Cost of Living #7

Florida oranges certainly seem to be in doubt. Looks like orange juice futures are going to go up.
Any exports from Florida, as not sure what port damage is currently like. The map I saw put it very close to Port Canaveral (probably not spelt right!)

I have now been offered 3 free horses from different people just this week. All I need is a place to put them!

You should accept all three of them then organize a home for abandoned horses and see if you can get some government subsidies to keep your horses fed and housed. Some people have a knack for using other people's money and there is no reason you can't be one of them.

Sorta already been there and done that in a previous job. I actually do have a business plan in mind for small scale rehoming racehorses - which is relatively easy to get funding for right now - but finding a property that allows riding with all of the liability issues these days is difficult.

If I won lotto, I would buy a property, buy my own insurance and start a not for profit to cover the cost of upkeep for the horses. Its funny, whenever I think of winning lotto - its always to set me up to work! Where as most people want to win lotto to retire - I already know how limited that life is. I'd set up work for myself. Maybe I should start buying tickets again... My neighbour won $800 last week!

I'd forgotten that alongside the electricity going up, my internet did too.

I was slightly concerned about my phone bill, incase I had used it too much in Norway but that's not increased which is good.
Cost of living is insane but I’ve made some changes recently that are helping:

I switched my internet, and now it’s $50 instead of $65. So that’s something.

I also got a roommate, which is helping financially for sure.

And lastly. I have been visiting the food party once a month - which is all that’s allowed. This last time, I got a great assortment of nice produce, peanut butter, tomato sauce, bread, hummus, coffee, rice and beans and meat for my roommate, since I don't eat meat. It helps stretch our food budget so much.

I did manage to drop the price of my electricity £6, not much but I'm hoping I can drop it even more once octopus restart their saving sessions.

I'm on the hunt for any free apples, but haven't seen any yet this year, I might be too late. Well I did have one bag a couple of weeks ago. I did look at chestnuts but I've only seen tiny ones this year.

Have you tried growing anything at home? It is possible to set up a window box inside the house for growing salad greens for most of the year, for example.

This is where the expression "by hook or by crook" came from. You can take apples from the orchard property that are overhanging the road legally if you have a cane and you extend it into the trees. Do you live near any orchards?

This is what I thought! If plants are hanging over the fence, they are free. One of my neighbours asked if she could pick some of my jasmine. I was surprised she even asked! Its hanging over the fence on to the roadside. Go for it! Saves me trimming it haha.

It was so hard not to steal cuttings from the golf course the other day... Next time I will bring a backpack.

Funny you say that, I actually just set up my own little inside herb garden!

But beyond that, no. I don’t know anything about gardening. I’d like to learn, and at some point have a small outdoor garden, but I’m so busy and I feel very intimidated with where to start and how to maintain it.

Herbs are the best starting point :) try rosemary and thyme and mint first.

There is quite a lot of overlap between herbs and salad greens; I have done the same things with herbs. If you can buy lettuce and the like as baby plants, that makes it a bit easier, but otherwise just sow a few seeds of different plants at a time in the same trough, or in a seedling box and transplant them otherwise. Inside, you usually don't have to worry about slugs getting the baby plants.

It just invites the slugs in to my house!
Oof the news really blowing it up this week. Increasing reports of scurvy due to people not being able to afford fresh food and living off takeaway coupons.

A lady on tv now having a cry because she has $100,000 left on her mortgage that she wont be able to pay off in time for retirement... Shes in nice clothes with hair done, the lot - she maybe doesn't have a cost of living issue, perhaps a living beyond her means issue.

Internet has gone up another $10 per month. Chocolate is up $1. Petrol is still down a bit, so thats nice. Getting my car serviced on Monday and hopefully that will only be around $600, but we shall see... They always try to rip me off with things like pollen filters and light globes and windscreen wipers. Even when I tell them 4 times not to do those things. Those are the times I wish I had a guy with me.

I already have slugs coming into my house from under the floor at night!

Or anyone who knows more about cars! But yeah, they do generally seem to try and sell less needless rubbish to men.

Why am I looking at holidays, I have no money! Just because its a £1 deposit doesn't mean I can afford the actual holiday!

Write the story about your holiday and sell it to a magazine. I have made money from articles I have sold and you certainly have enough literary skills to do it.
