Could flashbacks to L.A. have been used in S1?

Do you think that, considering that the 1992 movie has been ruled as not being in the same canon as the series, they could have possibly had a few flashbacks to what Buffy's life after she burned down the high school had been like?

I think that maybe we should have seen at least some of these because it would give more weight to how reluctant Buffy was to assume the role of the Slayer in Sunnydale.

We got that a little bit in Angel's flashbacks when he's watching Buffy right after she's initially called as the Slayer. I kind of always assumed that Buffy burning down the gym happened right before she moved to Sunnydale, and that they're wasn't much of a time gap.

If you take the graphic novels into effect (Which aren't generally considered canon but aren't marked as being non-canon), there is almost a year inbetween the burning of the gym and the start of S1. After she burns down the gym, she leaves and goes to Las Vegas for awhile before she comes back to L.A. That's right before her parents get divorced.

I think that at the time Joss just wanted to distance himself from the movie as much as possable.
I think he was still burnt by the way the movie went down

I don't think it was necessary to see those flashbacks. I mean it was pretty self explanatory that she burned the gym down due to vampires. I feel like the flashback we were shown with Angel and her being in LA, going against her first vampire was good enough.

I would have loved to have seen some flashbacks. I always kind of felt that there was this whole other side to Buffy that we never got to see - although I guess we saw it by having Cordelia. I guess the writers felt they showed enough when they saw her getting called and when she fought her first vampire. I don't know, call me greedy, but I wanted more.

Sorry to go off topic, but I would've liked it if we had flashbacks or mentions of the slayer that came before Buffy. Season 5 would've been perfect (even though kinda far away) since she wanted to learn more about her slayer line. Even for season 1, who was she? What happened to her? How did she die? I thought Buffy would've been interested in knowing that information.

It would be interesting, but it does not require a flashback to L.A.
Does anybody know if Joss' original script is online anywhere? I ask because he has said that the series is a continuation of that script, not the movie that was made. I'd love to read that script and see what could have been.

I know there's a version of it floating around. Just google search "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" 1992 script. Should be what you're looking for 🙂
