Most people have worked in some form of shop at some stage in their life, and you come into contact with a good few weirdoes! Well got any really odd people, tell us, I find weird customers so funny!

I just started a job, and had my first freaky person pointed out to me today. He's a little Chinese menu, who comes in to use the computers and go on the internet. He requests 2 computers, but only uses one. And the really weird thing, There are a selection of menus around the counter, he always asks for the Menu for the local Chinese, and he opens it up and sits on it... He won't sit on the chair unless he is sitting on the Chinese menu!

Another one is less freaky but gross, One guy came in and used the computers to look up sites that I would not be appropriate for this Family Friendly Board - And the computers are open where everyone can see what you are looking at, he didn't seem to mind looking at this in public, but where it gets really gross is when he decided to... em... pleases himself while watching... !!!

People are so weird!

Umm call the cops maybe?
Oh ew. I had to work at a pumpkin patch once, and there was this guy who paid me $50 for a pumpkin worth $2. Not much, but it was weird.

I think Customers are there to test your temper talking from experience my first job was working in a shop and let me tell you the number of times they twisted a sit. to get me in troublwe i lost count.PLus if they bothered me i said so!

Shopwork, eh? Oh I've got whines about that... For those of you not quite as obsessed with me as I am, I work in the computer game/ electronics end of a large toyshop. I have Sunday off this week, and I think I'll use it to plant a bomb at Apple headquarters. I'll tell you why.

Today I had a woman scream abuse at me because American PSPs aren't under European warranties. I had to phone fifty people or more to tell them the Pink PS2 is delayed, several of whom were almost equally abusive. I served junkies who were literally foaming at the mouth. I had to pricecheck forty five new items in three rival shops discreetly enough not to get kicked out by their security. I had to serve three of our eight Crazy Regulars (tm). I had to clear up several newbie messes because they all hate our manager so much they won't ask her. I found out the guy who spent last Christmas sexually harrassing every single member of staff has gotten his job back this Christmas and starts back next week. I wasn't paid for last week due to a clerical error, and have sixty euro to live off for the next seven days. This Thursday we start opening until eleven at night, which means fourteen hour shifts at least once a week until Christmas.

I can honestly say, Apple iPods easily still trump as the single most frustrating element of my work week. They make my job suck single handedly, even though I don't actually sell all that many of them. Every single step of dealing with them, from the actual selling of the iPod to it's inevitable return, is an ordeal. There is nothing that isn't unnecessarily complicated or infuriatingly pointless or otherwise spectacularly ill-conceived.

Why Apple are Satan:

1. Apple offered an online training course for till monkeys like me. First person to complete the course in every store won a Nano. Except the website doesn't work.

2. So we were instructed by a rep to send them an email to resolve this, and did. Three months ago. No response.

3. We did, however, get a snotty letter telling us they'd sanction us if we didn't complete the training. The training they won't let us do.

4. The new Nano doesn't come with the software you need to use it on your computer because... they wanted the box to look cute. So they just didn't bother packaging any software with it. You have to download it, and to do so you need Broadband. There are third world countries with more Broadband access than Ireland. Most of the nanos I sell are gifts bought by the technologically illiterate or the elderly. They don't even know what Broadband is, and Apple's return policy is so dementedly obtuse they can't bring it back if they find out they don't have it. See below.

5. So we give out home-made software discs on CD-Rs, which sort of defeats the purpose of the aesthetics of the box. So finally you have a working iPod, but then you're stuck with iTunes. Which is in many ways worse than having nothing, because it gleefully eats up your computer's IQ and leaves it running like Bovril.

6. The Apple iPod 30gb is a total Jonah. Three hundred and thirty euro, and about 1 in 3, maybe 1 in 4, need to be repaired or replaced. If the battery doesn't fail, in which case you can't replace it yourself of course, the screen just freezes and tells you to check Apple's support website...

7. ...Which doesn't work either.

8. Our return policy used to work thus: Every broken iPod - of which there was plenty - needed to be tested and put through a reset procedure, which takes f*cking ages. Then we had to obtain a case number for it from Apple so we could return it. We rang Apple, or rather the New Delhi Apple call centre, they'd put us on hold for between thirty minutes to an hour and a half while an angry, angry customer and a murderous queue glowered at us across the counter. Then we'd get talking to the Apple rep. Either, bizarrely, a baffled Scottish guy who had no idea what we were talking about ("Case ID number?") and somehow never sounded any less baffled, or a New Delhi dude who seemed to understand what we were saying but couldn't speak English well enough to respond. Eventually, we might get a Case ID number. Then we have to fill in a few more forms and send the iPod away. Four hundred years later, we get the iPod sent back to us and we pass it on to the customer. Or not, if they took a dislike to the way we filled in forms or decided the iPod wasn't as broken as it should be, they'd just fling it back at us. We had to do this about three or four times a day. Once, we actually met an Apple rep and almost murdered the unfortunate wretch, so a new return procedure was devised.

9. Our new return policy goes thus: We log on to the Apple Support network, using the user ID we were supposed to get when we signed up for the Training we can't do, and then fill out the forms online. This is even more complicated than the phone system. So we got hold of an ID. Except the website doesn't work. Surprise!

10. So we just... can't return iPods. We're one of the biggest suppliers of iPods in Dublin, and we have no way of returning an iPod or even just getting one repaired.

Apple are simply uncontactable. Customers hate me because I sold them this unreturnable sh*tbox in the first place. And I, in turn, hate Apple.

I hate the company. I hate their products. I hate the people who design for them, and I hate the people who promote them, and in fact, I hate anyone else who works for them right down the line. I hate them.

Individually, and profoundly, and in a very real way, I hate everybody who works for Apple. I hate every one of them, because they are complicit. There is too much wrong with this company for it to be the responsibility of a single person, or even a group of people. It's all of them. They are all responsible, and so I hate them all. When the reckoning comes, it will not be enough to say they were only doing their job. It will not suffice as excuse nor explanation, and even were they repentant, their failure to act would be damning in itself.

I hate their parents for raising them so they can work for Apple. I hate their friends for letting them be part of Apple. I hate their societies for tolerating Apple within their midst. I hate their significant others for not deserting them immediately on discovering their association with Apple. I hate their neighbours for abiding them in their communities. I hate their religious leaders for letting this continue.

Metric, yes, I hate that you were ever involved with them.

And all of you out there who own Apple iPods, you too are suspect. Were you blindly drawn in? Was it the curvy corners or shiny back, or the swishy ads, or the nifty menu system? Perhaps you were blissfully ignorant. Perhaps. But if you knew, if you knew and you understood, then you too are complicit.

And that should not, and must not, be overlooked, forgotten or ever forgiven.

Just buy a Creative.

Poor Jill. Nasty ol I Pod. I hate them now too then. I hate anything with DRM anyway, so I'm an easy convert.
I work at the board of social services and there are a lot of nice people that go there but among them are crazy people. I take the ID pictures and issue them their food stamp cards and sometimes they get very impatient. I have gotten cursed at, yelled at, threatened, hit on by both women and men, and also had to call the cops to remove some of them. There's also the occasional perv who touches himself in the waiting room. I tell you people are weird.

I work at McDonalds, and even though I have come in contact with weird customers, today this guy yelled at me for such a stupid thing that I just had to roll my eyes at him.

He swiped his credit card to pay for his food and walked away before it was done going through, it didnt go through so I had to call him back up and ask him to swipe his credit card again and he goes off on me "why do you want me swipe my card!" "You should learn to tell people why you want them to swipe their cards again for next time!"

I just had to look at him in a "are you serious?" face and be like "..ok.."

And we have had two girls almost fight each other while in the drive thru because the one in front was taking to long to move up to the next window so they had to get out of their cars and go at it.

We also had a couple come in all dressed up and have a candle light fast food dinner in one of the booths once.

Well I'm a valet at a hospital. I see insane, weird people every day. Ugh. Some of the people are just...sometimes you want to run over the people with their own cars.

...sometimes you want to run over the people with their own cars.

Literally. I worked at the pumpkin patch (again... I love that place) the other day and there was some crazy person that had been standing around talking to me about his sex life for like, half an hour, and then he gave me his car keys and told me to go get it and drive it down there... which made him even more crazy... so I did it because the person in charge yelled at me to "satisfy the customers"... When I was bringing it around the corner there he was standing there with his giant pumpkin... and he smiled and waved at me... it made me SO mad. I don't usually get that mad, but I was already in a very bad mood. Wasn't actually going to run over him anyway, but there was imagination.

And their stupid!

So in work today a guy comes in wearing a mask andva knife and says empty the till, I did, we have to do a cash drop every €50 so there was only a €20 note in the till, and he took some €1's and the 50 cents, about €30 in total (which is just funny, but if he's caught he gets 10 years in prison for holding a knofe at me, can you imagine going away for 10 years cuz you stole €30!!). There were 4 customers in the shop, two come over to me, the other two just don't do anything and continue on the computers!

But the police come down, and while their asking me questions a women comes in asks for change of €5 - While I'm talking to the Gard!! I said no and continued talking and she askes can she use our phone, I look at her and the Gard asks her to be quiet!! And she leaves I mean how stupid can you be?? I'm talking to a police officer, who is very noticable with his big highlighter yellow jacket - and she asks me for change!!

I used to manage a bookshop for a friend of mine and we had a old guy who would come in two or three times a week (occasionally more than once a day) and ask to see any Elvis books we had (of which we only ever had the same three). After looking at the back cover of each one for a minute or so he would thank us and leave. Clearly the guy was a little backward from how he spoke so we used to just humour him and let him come and go as he wanted.

We didn't see him for a few weeks and then later found out he had died all alone in his flat one night and hadn't been found for almost a week. Real shame because he was a real sweet old fellow. Wouldn't have harmed a fly. I always think that he deserved a kinder end than he got.

I work for the Picture People. If you guys don't know what that is, please, let me explain.

The Picture People is what we call retail photography. Which means we're halfway between a real photography studio and a regular retail job. Which means we get a] the bitchy moms from a children's photography studio and b] the bitchy customers from an actual retail store. Which means, MESEKTET HAS LOTS OF FUN AT WORK. ...not.

I run the lab [because, yes, we're not digital, and yes, your prints will take an hour and a half, kthx]. It's not nessecarily the customers that make me crazy, it's a people I work with. Just the other day a girl was just near the end of her shift and because she wanted to get out of work so badly she let a reprint order SIT THERE FOR FORTY-FIVE MINUTES without so much as a word to me, the printer. I wasn't aware of this until my manager, who is a bloody idiot, got hounded by a very pissed off mother. The machine, which is a piece of sh-t, broke halfway through her order, and so we had to go out there and explain to this already pissed off lady that sorry, our reprint girl is a f-cking retard, and yes, you won't be getting your prints today because the machine is broken.

Let me take a moment to explain this to you, my gentle reader. Now, since I work in the lab, I have the Get Out of Jail Free Card. I don't have to ever see, talk to, or mention any customers unless I expressly wish to do so, which I NEVER DO. There is another reason for this: I have no tolerance. I've almost been written up because I've snapped at bitchy customers before. We're busy, I'm backlogged by an hour, I'm in the middle of a nine hour shift and I DON'T NEED YOUR BULLSH-T, kthnxbai. The way I see it, they're in MY store, and I'm doing MY job, and if you've had a crappy day, oh freakin' well. I so very much don't care. Take it out on somebody else and not me, kthx, because I will give your bullsh-t right back to you.

...ranting done. I promise.

hahaha! yes!! thast so me! i could never work in customer service because id bitch at the customer right back!
My customer experiences have been different...
I worked in a bakery for about a year and it was in a supermarket. Because I was in the bakery, out of sight and all, when I had to go do stock rotation in the aisle with the bread and customers would ask me where stuff is, I would never know and I always felt bad. Like I wasn't doing my job cuz I couldn't help. 🙁

OK peoples

For starters you people need to join Unions for your relevant jobs esp the retailers.... Unions are there for a good reason esp the good unions. They are there to protect you and your rights and worries. Most of you don't really seam to know what your rights actually are and you are letting your employers walk all over you. This makes me mad. I hate arrogant employers who think that the laws are always on their side. You are entitled to a certain amount of breaks according to the hours in that particular shift. You are entitled to a set working pattern and any change in that you are required to be given notice and are able to opt out. There is a legal maximum amount of working hours that an employer can ask you to do. Most retailers give employees contracts that are full of illegalities hence need to be shown to and acted upon by a union. For example ; I work for a major wine merchants and i am management in a retail outlet and my contract - well - my union said not to sign it as it is totally illegal. S**t happens so protect yourself.

Secondly, If you really hate your job that much and can't change the problems then leave. Find another job and be happier.

As for customers well - mine walk in and ask if i sell wine..... (i work in a wine merchants - d'uh)

Very good advice hon...unfortunately for our American members I have read that some of the large American retailers (W*lm*rt in particular...apparently also v litigious...hence the self-censorship) are very much anti trade unions and membership is not allowed...or at least very much discouraged. I'd be interested to know if this is still the case or if the US trade unions have improved things...

As for the UK, many employers are non-union (especially since the evil Thatcher regime 😉) and although it would be illegal to prevent someone from joining a union, an unscrupulous employer could make things very difficult for a person wanting to stick their head over that parapet, particularly if that person was on their own in their desire for worker solidarity.

and that is exactly why these employers get away with it because employees are made to fear them - but good unions are equiped to deal with those kind of employers and cost those employers serious ££££$$$$ dosh due to them not respecting basic human rights etc. If it is felt in anyway that an employee had been bullied or fired due to the union then action should be taken against the employer and a good union should fight to the death on that as it is their future at stake also..

I know this does not always work in the real world i just get so angry when people are walked all over - i used to be walked all over but now i fight the system with unions to make work a nicer place for my friends and others. I would never tollerate a kid being bullied at school so why is it ok at work??...

* i know i rant 😉 *

Right on sister! Remind me never to get on your wrong side :)
I totally agree with you Foi...it just seems that UK unions still haven't recovered from the Thatcher years and New Labour haven't been very quick to abolish some of the Tories' worst anti-union legislation...although you are spot on that most unions are very good at looking after individual members' problems and grievances...even the toothless civil service union I belong to 😉

i hear ya - i'm with USDAW retailer union - they whoop ass 😉 Unwins the infamous company i used to work for tried to take on USDAW and seriously failed. In the end they decided it was cheaper to hire new heads of depts to sort out the mess and stopped threatening staff if they mentioned a Union. Its just a shame the other offi chains did not take any notice and that there are so many retailers out there trading illegally and their staff have no idea.

Top 5 Most Insanely Annoying Customer Queries.

5. "Can I've a game for a Playstation 2 Portable Nintendo Xbox?"

4. "Can this (indicates Gameboy) play DVDs?"

[fantasy answer]Yes. The machine is smaller than the DVDs though, so of course what you have to do is break the DVD into smaller pieces until they fit into the slot[/fantasy answer]

3. "Can I get a discount, Jill?"

No. If you could, it'd be marked at the price it was discounted to, and like a gift from benevolent but stealthy pixies, you wouldn't get to appreciate the magic, unknown discount. And just because you can read my name badge doesn't make me your magical friend. It does make me want to skim your change though, because I like my name and I don't want your soiled paws all over it.

2. "How much is the four hundred and ten euro Xbox?"

And my personal favourite...

1. "I dunno what games they like. What's popular with kids?"

Games. Games are popular with kids. Now knob off and ask them what they want, or if that's too much of an effort find out how old they are, or what they like, or at the very least what format they have... Being old doesn't absolve you of basic gift buying homework.

A note on the whole union thing...a lot of the jobs in the US already have rules and laws they have to abide by similiar to a lot of union jobs [at least the retail jobs do]. I get a half hour break for ever eight hours I work, and a fifteen for every three. That kind of thing. I can call off work but it's just polite to do it at least four hours before so they can find someone else. So I just kind of feel that unions are outmoded in that respect. I didn't sign any contracts, just filled out tax paperwork and bunch of OSHA stuff because we work with chemicals.

If my boss were to break any of the laws, I'd be all up on that. It's called filing a comnplaint with the Department of Labor and taking their asses to court.

I think its interesting seeing how it works in other countries - no contracts!!?? is that a US thing?
