Could a Slayer refuse?

I started watching BtVS S1 again today just to listen to the commentaries (yes, I have no life besides school, let's move on), and got to wondering. What would happen if a newly called Slayer refused to do the job? I specify "newly called" because a veteran Slayer would keep getting jumped by monsters who knew who she was and be forced to kill them on a daily basis.

OR, what if a Slayer went rogue like Faith, but there wasn't the fun fluke of another Slayer around to pick up the slack? Would the Council have her killed so another Slayer could be called? Or do they have contingency plans for something like this?

Something to think about. What do you all think?
 
a Slayer can refuse the Calling all she wants...it won't make it go away. she'll have to deal with the dreams and the visions, and the fact that she'll be stronger/faster/better than everyone around her. i think it would be hard to ignore it after the first few weeks. also, can't some demons and older vamps sense a Slayer? like the power she has inside her?

i've always wonder what would have happened had the Faith senario happened during another time. i think maybe the Council would have something in place for that kind of thing happening. i don't think they would want to leave the world without an active Slayer while they worked on rehabilitating the current one. the team that was sent to 'recover' Faith was willing to kill her when they couldn't bring her in. so i'm guessing that the Council would have a team in place to deal with something like that pretty much since the Council was formed.
 
just to add a little to what lyri said, if the slayer was in the vicinity of where people got attacked, she'd also have to deal with the fact that she was the only person destined to deal with the vampires or demons, and was responsible for any deaths that they caused. considering that there are hellmouths in sunnydale and cleveland, and there are a ton of vampires and demons in LA, quite likely there are at least a few everywhere, whom she would notice being that she knew about her calling. most people would have some kind of reaction to that.
 
Initially, in "Welcome to the Hellmouth," Buffy was attempting to deny her calling. She ended up doing it anyway because she felt responsible to those around her and knew the consequences if she refused. But what if the new Slayer was incredibly immature, stubborn, and just didn't give a &*^% about her fellow humans?

OR what if the thing with the Slayer that Faith's supposed to be taking out in "No Future for You" (I can't remember her name) happened when there were no other Slayers?
 
Well, since all the pottentials became slayers, I guess if one refused, there would be all the other ones, right?

True, except that my hypothetical scenario occurs when there ARE no other Slayers, still just "one girl in all the world." I just used Faith's target as an example of how bad a Slayer could go.
