Aright, since the biggest complaint about her character was that she was completely useless post s6, let's play the game "create a storyline for Dawn"!

(ps. I didn't really think she was pointless and I quite enjoyed her character, but I know I'm in minority here)

I'll think about my story and post it later!

Dawn unlocks her key powers, opens her own universe which is like heaven, everyone goes there, till they piss her off then she yells at them all to "Get out, get Out, GET OUT!"

😉

No I think they definitely should have made her a potential slayer, they should have continued the training session with Buffy, we should have had Buffy dealing with her sister entering the life she's had. I don't think she was pointless, but I don't think her "Im normal and I see stuff" was as big a statement as they thought it would be.

Omg I cracked up so hard at the first storyline, it would gave been quite interesting to see that I must way.

I was thinking, it would have been awesome if after Buffy died in the gift, Dawn would have became the next slayer, too bad that doesn't work since Faith is now the official slayer so no one was called. I think her becoming a slayer in season 6-7 would have also made a great storyline for Giles since he could have trained her the way he did with Buffy, and you know, Dawn would have actually been useful to the group! Plus it would have been hilarious to see the two sisters fight over who's the best slayer and Buffy constantly reminding Dawn that she was a slayer first.

I was always a bit disappointed that none of the major characters got vamped. THAT would have been a twist. Perhaps too cruel if it had been Dawn though. I liked it when they did it in Vampire Diaries

I'd be in favour of Dawn being more involved in S6 and 7, though I think she'd be better as a watcher.
But having both of them as a slayer, can you imagine the off screen repercussions? With Sarah praying that Joss never lets Michelle wear high heels.

I don't think that Dawn as a Slayer or a Potential would have been a good idea - it seems too predictable and the storylines coming from that would be a bit too much of a retread of what Buffy had already done.

I'm trying to think of something to do with Dawn, but it's going back to the end of Season 5 and turns more into rewriting what happens with all of the characters... In other words, fanfiction. And it's getting a little out of hand in my mind, so maybe I'll be back here later with my ideas.

I'd be very interested in hearing your ideas! Even if they are out of hands! haha
I would have liked to have seen Dawn's 'Key-ness' explored more. She was said to have too much power for it to just disappear, and I think it would have been great if she'd started developing powers she couldn't control.

I remember at the time 'The Body' aired, in the final scene, when Dawn reaches out to touch Joyce in the morgue, people expected Dawn's Key-powers to somehow wake Joyce up and bring her back from the dead. That would have been something interesting to explore, especially given Buffy's death at the end of that season.

I was also one of those who wanted Dawn to be a Potential. I don't agree with Mischlings that it would have been a rehash of Buffy's storyline. I can really see Buffy being too protective of Dawn to let her actually be a Slayer and I think she would have done everything she could to keep Dawn away from that life, up to and including lying to her. Dawn being Called in the Scythe Spell would have been interesting.

I have two ideas that I think would have improved Dawn. I liked her a lot, but as was said in the OP, she didn't have a whole lot to do in S's 6 and 7.

The first is I would have explored her connection to Buffy a bit more. I thought it was a little out of place at the end of S5 that Buffy suddenly deduced that Dawn was created from her and that that was automatically enough for Buffy to be the one to close Glory's portal. Don't get me wrong, it didn't bug me, but I thought they could have delved into it a bit more. I would have had, and there was a thread about this kicking around a few weeks back, it be revealed that Dawn isn't just from Buffy. When the monks created a human form for her, they took elements from both Buffy and Faith. I think that would have been a lot more interesting for Dawn to deal with, and have given Faith a big, ready-made arc when she eventually returns to the show.

The second is, as others have mentioned, I would have wanted to see Dawn's innate "key powers" expanded on. I know she was created for one very specific purpose at one very specific time, but I think it would have been cool to see her start developing dimensional powers in S7. Nothing too powerful, and nothing that could be used as a weapon, but more as something that could open doorways and things like that. They could have tied that into Buffy's invasion of the Hellmouth near the tail end of the series. That Dawn is the only one with the power to open it or something of that nature.

Both of those sound quite interesting and I'd like to see them explored in some way.
I've been trying to come up with something. I keep coming back to wanting her to become a type of half demon. Not vampire or werewolf but something like that but I can't think of anything specific. The transformation could happen while Buffy is dead and then when she comes back everyone tries to hide it for a while that Dawn has been transformed into some type of demon (nothing bad of course).

The key thing is probably the best storyline though. They could have made it into something great if she had developed some type of powers. But again, the key wasn't suppose to do much aside from opening something, heck it could have been a bicycle. If a bicycle could have played Dawn's part, I don't see them making to much of a good storyline with Dawn. The playing with dimensions could have been fun, where she would need to learn to control her power and until then she brings all sort of things into Buffy's world.

That's just the thing, though - the Key could NEVER have been a bicycle.

The ritual for 'activating' the Key and opening the portals was 'The blood flows, the gates will open. The gates will close when it flows no more.' Dawn's blood was ALWAYS going to be the key to the Key - pun intended - and a bicycle can't bleed.

Which is why I found it hard to believe that Dawn - an actual person with an active brain - didn't somehow stumble upon some of the power that's housed inside of her. It would be different if that power were contained within something organic but redundant - say for example a tree or a fruit, both of which can bleed, if you squint, lol - that can't think for itself or have the capacity for brain fucntion. But with Dawn, who is an intelligent being with knowledge that she isn't completely human, it amazes me that her brain didn't make the leap and come across that latent power. It just made sense to me that she might have been able to consciously funnel the energy from the Key that was inside her into some other form of power.

That is true, it did have to be living, my bad. *goes and hides in a hole*

On a side note your post made me think of how a cute puppy could have been the key, and then I thought you know what never mind, let's just get Dawn to bleed to death.

If Dawn was in the scene at the Magic Box with Dark Willow and got hurt enough to bleed, I would have like to see Dawn's blood drip on Willow and suck Willow into another dimension and then the task would be to find out where she went and bring her back. Maybe have a drop of her blood hit Willow and have Willow slowly fade to transparency while reducing her ability to do damage in this dimension. Then there would be a story arc of "where did she go?" followed by "how do we get her back?" Getting her back would involve a ritual bloodletting from Dawn to open a portal. Should be good for at least three episodes.

Yeah, a puppy could have been the Key, but then there wouldn't have been the emotional connection, you know? I mean, I am a dog person and I love my little puppy so much, but there's no way I would sacrifice any of my friends or family to save her if it came down to one or the other.

Which is why the stroyline worked so well for me (I know others disagree) because I wouldn't hesitate to beat down anyone who tried to kill my sister - even if it was for the greater good.

Actually, that might have been a good storyline as well - someone ACTUALLY trying to kill Dawn to stop the whole thing before it started and maybe even managing it. It would have been interesting for S6 to see Buffy's reaction to them.

I often wonder how S6 would have turned out if the original script hadn't needed to be rewritten. It was lost or stolen and leaked online, am I right?

As far as I can remember, the original script had Dawn sacrificing herself to close the portals instead of Buffy. I think Anya died as well.

Buffy's depression in S6 would have probably stemmed from the fact that she couldn't save her sister and felt that she was a failure as a Slayer.

huh! know where one could find a copy of this leaked script?
I definately would have liked to have seen Dawn's 'key' powers explored more...because it just seems to me that she was implemented as a plot device that had no use after the season 5 finale. I don't really believe the whole 'she sees things' speech they fed us in season 7 (even though I really loved the speech and it's a great moment for Xander) - Dawn doesn't really assist at all with anything. I really think the writers should have explored the whole idea of Buffy training her - I really liked Lessons - it felt like old Buffy was back.

This reminds me of a thought I had at the time: couldn't dawn have just pricked her finger and squeezed a drop of blood out (the blood flows) and then stuck a plaster on it (it flows no more)?

I know that would be quite painful...

I'm not sure that would have worked. 'Flows no more' seems pretty definite to me, meaning that the only way the ritual could be stopped was when Dawn - or Buffy, as it turned out - was dead.

TV shows are always the same - they always go for the hurt, lol.

The Chosen agrees: huh! know where one could find a copy of this leaked script?

I don't. I've never read it. I just read about it in one of those 'about Buffy' books that were written a while ago. The story behind the story or whatever.
