not cross the line. Some would argue making fun of Xander because he's poor is going to far, but he insulted Cordelia equally as bad, neither are perfect.

Cordy to Doyle - ''you're alot smarter than you look, course, you look like a retard'' - Rm/wa/vw. Not dis similar to me saying ''you're alot straighter than you look, course, you look like a gay''. Or am i wrong?

Retarded and Gay are two different things. Again, she was a b*tch, not an Angel. And Doyle loved her...people don't love people who (according to you) bully them.
