Since the original Buffy movie is classified as a Clt Movie, I was just wondering what other cult movies we have seen and loved. One of my favorites has always been "Buckaroo Banzai" but I'm sure there are other favorites out there.
 
One of my favourites has always been Dark Star...John Carpenter's low-budget debut feature. Hilarious sci-fi comedy...

If you liked "Dark Star," you should look up "Silent Running" sometime. Almost the entire movie is Bruce Dern and a couple of R2-D2 type robots on this huge space station housing all that was left of Earth's forests. Strange movie, but fun to watch

I loved Silent Running as well...Huey, Dewey and Louie :)
I liked Buckaroo Banzai. It was the first time I ever heard what has become the old saying "No matter where you go, there you are". Someone should do a Buckaroo Banzai 2.

My favorite cult film is Strange Days.
 
Strange Days - good one, I guess it's really campy but I'm still all about The Evil Dead - and Evil Dead 2 more than the original and Army of Darkness.

Recently saw the play...awesome
 
One of my fave cult films is the underrated Phantom Of The Paradise (1974)...a musical, rock opera sendup of the '70's glam rock era, much in the vein of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
It's a shame it didn't get it's due back in the day, because it's damned entertaining. Only in recent years has this little gem seen new life on cable and home media.

A Clockwork Orange and Escape from New York. Both sci-fi you'll notice. Clockwork is a bit much too handle, but it's absolutely brilliant. Escape from N.Y. is very fun, Snake Plissken is one great anti-hero.

I can't believe that there is a remake of Escape From New York and they haven't even asked Kurt Russell to make a cameo. In the words of Graig Ferguson "That's just bullshit!"
 
I thought of googling it, but then I thought that's no fun. Better to give an impresssion of what I think the definition is, and risk being wrong. First of all I think of them as not being financially successful, but with a group of fans who refuse not to love it in spite of that, or at least appreciate some aspect of it in a fannish way which says "Hey there's something special here that's worth remembering". Even Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and Plan 9 from Outer Space are considered cult films. The bad movie cultists love those.

Then you have what they call cult classics, like Serenity. :cheering:
 
Halloween = was produced on a really small budget, so much that they had to refuse leaves in scenes. BUT! everyone knows that background music.

You beat me to it, hehe. I reckon Serenity will always be one of the greatest cult movies of all time.

For rockers like me one of the best cult movies ever made is Singles, if only for the fact that Pearl Jam star in it. I'd recommend anyone checking that movie out. Brilliant stuff.

Right up there with "Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes" are a couple of my favorites, "The Killer Shrews" and one Anya would find especially terrifying, "The Night Of The Lepus" about an attack on mankind by a herd of giant irradiated RABBITS.

Ron Ely made what really SHOULD HAVE BEEN the greatest cult classic of all times, "Doc Savage" about a 1930's pulp hero of the same name. Doc was a direct ancestor of not just Mr B Banzai, but also our favorite Man of Steel himself Doc was the "Man of Bronze" and he had a Fortress of Solitude" long before Superman ever thought of it. If you love hokey movies, you'll absolutely love Doc and his crew.
 
Terminator was a cult movie that spawned a sequel (the third one does not count) and now a tv series.
A cult movie to me is a movie that does not do well in theatres but late night tv movies, then VCR rental and now DVD rental makes them financially profitable to do sequels etc.
I remember my first cult movie Tommy.

A 25th Anniversary Ed. was supposed to be released early this year, but I haven't seen it yet! I'm waiting, it's supposed to have 4 different cuts of the film, plus extras!

My favorites are Nikita, Dune, Blade Runner (altho it might not actually qualify), Serenity, Highway, Donnie Darko.....and I can't even begin to say how much I love A Clockwork Orange.

Blade Runner definitely qualifies. It was another tanked in the theatre but made gobs of cash on rentals. Didn't they just release an anniversary edition?

Usually when I hear people talking about cult movies they're talking about something that's Genre-ish, but I wonder, would movies like High Fidelity, or Dick apply?

I used to think of cult as being a genre thing too, N4H. Over the years though I've heard of many non-genre movies being described as being cult so I've started to assume that it's any movie that has a small but vocal and highly passionate fan base. It's just that a lot of these do still tend to be genre based.
 
Dick might not apply anyway, though, because I think I'm the only person I ever met who loves that show. Can you have a cult of 1? 🙂
 
Yeah it's pretty hard to define cult movie though.. If A Clockwork Orange counts I'm right there.. Also I'd count The Breakfast Club as well as Heathers (two high school movies I love).. Rocky Horror's pretty awesome.. I don't know which else would count though..

The Breakfast Club was on TV not too long ago and it had been SO long since I'd seen it!!! At one time, I could quote that movie verbatim. They chopped it up a little, added some scenes that weren't in the theatrical release, and rescored it with some horrible, cheesy crap...but it was still a great movie.

"Just answer the question!" "NO! I NEVER DID IT!"
