Crush - Buffy's reaction to the discussion about Spike

In terms of Buffys interest. It really only starts in Intervention where she kisses him. Up until that point its all 1 way from Spike only, which they get around by using dream sequences etc.

Its only in Intervention with this kiss rather than simply thanking him that interpretation could be implied.
I guess the scene in Harsh Light of Day where they encounter each others partners and the look Buffy gives in IWMTLY both of which are Espenson episodes would count as she was a Spuffy shipper

She should've written her own fan fiction, rather than projecting onto the series. Thanking him was enough. That kiss was horrid and stupid, especially right after telling Spike the robot he made of her was "gross".

Espenson is the worst. Let her shipping proclivities throw weird Spike Love beats from out of nowhere (literally) into episodes at strange moments. See the scenes in Intervention & HLOD & IWMTLY among others. She never set them up, and, unless you are a Spike worshiper like her, they don't make any sense.

Its not just Spuffy, look at Xander in Earshot. Hes desperately searching for a high school shooter then stops to stuff his face with jelly. Its obvious she wanted a comedy scene and didn't care that its placement was not appropriate

I would argue that Buffy shows no interest in Spike at all until after her resurrection.

Her acts before resurrection appear to be Spike worshiper fantasy inserts from Jane Espenson and other writers because they are never followed up in any way. And, after every supposedly Spuffy moment, Buffy goes back to dumping on Spike.

Otherwise it is Buffy needing dumb muscle (literally) to protect Joyce & Dawn. Even in the "Spuffy" ep's at the end of S5, Buffy isn't into Spike. The supposedly greatest "Spuffy" moment is when Buffy re-invites Spike back into her home after he electrocuted, chained, threatened & unleashed Dru on her in Crush. It isn't even really a "moment". It is Buffy needing dumb muscle to carry weapons back to The Magic Box.

Whedon and the Suits were not into Spuffy. They were into the ratings that teasing Spuffy created. Just like Cheers & Moonlighting, an unconsumated relationship could make parts of the audience absolutely crazy and keep them coming back for more, and, most importantly, bring some friends along for the ride.

In reality, Buffy was a low budget, low ratings, critical darling with a hard core of absolutely fanatical viewers. The definition of a "cult" hit. Whedon and the Suits at the Studio and Netlet were willing to promote pretty much anything to boost the ratings, and, thus, their paychecks.
