While watching the last ep of True Blood I found it interesting how different vampires from different series have shared, or different characteristics, so I thought if I listed the ones I could remember you could pick and choose, and create your own vampire.

I'm going to miss some, and get some wrong of course so feel free to ferociously correct me. Anne Rice, Forever Knight, Dark Shadows, and Stephanie Meyers vamps I don't know well enough to comment on.

Question marks mean I don't remember. An X means no.

The cross burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Underworld? Moonlight? Blade? True Blood X.

Holy water burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Underworld? Moonlight? Blade? True Blood X.

Silver kills - Dracula? Buffy vamps X, Underworld, Moonlight? Blade, True Blood (makes them sleepy).

Decapitation Kills - I can't thing of an exception to that rule.

Sunlight kills - Dracula? Buffy vamps (almost always), Underworld?, Moonlight (makes them sleepy), True Blood (Don't know, but they don't seem able to move in it), Blade (for all but day walkers).

Wood Staking works - Dracula (sometimes), Buffy (almost always), Underworld? Moonlight (I think so), True Blood, Blade?

They Dust - Dracula? Buffy Vamps, Underworld ? Moonlight X, True Blood X, Blade.

Shapeshifting Possible - Dracula, Buffy, Underworld X, Moonlight X, True Blood, Blade X.

Vampirism is a physical mutation - Dracula X, Buffy (not really), Underworld (kind of maybe), Moonlight, True Blood (kind of, mostly, maybe), Blade.

Vampirism is at least kind of Mystical - Dracula, Buffy Vamps, Underworld, Moonlight X, True Blood X, Blade X.

Artificial blood feed possible - Dracula X, Buffy Vamps X, Underworld X, Moonlight X, True Blood, Blade (for Blade at least, kind of).

Vamps will feed off hospital, or animal blood - Dracual X, Buffy Vamps, Underworld ? Moonlight, True Blood ? (but perhaps), Blade ?

Animal Vampires - None yet, I can think of, but it's only a matter of time.

i dont think crosses or holy water affected vamps at all in blade i'm pretty sure on that but may be wrong lolz. and as for a woodedn stake in blade thats intressting as i dont remeber any one saying they wouldn't kill a vamp but all of blades stakes were silver if i remember right?

and didn't a vamp were sun cream so he could be out in the sun for a short while in blade too? or am i imagening that/confusing it with something else?

tried to add twilight in, but other fans feel free to correct any of my wrongness 😀.

The cross burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Underworld? Moonlight? Blade? True Blood X, twilight?

Holy water burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Underworld? Moonlight? Blade? True Blood X, twilight?

Silver kills - Dracula? Buffy vamps X, Underworld, Moonlight? Blade, True Blood, twilight?

Decapitation Klls - I can't thing of an exception to that rule.

Sunlight kills - Dracula? Buffy vamps (almost always), Underworld?, Moonlight (makes them sleepy), True Blood (Don't know, but they don't seem able to move in it), Blade (for all but day walkers), twilight X.

Wood Staking works - Dracula (sometimes), Buffy (almost always), Underworld? Moonlight (I think so), True Blood, Blade?

They Dust - Dracula? Buffy Vamps, Underworld ? Moonlight X, True Blood X, Blade, twilight (well, there's a dead vamp who ended up as dust, but that couldve just been with time. someone else will have to help me out with this one 🙂).

Shapeshifting Possible - Dracula, Buffy, Underworld X, Moonlight X, True Blood, Blade X, twilight X,

Vampirism is a physical mutation - Dracula X, Buffy (not really), Underworld (kind of maybe), Moonlight, True Blood (kind of, mostly, maybe), Blade, twilight X (they're better looking and paler, but im not sure that counts as physical mutation).

Vampirism is at least kind of Mystical - Dracula, Buffy Vamps, Underworld, Moonlight X, True Blood X, Blade X, twilight,

Artificial blood feed possible - Dracula X, Buffy Vamps X, Underworld X, Moonlight X, True Blood, Blade (for Blade at least, kind of), twilight ?.

Vamps will feed off hospital, or animal blood - Dracual X, Buffy Vamps, Underworld ? Moonlight, True Blood ? (but perhaps), Blade ?, twilight

Animal Vampires - None yet, I can think of, but it's only a matter of time.

EDIT:

others things that might be interesting to think about is how the vamps can turn others into vamps, and superstrength, though i suppose that last one would be similar to "decapitation kills": none yet. hehe. maybe someday vampirism will be a super-strenthless blood-needing condition? 😛 or perhaps it is already. im mostly just familiar with buffy, dracula, and twilight.

Here's a some more I forgot.

Enter a home by invitation only - Dracula ? Buffy, Underworld X, Moonlight X, Blade X, True Blood.

Vampire hypnosis - Dracula, Buffy, Underworld ? Moonlight X, Blade ? True Blood.

Can't see their own reflection - Dracula ?, Buffy, Underworld ? Moonlight X, Blade X, True Blood X

Vampirism transmitted through shared blood - Dracula ? Buffy, Underworld ? Moonlight ? (but I think so), Blade X (just a bite), True Blood.

Older Vampires stronger - Dracula ? Buffy (I think so), Underworld, Moonlight ? Blade X, True Blood.

They grow back limbs in Blade, don't they? Buffy Vamps lose their soul. True Blood vamps reveal teeth more to the front than others. Angel vamps have a drug they share through humans. Lost Boy vamps can fly. Dracula vamps can change into mist I think, which would apply to Drac vamps in Buffy. Parkour has become a popular method of movement seen in Angel, Blade, Underworld, and Moonlight.

Okay, I'll fill in what I know...I don't know True Blood, Underworld, or Blade, but I do know the rest and Twilight. I'll cross out the ones that don't apply and italicize the ones I don't know.

The cross burns - Dracula, Buffy, Moonlight, Twilight.

Holy water burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Silver kills - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Decapitation Kills - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Sunlight kills - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight (but it's much more gradual), Twilight

Wood Staking works - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight (sort of...it paralyzes them, but doesn't kill), Twilight

They Dust - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Shapeshifting Possible - Dracula, Buffy (but only if they use magic), Moonlight, Twilight.

Vampirism is a physical mutation - I don't really know what you mean by this, to be honest.

Vampirism is at least kind of Mystical - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Artificial blood feed possible - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Vamps will feed off hospital, or animal blood - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Animal Vampires - None that I know of.

Enter a home by invitation only - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Can't see their own reflection - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight

Vampirism transmitted through shared blood - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Moonlight, Twilight (vampires have venomous saliva, so when they bite someone but don't completely drain them, they turn into a vampire.)

Older Vampires stronger - Dracula, Buffy, Moonlight (at least I think so), Twilight (younger vampires are stronger in Twilight.)

Hey, what about Anita Blake Vamps? Can't we list them?

'K, I'll do it! lol

The cross burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Underworld? Moonlight? Blade? True Blood X Anita Blake Vamps X

Holy water burns - Dracula, Buffy vamps, Underworld? Moonlight? Blade? True Blood X Anita Blake Vamps X (I think)

Silver kills - Dracula? Buffy vamps X, Underworld, Moonlight? Blade, True Blood (makes them sleepy) Anita Blake Vamps

Decapitation Kills - I can't thing of an exception to that rule. Anita Blake Vamps have to be staked through the heart and decapitated, if you really wanna make sure they're dead

Sunlight kills - Dracula? Buffy vamps (almost always), Underworld?, Moonlight (makes them sleepy), True Blood (Don't know, but they don't seem able to move in it), Blade (for all but day walkers) Anita Blake Vamps (Technically, the vampires 'die' at Sunrise, only to come back to life at night. Only the really powerful, or those personally connected to Anita can stay awake during daylight hours. e.g. Jean-Claude, Damien)

Wood Staking works - Dracula (sometimes), Buffy (almost always), Underworld? Moonlight (I think so), True Blood, Blade? Anita Blake Vamps X

They Dust - Dracula? Buffy Vamps, Underworld ? Moonlight X, True Blood X, Blade Anita Blake Vamps X

Shapeshifting Possible - Dracula, Buffy, Underworld X, Moonlight X, True Blood, Blade X Anita Blake Vamps X

Vampirism is a physical mutation - Dracula X, Buffy (not really), Underworld (kind of maybe), Moonlight, True Blood (kind of, mostly, maybe), Blade, Anitav Blake Vamps ?

Vampirism is at least kind of Mystical - Dracula, Buffy Vamps, Underworld, Moonlight X, True Blood X, Blade X Anita Blake Vamps

Vampire hypnosis - Dracula, Buffy, Underworld ? Moonlight X, Blade ? True Blood Anita Blake Vamps

Can't see their own reflection - Dracula ?, Buffy, Underworld ? Moonlight X, Blade X, True Blood X Anita Blake Vamps X

Vampirism transmitted through shared blood - Dracula ? Buffy, Underworld ? Moonlight ? (but I think so), Blade X (just a bite), True Blood Anita Blake Vamps X (it takes three seperate bites by the same vampire over a short period of time for someone to become a vampire)

Older Vampires stronger - Dracula ? Buffy (I think so), Underworld, Moonlight ? Blade X, True Blood, anita Blake Vamps

What I mean by "Vampirism is a physical mutation" is the physical laws of human science apply to a particular verse. For example if vampirism is seen as a virus spreading by bite that would apply. I think Blade (at least movie Blade), and Moonlight would fit in there. It's isn't mystic. There's no magic to it.

It's the difference between fantasy vamps, and science fiction vamps. I prefer fantasy vamps myself.

And how do Twilight vamps survive decapitation?

Well, in Anita Blake, vampires are legal citizens. They can own businesses, drive cars, go to the movies, etc. They're just dead when they're doing it. I don't think they're considered a plague on humanity, just by the Humans First group who want all vampires dead.

True Blood's a little like that too.
And how do Twilight vamps survive decapitation?

They have to be ripped apart by another vampire or werewolf (because their skin is like granite and human weapons aren't strong enough to hurt them), then the pieces all have to be burned before they can rebuild themselves. Yes, I'm aware of how ridiculous Stephenie Meyer's vampire lore is (although the whole "sparkling in the sun" thing gets points for originality).

Anita Blake Vampires have to be staked through the heart/shot in the heart, and decapitated, and then the remains have to scattered over running water, like a river. Only if you wanna REALLY make sure they're dead, otherwise, you just, and I quote Anita, 'keep shoting until you see daylight'

i read about this in various places, i think each movie, book, show whatever needs to set up its own rules.

but i always wonder if making a cross with your fingers would work? (i think Eddie Izzard mentioned this once in a show, i dunno but ive always wondered it)

In Underworld they were retrovirally infected Humans, not the supernatural folkloric kind of Vampires, it isn't entirely fair to compare them to Demonic ones.

* Need no invitation to enter a building.

* Heart beats, body heat, blood flows, brain and spine function through normal nerve impulses. Damage to the body can be as severe as possible but does not seem to kill them unless the head is removed or the body dismembered fully.

* They can reproduce with themselves, with Lycans and with Humans freely. Lucian and Sonya conceived a child naturally.

* Sunlight boils the water/plasma of their virally altered blood until it causes third degree burns or even full body wide boiling/cooking.

* Silver causes allergic reaction but doesn't kill them. Lycans however suffer a system wide extreme allergic reaction that kills them by shutting down their organs.

* Reflections just like Humans in all reflective surfaces.

* Several sundry and secondary characters wear religious items and a Crucifix without injury. Several of their safe houses are near Churches. The film opens with Selene in the bell tower of a Cathedral, no effect on them whatsoever.

* Carry their memories genetically encoded on a different blood cell similar to Klingon pink blood cells.

* Real food is lethal to them, causes their digestive system to regurgitate the food violently in a manner that causes a seizure that could lead to shock and death.

Oh and as for the beheading? In Saga of the Noble Dead Book 3, Chane is beheaded by a mystical blade by a Vampire hunter. His head is taken clean off and the wound mystically "Burned" to prevent regeneration.

But due to another Vampire placing the head back on a bathing the neck in blood for days, the head reattaches and apart from a faint scar and a softer voice the Vampire is fine.

Boards loading far too slow to wait for the edit function lol.

Vampire looking like and acting like Humans at all - 1800's "The Vampyr", "Varney", "Carmilla" and "Dracula". Before this since 4000 B.C. Babylonian murals Vampires were walking rotting corpses.

The Mirror Thing - Dracula 1897, before this they had reflections

Sunlight kills them - 1922 Nosferatu, before this according to legend it didn't

Dusting - 1958 Hammer Horror, a chance to show off stop-motion effects. 1997 Buffy, the network objected to having bodies lying around and wanted a 'clean' way for them to die.

In Carmilla. During the day she is staked using a huge stake, decapitated while its still impaling her, set on fire, reduced to ash, scattered to a large fast flowing river. She turns up again that night without a scratch.

I liked that twist Buffy writers did with the stake through the heart thing concerning Kakistos. Staking didn't work at first. He said they needed a bigger stake. Was that it, or did the heart shrink with age. If so the same thing might apply to The Master, and possibly Dracula. It offers a cool little background detail explaining their stakings. Then there's the hardened plate protecting the Uber-vamp. Perhaps the shrunken heart through age could be added to that as a fanwank to explain why it was tougher to off it than the other Turok-han Buffy and the others stake easily later.

One thing I noticed about that initial Turok Han, is the First Evil's choice of a singular Vampire.

It chose that Turok Han to be its only other Emissary besides Caleb. Its possible the First imbued the Vampire with its essence to make if stronger even than other Turok Han, making it so hard to kill.

Abandoning that idea, imbuing Caleb with its power instead, and making the Turok Han attack mainly in numbers could have been a result of Buffy killing what it thought would be something strong enough to take care of them.

Yes, and if you put the old "It's a special-ube" fanwank together with the supportable, smaller heart in older vampires ones it has even greater logic kung-fu, and the contradiction of a super-ube in the beginning of season 7 and vulnerable Turok Han at the end begins to make sense.

Yup, most Vampires now are "half breeds" which is to say Humans saturated with diluted Vampiric blood that alters the body only partly when the Demon inhabits.

The Turok Han are the pure Vampires the infection came from, as such their organ system could be very different from ours. Like the Vulcan heart being closer to their Liver, the Turok Han may have its heart in a slightly different place.

Add thick leathery skin, hardened ribs, very dense muscle, a thicker lungs perhaps? then a different heart, I could see there being a problem hitting it right.

It's also interesting if you go by vamps like The Master, Kakistos, and The Prince of Lies the older a vampire gets the more it appears to regress to a Turok Hannish physical state. This could possibly give them the thick bone plate covering the heart Anya and Andrew lecture the potentials about in Season 7.

The Master did start to resemble a Turok Han but Kakistos was heading towards looking like a goat and the Prince of Lies was turning out more like Nosferatu (he did seem to be neglecting his own health and appearance an awful lot though).

I wonder if the original prototype from the creative side wasn't Nosferatu in all those cases. In any case there appears to be a suggestion with Buffyverse vamps they mutate with age.
