Cost of Living #5

Look at how you can reduce your costs, can you switch providers for anything, are there things that you can stop paying for temporarily until you have more money.
I have! There's really nothing I can do. My utilities are by far my highest expense, next to my insurance and car payment. And the utilities companies have a monopoly, so I have no options to shop around.

sorry, I shouldn't have said "no chance" of getting a cheaper one. I was being presumptuous based about all of the data I read of the "average" car loans, etc.

No way you can change your car for a cheaper one?

I do have a few "luxuries" that if I really need to can drop, but they are charities rather than things for me. One I have decided to drop in the new year anyway. Its only £5 per month, but it's £5 I could be saving. I'm waiting for the new year as they have a seed catalogue that's due out in December where I can choose 6 varieties and that's part of my donation. So once I order those I'll drop the donation and save me a little money. The other I'm very reluctant to get rid of is my child sponsorship, its one of my higher monthly bills, but I feel like I do make a difference to the child and her family. She's now 12, so she's unlikely to get another sponsor if I give it up as well. However I know if things get worse, the charity will let me have a payment break, and I can restart paying again after a few months.

No, I still have a car payment but it is almost paid off.
My "cheap" car is probably going to have cost me about £1,500 in bits this year! It's a Fiat Panda for goodness sake!
My last car got like that, ended up scrapping it, and finding another car on facebook of all places! It ran fine but would have cost me more than it was worth to get it through the next mot. This car is also cheap on tax, so I'm hoping that it won't need much come February and mot due.

If she still has car payments there is no chance of getting a cheaper car. Used car prices are still overly inflated at the moment and then to roll your current payment onto the new "cheaper" car just makes it cost that much more.
Never bought a car with payments so not sure how it works, figured a cheaper car meant cheaper payments.

In theory, but you still have to pay for what you owe on the car you are trading in. Any value of the trade-in goes to paying off the loan. If you owe 20 on the car and they allow you 10 in trade that means the additional 10 on the loan is tacked onto the cheaper/new car payments. And then the cycle just repeats itself.

Ah I see, yeah, won't be getting a car on finance anytime, ever!

Feeling much better today. Watching Survivor always reminds me that even the rich and successful of the world feel hopeless and chuck a tanty when they are hungry and cold.

Got roast beef coming in an order today 😀 my neighbour gave me some cabbage too and I have some potatoes to use. So I am stoked because I am sick of bread and beans. I am so looking forward to it. I went out in the ministry on the weekend and that really helped me mentally too. Its nice when people are nice.

Long term I am still going to have to move to a place with cheaper/easier food. But the rental crisis means there are not even affordable ROOMs for less than I pay now in rent, let alone trying to get a place on my own in a city. It will take me ages to save up a bond, maybe by then prices will drop or they build enough places to house the population. I got a rent assistance boost, so that helpful for now.

There is currently a huge tent on the neighbours front lawn, and 4 bus/RV's parked along the train line. Thats how dire it is, even in this tiny town! The next town over scrapped some of the planning laws so that people can live in prefab sheds. Im so happy I dont have to worry about Christmas. That would have broken me for sure.

I have no bread or beans! However I do have shops nearby so instead spent my last £2.30 on chicken breasts and made curry as I had a jar sauce in the cupboard, so that will last me until my delivery on Thursday.
I do have the issue of what to have for lunch though, but I have lots of snack type of things as I baked apple bread and banana bread.

The roast beef is not coming 😭 coles had none in stock. Typical. Everything on special is never in stock.

Oh well. There was chicken in the order too. I can still have a yummy dinner.

Got myself a free pumpkin yesterday, so I'll be having that for a few meals, I got chickpeas in the cupboard so I'll probably do a curry type dish with it, and freeze a few portions for another time.
It's payday today, so once that's gone in I'll be able to plan the month.

My water company is giving away items to help save water, given that I'm in rented I couldn't get much, but got a gadget to go in my kitchen tap, some sticky tape things that let you know if the loo is leaking and a shower timer. Probably won't make any difference to me, but have a look if you can get anything. I'm with Welsh Water, but I imagine most uk companies do something similar.
I'm waiting on my tesco email to see if I have any substitutions or missing items for my delivery tonight. Because I emptied the freezer I'm spending a bit more on food this month, but still trying to keep the monthly budget under £120 for the entire month. Usually it's around £100 per month, but the freezer stuff will last more than a month, especially the veg.

My water company sent me a kit too.
I checked all my stocks of deodorant, loo roll and soap etc and I probably have enough until next year, but if I can do one more run to Reject shop/Aldi for a top up, it might get me through the summer holidays, and the expected summer holiday petrol prices.

I sorta forgot i had a backlog of stuff stored up, so that has eased my mind a lot, because I can put off restocking of things if it gets that dire. But i will re-stock while i have the option to do so.

I have already been using my giant dog size cooling mat for me to avoid the air con 😝 works up to about 32C for me. The air fryer continues to be a great investment for me, I hope I continue to make good investments!

I think the cat might take me over my £120 hoped for budget, he needs cat litter and possibly dried food this month. Can't not buy him litter and food though, but I usually look for deals online for both. Might just get a small bag of each this month and buy bigger bags next month as I'll need less food. However I will need to get loo rolls next month. I'll have to see what I can do, see what prices are first.

So first of all even with the increase in living expenses, I'm lucky enough to not generally struggle; I always have enough food for me and my cat and can generally eat what I feel like and can afford some treats like getting a massage or a pedicure once a month, though I definitely have cut down on those things in the past year. I also basically don't go out drinking anymore which does save money, though why I'm doing that is unrelated to the cost of living expenses.

However, the part that really worries me is that I'm planning to move to a different city, where my boyfriend lives. He has a lease for the next 2 year in a one bedroom apartment, so I do need my own flat. Basically all apartments I've seen so far are more expensive than the place I currently live in, where I'm just thinking that while I can probably manage the increase in fixed costs, it will mean some more financial planning and cutting down on things.

And the part that super worries me is how much it will cost to actually move. I'll have to pay a deposit, probably need to pay for some repairs and renovating in my old apartment, need to get some new furniture (some of my current one is really long past its expiration date) and then pay to actually move an entire apartment worth of stuff to a different city - I've never done that and am scared of how much that will cost, probably several thousands.

Yeah moving costs more than you expect!

Yeah, moving is so expensive.
My food shopping for the month, not including the dried cat food and the cat litter, has come to £116, and I'll probably need to spend maybe £2 later in the month on bread and milk but that's it. So my £120 idea is on track, except for the £30 I'll spend on the cat, but that will last into the new year at least.

I was shocked to learn how much they're charging for gaylords now.

I heard on the radio that they are changing the air b&b/short term rental laws. And incentivising owners with $10,000 to offer dwellings for long term rent over holiday accommodation. I havent seen anything about it on the mainstream news yet though.

Rent assistance went up again. So thats nice 🙂 the pension is now almost double of what I lived on when I first moved here. Petrol eats a lot of that up, but just seeing that size of a number hit the bank account brings me great relief. Plus, since the cost of living stuff is all over the news now, people seem kinder in general. Its really odd. I havent been yelled at on the street or glared at in the shops for ages.

Interesting. It seems the opposite here. People are stressed and not being very kind.
I keep seeing things I want to buy, but I can't spend any more money this month.
I am going to go to aldi after work to get bread, tea and milk, maybe some crumpets as well, as I can freeze them for later in the month.
The cat has everything he needs now though, so there's nothing I need to get now for him.

My car has enough diesel for the month, but I'll definitely have to fill it up next month.

I looked at my energy bill forecast and possibly going up by at least £40 a month by February, so I really can't use the heating or oven over winter.
