As we all know, Spike chained up Buffy in "Crush" in his warped way of declaring his love for her and trying to get her to give him a crumb. I thought this was major freaky. But my real question is, did this remind anyone of Phantom of the Opera? Where Eric (the Phantom) chains Raoul up, and tries to get Christine to stay with him in exchange for Raoul's life? And in the end, he lets them both go when the mob comes to get him.

The thing is, Christine chose The phantom over Raul to save Raul's life because she loved him. Dru meant nothing to Buffy. The only parallel I really see is that they were both chained up and they consisted of three people. Christine was given the choice to either stay with PTO and have Raul go free, or go free herself and let Raul be hanged. Buffy didn't have to make such a heartbreaking decision. She only had to listen to Spike's ramblings, and almost get killed by Dru.

Yeah, I know--and I don't think the writers were going for that either--but I just meant in the setup of the scene itself, not so much the content. Especially how Spike/Phantom lets Buffy/Christine go in the end. Not so much a deep sort of thing, just gave me a sense of deja vu, so I wondered if anyone else thought that, however vaguely.
