I agree! -This has always been my POV. Vampire CAN breathe, but don't HAVE to breathe.
But also, in the Spike-torture-by-drowning-by-UberVamp scene, I do think that a great deal of that torture was mental; after all, Spike had just gotten over his "crazy" period, maybe he wasn't quite un-crazied just yet. And The First was using Dru and Buffy more than any other "body" to torture him. Why? Because those were the two women Spike actually loved. And everybody knows that when you love someone, it's pure torture. 😉
