Covers for Issue 40 **Spoilers***

Very possible...but if Angel is the betrayer, why is he pictured with the group?

Because his betrayal will be looked at as being "for the greater good," the who lives, who dies decision that he's saving Buffy from having to make.
I'm so sad to see Angel on the cover, lol. And why are they wearing black? I assume that Dawn's dead. Poor Dawnie. :cry: 🙁 Oh, or Spike will just adopt Dawn and they leave the gang.

Chen's cover = masterpiece.
 
Is it just me or are everyone's clothes too black? I mean there is nearly no detail at all. It's almost solidly black. Makes me wonder if it is just there to hide something else. Although, I have no idea what that could be.
 
Or, interestingly enough, Buffy is the betrayer herself, betraying the last of her principles in killing Dawn herself to shove the magics back to the Hell dimensions and sealing the barriers, damaging the Scythe in the process, explaining why the blade and stake parts look different by Fray's time, and it being locked away.

Yeah, that could be, too, but that doesn't work Angel's "redemption" into the plot.

It looks that way because all of the blue highlights are missing. Without that, it's impossible to show any detail on flat black. They'll probably change it before publication.
 
Not sure if it's been said here but I saw it elsewhere:

Dawn and Spike are represented on the cover: Dawn - the rising sun, Spike - the Sunnydale sign.

It could be, the Sunnydale sign fell into the pit in Chosen, only to now mysteriously be standing again.
I got so excited when I saw these covers last night. Yet sad at the same time. I really hope Dawn makes it through this, I really want her and Xander to go through with their plans to move in together. #37 made me a Dander, can't help it. My theory on why Spike isn't on the cover is either because he's the betrayer or because the sun's out. I really doubt Joss would kill off one of his favorite characters. And I would quit the series if Spike died.

And the thing I'm most excited about is... Angel's in raw sunlight! I'm hoping he got Shanshued unlike some people here. Angel deserves to be shanshued after all the crap he's got put through over the years. My honest opinion. Maybe this will make up for the God-Awful #37

Dander has grown on me, too, in season 8.
This is from Buffy and Angel Wiki, which I know probably isn't a reliable source, but apparently Angel's immunity to sunlight is due to him and Buffy having sex.

During the events of Season Eight, Angel- in his new guise as Twilight- has demonstrated a significant increase in strength and power, along with an apparent immunity to sunlight and a permanent soul- based on him having sex with Buffy while flying during the daytime-; this is apparently a "superior" version of the Shanshu, with the higher power that informed Angel of his recent upgrade dismissing the Shanshu as nothing compared to what he has become.

They're all wearing black. Heading of to Dawnie's funeral? 🙁 And Angel is standing up straight in sunlight...? OhGod, I will tear my hair out if he has been shanshued. After everything he's done...

Jo Chen's cover is stunning, as always. Really going full circle here. Buffy doesn't just look beaten she so sad. Whoever the betrayer is will hit her hard.

Indeed it does. I'm hoping the sharp pointy end that's broken off is residing in Spike's chest somewhere 😛 I couldn't resist.

That first cover is just beautiful. I don't even read the comics and I'm hella intrigued. I wander into the discussion of the comics and I'm pleased to see Giles there cos I was thinking he might still be the betrayer. But I'm hoping this is a straight up, as-it-looks (a girl can dream, right?) cover and Giles is still my main man.
 
The first cover looks amazing.

The absence of Dawn and Spike on the second cover made me really sad. Spike sacrificed himself again to protect the world,Buffy and Dawn? Why is Angel still alive and more importantley not a pile of ash? Looks like he got whitewashed and Spike got f***** again?

Don´t tell me Spike or Dawn are the betrayers? 🙁

I highly doubt that Dawn is the betrayer. But I also fear that Dawn may be the one sacrificed.

As for why Angel would be out in the sun - it makes sense given this season. Remember, Angel has been in direct sunlight a couple of times this season - without burning up. So why should issue 40 be any different. Also I tend to doubt that Angel is Buffy's Betrayer.

Given the clues we've seen so far in season 8 - I would bet on either Willow, Giles or possible Spike being the Betrayer. In Willow's case (as seen in Time of Your Life) we know she goes dark against at some point. In Giles's case - he was actually looking for something that could take out Buffy -if she turned dark. And exactly what Spike has been up to is a mystery - so it's a question of if he's still Buffy's Allie or just pretending to be one.
 
As for Angel's supposedly new found immunity to sunlight, quite likely his new powers make him as immune to sunlight as they do losing his soul after "one moment of complete happiness." Also, haven't we seen Twilight cavorting around in broad daylight already several times this season? I seem to recall that being one of the arguments against Angel being Twilight in the first place. Angel was told in #36 that (his powers) make Shanshu look like a sack full of crap, so if the Shanshu would have made him non-flammable in sunlight, his Twilight powers would almost certainly do that and more (like give him a better hairstyle for starters)

When I mentioned that about Angel I was thinking that magic had been sucked out of this dimension and so that his powers should be nul and void.
 
We've seen other dimensions where Angel is immune to sunlight before, its possible that the Twilight suit is made from material from another dimension that negates sunlight, possibly even leaving residual protection on his skin for a while after taking it off, and possibly making him itchy as we saw.

That's true, but if all of the magic. demons, and supernatural power has been sucked out of the Buffyverse, (I'm assuming that that would include Willow, but she somehow managed to escape by Fray's time, possibly bringing a few vampires with her to repopulate the world with vampires/lurks, probably as the first part of a plan to bringing back all of the bad stuff) would Angel, as a true being, even exist anymore? Remember, the human who previously occupied that body was a drunken lout named Liam. Angel is primarily the demon who moved into that body when Liam died, tempered by a soul supplied by a bunch of vengeful Gypsies. So, will Angel be the single exception to the "Demons Begone" rule?

(This sounds like another one of those "Astronauts vs Cave Men" subjects.)

But we already know that the demon and the human host aren't completely separate. Spike being the biggest example of that, but we've seen it with Angel, and Vampire Willow.

In my personal opinion Angel and Liam are the same person, Angelus was Liam without a soul and he kept the name Angel after he got his soul back, cuz there was no going back to Liam.
 
According to Alluywn (sp?), already-called/activated Slayers and vampires will retain their powers. So, why wouldn't Angel just stay the way he is? Of course, that is if he and Spike are still vampires (I'm still confused about that "former vampire" thing re:Spike). I have no idea why they would retain their powers while others (witches) would lose theirs.
 
Because both Vampires and the essence of a Slayer are non-corporeal demons. They are living things, in their own way, not made up of magic but sheer physical and spiritual force. They have superhuman abilities and strength but not magic. Even Vampires can be mundane monsters or learn some magic for themselves later, but neither have anything specifically to do with it.
