Cost of living #3

I keep buying a meal deal everyday and it's expensive.
Tell me about it! I used to always prepare my lunch the night before but recently I have been lazy and have been buying lunch every day.
It all adds up especially when the Tesco meal deal price has gone up. And I don’t even look at my receipt on the days when I go to M+S instead

My sausage rolls, cake bar and banana lunch cost no more than 60p! Not the healthiest today, but cheap!

Sweet!
Post box bill is paid for the next year 🙂 with a discount for paying early. Phone recharge goes through by monday so thats the phone paid for the next 6 months too.

I am trying to figure out how I can catch these feral kittens in the yard. Maybe I can sell them 😝 I will sell them as snake food if they eat my splendid fairy wrens!

Ugh, you guys, I am not in a good place financially. The cost of everything keeps going up, and I am falling behind, despite working as many shifts as I can.

Working on my budget today is depressing, lol.

How do folks make extra money? I don't have much to sell on eBay now, and I tried doing Doordash again but it says my account is deactivated. I appealed, but it's been a week with no response.

Have you looked at writing as a way to supplement your income? A lot of magazines no longer have staff writers because they can't keep them busy, but they do accept queries from freelance contract writers. I have done this in the past and there is a demand for articles from a few hundred words to short-story length. Find a publication that appeals to you, look up their website and determine if you are a good fit from their instructions to freelance writers. Pay can go anywhere from zero to a dollar a word.

As for my finances:

My Miata is getting much bigger than it was when I bought it. I hauled $102.77 in groceries in it. It never could have done that when it was new. It also chugged down $56.55 worth of fuel like a frat boy at a kegger. It never used to be able to do that, either.

I'll look into it!

Sorry to hear that 🙁 I cant help at all on making money as working more is not permitted on a disability pension, so the only thing I that I can personally suggest is ways to cut back. It is really tough the first year after you move before finding the groove of the new place. It will get easier! I hope it improves soon for you.

I have a few things I'm planning on selling when I have time to sort out ebay.

I don't dye my hair, much healthier for my hair and obviously no cost. I do get it cut though, once or twice a year just to neaten it up.

I did buy the switch on the credit card was an unnecessary luxury but, I don't have a television and all the streaming services so it in a way has become my entertainment device. I've worked out how to pay it off, so it won't be long before I am back credit card free

Bringing my empty college backpack to put shopping in instead of paying for a bag because I can never remember to bring one, has changed my life!

It can fit a lot in too!

That made me laugh! I have 5/6 backpacks and each backpack has several reusable bags inside (mostly Doc Martens "I love my Docs" bags - they're 5p and fabric).

I even have a bag in a wallet on my key-ring. I've saved a fortune on carrier bags (though admittedly an even bigger fortune on Doc Marten boots).

@Joan the Vampire Slayer - seriously 5p in the shop (and I have bought a couple without buying the boots) - and some enterprising people are selling them for £5 on Ebay. Could you do something similar?

I only have two reusable bags total, from Trader Joes, so yes I need more!
A local store here had issue with backpack. So I usually use fancy cloth grocery bag that's supposed to keep cold stuff cool for few hours.
They sell their own, but found a bigger & better logo-less one on Amazon.

I have one of those. It's great for camping or road trips.
I have been doing well packing my own lunches recently.

Now only spending one pound on a soft drink.

Just done my online shop for next month, quite heavy on the meat as want to get enough for two months as know that my May shop needs a lot of toiletries.
So I have 2 packs of bacon
A whole chicken
Pack of 6 sausages
A pack of 2 pork chops
That will easily do for 2 months of meals, there's some chicken and bacon pies in the freezer as well.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if someone moved out after the beginning of the year but before the new rates took effect. Would they move to collect the difference in new and old rent in court? Would any of this stand up in court? Does your contract allow for this?

They would have to pay retroactively as they possessed the property at the time when the change was supposed to have happened. Of course it would stand up in court and is part of our contracts. This is a rare situation, but if anyone was to kick a fuss out of it, they would be silly. The reason it happened is because I have a landlord that has obliged themselves to negotiate with the tenants association, so this is a risk you take as a tenant. As mentioned, it is a rare situation, usually the new rents are done on time with no problem.

As it is, rather than what the landlord wanted (a raise of 10.9%), it has now been settled with a third party and the final raise is 4.5%
Even if you're the person who have to pay that one month retroactively in the hypothetical, you're still saving money, as opposed to what the landlord would have charged you, if they had been able to.

The alternative is having a landlord like one I work with, which is private and beholden to no one. They raised rents by 50% from one month to the next a couple of years ago, then you have no one to complain to. It's pay up or get out.

So while the idea of retroactive rent may seem crazy to some, I'll take it over the alternative.

So theoretically if the landlord did not oblige themselves to negotiate they could have raised the rent 50% as they wanted? What would be the benefit for the landlord to agree to a third party negotiation?
