Blurb: Final issue. "Last Gleaming," art 5 of 5. Season Eight has at last brought Buffy the long way home, and betrayal comes in the shape of the closest, most unexpected individual of all. Reeling from their losses, the Scoobies will never be the same again.

To me this suggests that the people on the Jeantry cover are now "The Scoobies". So that begs the question of where Dawn and Spike are?

On the covers themselves-Dear God, the Chen one is stunning. And on the Jenatry one, Dawn is breaking. Twilight is over.

The gang appears to be in mourning clothes too.

I can actually see Dawn being the betrayer, it would certainly fit the criteria.

Also, given what has been said about Angel lately, I have a truly singing feeling that he will have to kill Dawn.

Bye bye Dawn I guess 🙁

Oh and really nice covers! I like the second one best! And yea where is Spike?

I think Dawn is going to fulfill her path as she was supposed to in The Gift.

A friend on another forum just pointed out that if Angel killed Dawn he would hardly be standing behind Buffy like that, participating in the grief. So, scratch that idea.

Holy crap that Chen cover is awesome!! It looks so much like Sarah!

It also makes me a little happy that Spike is nowhere to be seen, lol

So the whole *key* plotline will be used again? And then why is Angel(after what he did) with the Scoobies but not Spike? They clearly stated Spike would be back in s9 so he must not appear in this cover for a reason 🙁 Hopefully he didn't have to kill Dawn, because that'd be horrible knowing the relationship they had... And also another reason for Xand to dislike Spike, ugh.

The Jo Chen cover is absolutely stunning. A beautiful way to bring things full circle.

Kinda interesting that the legendary scythe looks completely fuxed.

The end of all magic perhaps?

That's what I am thinking too. Faith will be the Slayer now. Also, look how Angel is very much not on fire with that blazing sun behind him.

But is that because of somenew develpoment, or just because of his new powers? Surely if he's immune to "perfect happiness" cunsequencesm sun wouldn't be a problem

Zalos, Spike is the one who protected Dawn back when had no soul, and jacksquat reason to do it in season 5, all the way up till he was thrown off the tower and Buffy had to jump, so he's got a history of protecting Dawn. Spike is also not some spineless creep that would murder an innocent to save the world if thats where its going, he's got more class than that, I trust Spike with Dawn, and so would Xander. Spike is also not a big picture guy I think he would refuse to kill Dawn.

Yeah that's more Angels style :)
Lovely covers but I have to say I don't like seeing Angel there. Guess I'm kinda done with his character. I hope Dawn isn't the big bad but to be honest I don't really care, for me season 8 has been crap, I'm happy to see it end and I live in hope that season 9 will be the damage control season where a lot of this mess is undone. Actually maybe I do care about Dawn being the big bad because as much as I protested it, I did warm to Dawn and Xander as a couple. Xander's been the one saving grace of season 8 in general so I hope he at least gets a happy ending. Oh and that broken scythe is a pretty cool image. 🙂

I'm hoping nothing bad has happened to Spike. And Angel should be dust in that picture. Please, don't let him have shanshued. Not yet.

Of course he shoeshined....he killed a lot of people there's gotta be a reward for that :)
Wow, Chen's cover is gorgeous as always AND it really brings the season full circle (although we know the Scythe is well by Fray's time).
But I do like the Jeanty cover better for a couple of reasons. First, his artwork isn't nearly as shoddy as it usually is and the deeper meaning behind it. I think Dawn pretty much is a goner by this point. I really didn't want to believe it when I first saw the cover for #38. Although I don't see Angel shanshuing anytime soon, the breaking of Dawn (see what I did there? 😀) stands for a lot here (as Kean pointed out, Twilight is over and Dawn has been broken) and Angel being on fire would kind of ruin the melancholy it has going on.

My prediction:

Either Giles or Xander dead, and Willow gone forever.

Or at least, you know, until next season.

I'm not usually a fan of the comics, but these covers are fantastic! Definitely interesting that Angel isn't on fire, and that they all seem so sad. I just wish the art was a little nicer. I guess I just don't get these comics 🙁 Right over my pretty little head.

That top cover is just beautiful though, I'm definitely getting hold of a copy of that to get framed next to the original one.

I would be super happy to see the characters shown back as the scoobs for next season. I've always kinda thought that maybe Faith would be killed off, but looks like Dawn is biting the dust... Although, maybe not, it does seem a bit obvious, even to me, and we all know how much Joss loves his surprises!

Awww, Buffy looks so sad in the first one that it makes me cry 🙁 I love Buffy and her scythe (hence my avatar)!!!

EDIT: Throwing this out there. But for the second cover, maybe it's not in real-time. Maybe it's a dream sequence or there's some time-travel going on because it looks like the end of Chosen, with the Sunnydale sign. I don't know if I necessarily like that idea but just a thought.

Oh man, just saw another "Twilight" reference in the Buffyverse. "Breaking Dawn." This madness needs to stop, lol!

You know what? Come to think of it, the resemblance's on that second cover are pretty terrible... Giles looks like a 21 year old IT guy. And if it wasn't for hair, I honestly wouldn't be able to pick Willow and Buffy. They kinda look... Buck toothed or something...

Hahaha! I actually thought Giles looked so young he could be Faith's boyfriend 😉

Maybe he will be. If Wood is any sort of example, Faith's clearly developed a taste for older men.
Okay, in the group shot, the two people most obvious by their absence are Dawn and Spike, and in the other, Buffy is holding a badly damaged Scythe. How's this: Dawn is used as the focal point of all of the magic in the universe, destroying the Twilight universe, shoving the bad things back into their own playgrounds, and sealing the dimensional walls so that nothing similar can ever happen again. In order to allow time for Willow to make the spell work, Spike, the Slayer's Champion (eat your hearts out, Bangels, Angel just ain't got the juice for the job) has to buy time by pulling a "300 Spartans," probably with a few Slayer volunteers to help, against the assorted opposition. The spell is successful, but Key and Champion are both lost when the Scythe, like an overloaded surge suppressor, burns out. Or, even more likely, Angel somehow sabotages the whole thing, leaving Spike and Dawn on the wrong side of the closed dimensional portal, making him the Betrayer we've been warned about.

Being the one to betray the whole group, for the "greater good," of course, in order to save the universe that he, through his own actions, was at least partially responsible for putting in jeopardy in the first place, is exactly the sort of thing that Angel/Twilight would do. Plus, if in doing so, he manages to become a real live boy again, (no magic in the universe means no vampires, demons, evil witches OR Slayers) all well and good. Human Buffy and white picket fence tossed in as a bonus. It's got Season 8 Angel motivation written all over it, and would be a perfect example of what he would consider making restitution for all of the bad that Twilight is responsible for.

Season 9 could then focus on Spike and the others who are trapped on the other side trying to survive and get back home.`

Interesting :) I don't like Spuffy being separated though :(

If Angel kills Dawn he's done thats not restitution, its his fault Dawn's life is danger in th first pace

Damn i like your theory and it sounds really good. You should write a season 8 comic too. :)
