I'm working a videoshop in Ireland, we also have computers in the shops forinternet access for the public.

Last week I saw a creepy looking guy on the computer was in a Teen chat room, I thought it was odd so took a pic of him with my phone (God bless the camera phone) to show the manager,just to look out for him.

Anyway, he came in today, asking for a computer so I put him on a computer right nextto the manager (She was just on a computer after work) But he turned away the screen so she couldn't see what was on it, but we also found out he had a Bebo page (Something thats used by allot of Teens in Ireland). We were trying to find a way to find out what he was looking at and taling about,so I kept walking past, and cleaning around him and noticed he was private chatting with someone in the Teen Chat room, through the chat room web site and talking to others on MSN , and the only line I saw was a reply to him from whoever he was talking to which said:

"About as big as your *****"

You could prob guess what I assume the last word is, I also noted the web address and looked at it from the computer on the opp side of the table, so he couldn't see me. It was a chat room for Teen between 16-19, anyone found over this age limit could be punished by law!

I also Turned off the computer so he couldn't wipe the private data, and then acted like I didn't know what happened, and the comp must be broken. So When I turned it back on later and wen't back into Firefox, it gave me the option to "restart session" which opened up everything he was looking at.

Confiming for us that he was in a teen chat room, and his Bebo was logged out but his username was still in the sign in box, so I logged in as me and searched for him.

His page was really odd for a 40 year old. With the Pussycat dolls as his skin, and the song Umbrella in his flashbox! All his friends where girls between the age of 16-19. His age was not displayed, and he had comments on his page like "Why did you add me on MSN I don't know you" "Why are you comming on to me, I don't know you" And he'd left comments on these girls sites saying thigs like "I need some loving" "I'm just a cutie looking for some love"

The kicker to this story is we rang the guards who told us they couldn't do anything until he did something! Isn't that such a joke, It's like they can't act on it until he does something really bad!!

If the guards wont do anything, I think the next time he comes in I'll leave him to logg into everything, then sit right next to him look at the screen and comment on what he's looking at, tell him I'll ring the guards and I have his car reg no. (which I do) Just try and creep him out!

Second of all...I'm really proud of you for figuring all of that out.

It's just a shame that there are people like that out there...how could they live with themselves? That's wrong, perverted...and yeah...

I feel bad for those girls. You should leave a comment on his Bebo something like, "I know who you actually are."

It'd probably scare the sh** outta him.
 
ok, scared now. my sister and i both have a Bebo, my sister is around that age, and we're in Northern Ireland. yep, definitely scared.

it really freaks me out to hear about some of the things people get off on. pretending that you're a teenager when you're actually in your 40's? how sick or twisted does a person have to be?

have you tried logging into that teen website and contacting the moderators?
 
In Australia, we have cops posing as teenage girls online to catch those sorts of creeps...and they DO get caught and charged and stuff.

I think there was this huge thing when they first started doing this as to whether or not it was ethical...but at least they are trying to do something about it.

I'm kinda glad that I really wasn't a net person until I was about 17...there's a lot of crazy people out there. I can't imagine what it would be like for a 13 year old or even younger.

too bad all my smarts are street smarts and not smart smarts...otherwise i'd maybe have a better job instead of the sucky one i have now.

Yeah I will do that eventually, aswell as leaving one saying he's 40! I'm leaving the job in 2 weeks anyway!

I logged in, and was watching messages, but I just have to find out his username in there, before I can report him!

See I was thinking of that, make a fake bebo, get him to invite, let the guards know and have him arrested, but would that actually be allowed? The guards are gonna call my manager back with more info on what they can and can't do!

I think that maybe they need to be caught trying to meet with them or exchanging photos or something before they get arrested here but I'm not 100%.

If they're not going to do anything I would probably just try and keep record of all this activities and then totally shame them so hopefully they won't do it again...but that doesn't really solve the problem, does it?
 
It's a shame that the police can't do anything but I guess that arresting people before they commit a crime would be the start of a fascistic police state (or a film featuring Tom Cruise 🙂).
If the site is for over-16s though, it wouldn't technically be an offence would it...despite it being very disturbing behaviour for a 40 year old.
I'm pretty sure grooming has been made a criminal offence in the UK but I think it would only apply to under 16s.
 
WOW! Great Britain is waaayy behind. Here in Canada we have a police division that goes into these chat rooms to trap these pervs. They even have a program to alert them when the perv is trying trap the cops to weed them out!
If the perv arranges a meeting with who he thinks is a teen when he shows up for his date he gets some real cool jewelery...handcuffs!
We also have a cyber division that trys to identify the location of where these whack jobs do their kiddie porn stuff to help other countries. The Toronto division helped bust a kiddie porn ring in Spain last year after noticing where the light switch was located on the wall, the keyboard, blanket around the kid and a piece of paper the kid was holding (a train ticket). The Toronto cops contacted the Spanish cops and they found the place.
IMO to hell with their civil rights...hurt a kid go to jail!
 
Totally with you teentitan. Why would anyone want to harm or damage our future? It's definitely not right.
 
Couldn't you inform Bebo and the chat site thing about who he really is (the pics may help prove it) and what he is doing.

If there could be some way to find out his password (or maybe 'accidentially' switch off the computer a minute or two before his time is up so maybe when you boot it up again hes still logged in on bebo) and delete his account.

Or at least contact all the girls hes trying to talk to and again, inform them of who he really is.

Do internet cafes have a log of browser usage. So you could say "User X looked at these sites. User X is a 40 year old male, we have a copy of his...whatever" (do you get proof of ID or is it purely debit cards. Although surely if you do have a debit card and this thing got 'bigger' (as so to speak) that should be sufficient. Banks should be able to say "Yes Mr X was born in 1962" or whatever.
 
that is so freakin creepy! some people are just disgusting. i'm so glad i'm not around those kids' ages anymore.
 
ARGH THAT IS SO DISGUSTING. some people are retarted in the head. CREEEPY. i would tell bebo.. seriously.. he probaly has a msn and myspace as welll.. and goes into those chat sites and gets them to add him on msn or aim. and he could some how get them to meet with him... that sorta thing happens.. i swear thats so creepy and sick argh sekghisdoghw. :S
 
it's a shame that Pretending to be a teen when your well over fourty and groom youngsters isn't deemed an arrestble affense!

How dim is the law here!

Too bad you didn't have something like Dateline there. Have you seen those programs where they set up a sting for the predator at a house, where they catch them on camera, and watch them squirm as they interview them? The cops pick them up as they walk out the door. So luring underage internet users is a crime in America, and Canada.

Can you see someones profile without having an account on this bebo thing? If so, lets have a look.

Also, what is it that this guy is doing? Pretending to be a teenager so that he can talk to other teenagers? You don't actually know that he is trying to get young girls(or boys) to meet him. And even if he was, they're of legal age right? So even if you caught him out for doing this, you're not actually catching him doing anything legally wrong.. just morally(depending on your own view of what is moral and such)

What you need to do is, get someone talking to him who pretends to be 15. And see if he tries to get them to meet him. I'd totally do it. Pretend to be a 15 year old girl. I could totally pull it off....though maybe that's what he'd be doing too!!

By the way, Detective Beg, what was it about him that you found creepy?
 
I guess I'm old and nerdy enough to have frequented the Buffy Yahoo chatrooms back in the heyday. I learned very quickly that the only way to not get hassled by lots of very, very creepy people was to pretend I was 22 when I was 14.

At the very least, it's a useful reminder: Bebo is no more secure than any other site. Don't put any details on it that you wouldn't want a very, very creepy person to have.
