No, actually you are right. Homophobic does imply a "fear of". Not agreeing with the gay lifestyle or supporting their ideas makes a person a bigot. So okay, if homosexuals aren't allowed to be open about who they are in the military then neither should bigotry be allowed in the military. But then again if you ask me DADT is a form of bigotry so we're right back where we started, with only the homosexual community being discriminated against. 🙁

The word 'homophobic' is, etymologically, poorly coined. Not only does it misuse '-phobia' but it also misuses 'homo' which, separated from '-sexual', just means 'the same' (and is also a Latin root glued to a Greek suffix). So 'fear of the same' somehow becomes 'hatred of homosexuals'.
But there is a precedent: 'xenophobia'. No one should pretend that word means 'fear of foreigners', when it clearly means 'hatred of them'. Etymology tells us one thing, but words mean what they are used to mean, not what their Latin or Greek roots tell us they ought to mean.
"Heterosexism" is a much better word, as most forms of preferential treatment for one type of person over another are '-isms'.

Whatever you call it it still means that anyone who isn't straight is treated as inferior, which is just bang out of order.

In this context I was talking about people in general; I have no problem with gays serving openly in the military because I believe it's against their human right to hide it.
I just can't stand the phrase "homophobic".

So, one of my good friends is a lesbian...and I mean MEGAlesbian. You could look at her from miles away and know it, yet she's been in the military from pretty much right after we graduated high school (a little over 3 years ago). With DADT in place, why would they let her join anyway? If it's that obvious, and the military thinks it's that big of a problem, why would you let someone in who is that honest about it?

But could they kick someone out for having a photo of their same-sex partner? And what about trans-gendered people? Being from the UK I have no idea about all this, and to be honest I think it's disgusting that it's even an issue.
I may just be oblivious but I havent heard anything about anyone being kicked out because of a photo. The DONT ASK part should prevent that from being an issue.

Apparently those two people Gaga showed up with at the VMAs were discharged after the military found something gay related (i think it was an email). I think it was just a rumor though, I can't back it up for sure.
