Could A Kendra Spinoff Have Worked?

Kendra is my favorite character in Buffy so of course I'd say she deserved a spinoff. What do you guys think? I loved how she was so different from Buffy. She was a trained, studied Vampire Slayer and it would have been cool to see her develop more 'human' like traits? To see her make friends, fall in love, and of course, kill vampires.

I liked Kendra too. Have you seen season three? Because appears an other slayer that replaces Kendra and for a while there were rumors of a spin off for her (perhaps along with Spike, but I'm not sure about this)
To do a spin-off with Kendra would have to resurrect her and I think that would work, at least to me 🙂

Hate to rain on the parade for a character you really like, but I don't think so.

I never found Kendra overly interesting. She always seemed like a vehicle to drive Buffy's individual storyline, and beyond how she, or her presence, was affecting Buffy, I never really got the appeal of her. The "What's My Line" series are two of my favorite episodes ever though.

Not sure how deep you are into the series, but a character named Faith joins the show in S3, and I would have been very interested in a spinoff based around her.

I agree with [MENTION=11975]Robb Stark[/MENTION]. And on top of what he said, I don't think Bianca Lawson is a strong enough actress to lead a show. I've seen her in a few things, and I find her very wooden, which worked for the character of Kendra, but it also works better as a supporting character. I don't think she would have worked in the long run on Buffy either (but I do like her character). And I'm glad we got to have Faith after, she was a much better choice for the series overall.

I liked Kendra, but dont think she could have had her own show. I think the show would have been about seeing her adjust and become more normal, and I think it would have been hard to relate to. That story is better for a supporting character where you get the humor and the drama of it.

I think if there was a Tales of the Slayer kind of spin off, she would do well in a multi-ep arc, but not as a solo spin off

I've actually only seen 3 full episodes. The ones with Bianca because she's my favorite actress. But I've wanted to get into the whole series for a while. That's why I joined here. So I can talk to people about the series as I watch.

Of course, the character must have a story to tell and it must be credible. I think that potentially any character could give rise to a spin off and do not forget that Angel had to die almost immediately, however, things went differently, fortunately.

100% agree. Kendra was a storyline and character tool, to be put up against Buffy as what Buffy could have been etc etc. She was just a reflection of a different kind of slayer, to me not much of a character in her own right without Buffy - whereas Faith was.

It also doesn't help that she wasn't the best actress. I feel sorry for her having to put on an accent that she obviously couldn't pull off, but she would never have been able to hold her own show.

I suppose there's a measure of truth to this. With the right direction and enough time to fully map it out and execute it, just about any character can be developed. We didn't have a ton of time with Kendra, so who knows? Still, I saw the potential in Angel's character right from S1, in a way I didn't with Kendra.

Yeah I didn't expect everyone to be as open to a Kendra spin off. Everyone has their opinion so I understand. Bianca got me interested in Buffy and I really did love Kendra. But I'm super excited to watch the entire series now.

Good point. I would have really liked to see Buffy and Kendra team up more too. If not a Kendra spin-off, a Kendra role on Season 3 permanently would have been really cool. I think her and Buffy were great together. And her death (If she still died) would have been even more heartbreaking after being around for an entire season rather than only 3 episodes.

I like Kendra. I don't know about a whole show...maybe if they showed a little more of her on Buffy 1st. Maybe she could have been the slayer to go bad after getting a taste of regular life. I think Bianca could probably pull it off, she was good at playing a bitch (did you see Save the Last Dance? And kind of on Sister Sister) That accent was bad tho, she could've worked on it lol

Kendra was included to show the contrast between the free-wheeling independent style of Buffy and the by-the-book intensively trained style the Council preferred. As such, the character works well and dies showing the vulnerability of discipleship vs. independent thought. Her story is much more limited - go see the watcher everytime you run into something unexpected. Sometimes you don't have the time and you shouldn't spend it that way even if you do have it.

The only way you could have an interesting Kendra show is if she finally became independent, rejected Council control and started to be more like Buffy. Otherwise, it would be like having a "Robin" spinoff of Batman. Not very interesting when the character has to get permission for everything she does.

I don't think so do be honest. Kendra was interesting because she was the exact opposite of Buffy and it was fun to see the different personalities clash while working together. I just don't think that a Kendra spin-off would work because she is so much like a robot and it would get boring quickly so they would have to develope her character so quickly that I just don't see it working. They would have to make her go from basically a slayer robot type to someone more personable so quick to make her likable as the main protagonist.
