Cult Movies

Some of the tiles mentioned (Dune, Blade Runner, Serenity, Donnie Darko, Clockwork Orange,...) would not make my definition of a cult movie. For me cult movies are non-mainstream films that usually don't garner much critical aclaim (at least not at first) but gain a loyal following among some small group of movie watchers.

Here's my list of favorite cult films:

1. Repo Man (1984)
Emilio Estevez plays a repo man. Weird mix of punk, sci-fi and weird humor.

2. Surf Nazis Must Die (1987)
It's about a group of surf nazis who try to take over the local beaches after the police leave the area due to some natural disaster. The surfers battle it out while the mom of one of the boys who is killed goes after Adolf and his gang. Sort of a crap movie but cool nonetheless.

3. Bad Taste (1989)
An intergalactic fast food chain comes to earth in search of a new flavor (guess what it is?). Awesome gore comedy.

4. Naked Lunch (1991)
From IMDB: "After developing an addiction to the substance he uses to kill bugs, an exterminator accidentally murders his wife and becomes involved in a secret government plot being orchestrated by giant bugs in an Islamic port town in Africa." (Don't know if this qualifies as cult, but I'm including it anyway).

Those came to mind...

I love Terminator, too. It's a very dark, violent movie full of ideas.
The Fifth Element is great, a visual treat. And could you not love the outfits?
Does La Femme Nikita count? Nikita murders a cop but can't murder people for her government. Very conflicty.

Definition of a cult movie

1. prompt people to go around it to each other or inspire an unreasonable amount of devotion long after the masses have forgetten it's existence
2. be good but underappreciated, possibily because in a market driven by stars and event movies, they were just too different to have a long run at a cinema near you
3. be an undiscovered gem possibly becauseit's foreign or went straight to video
4. be so bad it's a hoot
5. be compelling for some other reason--the script may stink, but there's a song, stunt or scene that makes it all worthwhile
6. be a mainstream film which has that indefinable something we call "juice"

I actually stole this from The Rough Guide to Cult Movies. Very good book.

what about The Faculty? would that be a cult movie? i love that movie so much. definitely one of my top 10 movies.
Serenity, too, obvisously. 😀

How 'bout Logan's Run, Cube, Clerks/Mallrats/Dogma/Jay and Silent Bob, Reservoir Dogs, Blue Velvet, Trainspotting, Excalibre, or any of at least half a dozen Jacky Chan movies including Police Story I & II, Project A I & II, Dragon's Forever?

While I'm at it, I have to nominate The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, and Bullet in the Head as John Woo at his best and Hard Boiled for more in the Chow Yun-Fat oeuvre. Maybe very successful/mainstream in Hong Kong, but definitely cult status in the West.

I'd also like to mention Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, The Usual Suspects and Fight Club, but I'm not sure that they qualify as cult movies.

Oh! I almost forgot The Boondock Saints. Sensational!!!

[Fire alarm goes off, all three cock their weapons, II Duce jumps behind Yakavetta and puts his shotgun to his head. Conner and Murphy jump onto tables]
Connor: Now you will receive us.
Murphy: We do not ask for your poor, or your hungry.
Connor: We do not want your tired and sick.
Murphy: It is your corrupt we claim.
Connor: It is your evil that will be sought by us.
Murphy: With every breath we shall hunt them down.
Connor: Each day, we will spill their blood till it rains down from the skies.
Murphy: Do not kill, do not rape, do not steal, these are principles that every man of every faith can embrace.
Connor: These are not polite suggestions, these are codes of behavior and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost.
Murphy: There are varying degrees of evil, we urge you lesser forms of filth not to push the bounds and cross over, into true corruption, into our domain.
Connor: For if you do, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three. And on that day, you will reap it.
Murphy: And we will send you to whatever god you wish.
[Murphy and Conner join II Duce behind Yakavetta]
Connor, Murphy, Il Duce: And shepherds we shall be, For thee my lord for thee. Power has descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy commands. So we shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be.
Il Duce: In nomine Patri
Connor: Et Fili
Murphy: Spiritus Sancti
[they execute Yakavetta]

[after Rocco accidently kills his girlfriend's cat]
Connor: Donna's gonna be angry about her cat.
Rocco: F**k, she's on every drug known to man. She'd have sold the thing for a dime-bag. Screw her.
[laughs]
Rocco: I do kinda feel like an a$$hole, though.
Connor: Yeah, Roc, you sound real remorseful there.

Rocco: I killed your cat, you druggie b!tch.
Donna: What? Why?
Rocco: I thought it would bring closure to our relationship.
Donna: You killed my... my...
Rocco: [putting a gun to his head] Your what? I'll shoot myself in the head if you can tell me that f**king cat's name! Your what? Your precious, little...
Donna: Skippy! Skippy!
Rocco: Aw, Jesus! What color was it, b!tch?

Connor: We haven't really got a system of deciding who, Roc. It's just...
Rocco: Me! *Me*! I'm the guy! I know everyone! Their habits, who they hang out with, who they talk to! I've got phone numbers, addresses! I know who they're f**king! I know where they *live*! We could kill *everyone.*
Murphy: So what do you think?
Connor: I'm strangely comfortable with it.

Rocco: Anybody *you* think is evil?
Connor: Aye.
Rocco: Don't you think that's a little weird, a little psycho?
Connor: You know what I think is psycho, Roc? It's decent men with loving families. They come home every day after work and they turn on the news. You know what they see? They see rapists, and murderers and child molesters. They're all getting out of prison.
Murphy: Mafiosos. Getting caught with twenty kilos. Getting out on bail the same f**king day.
Connor: And everywhere, everyone thinks the same thing: that someone should just go kill those motherf**kers.
Murphy: Kill 'em all. Admit it. Even you've thought about it.
Rocco: You guys should be in every major city. This is some heavy s#!t. This is, like, Lone Ranger heavy, man.

Rocco: Shut your fat a$$, Rayvie! I can't buy a pack of smokes without runnin' into nine guys you've f**ked!
