Fox going to explore hip-hop with The Butler's Lee Daniels and Danny Strong.

The network has picked up Empire, a drama pilot from The Butler's Daniels and Strong, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The family drama is set in the world of a hip-hop empire -- think the Jay Z story. The drama will feature both original and current music. Strong, who penned the script for The Butler, which was produced and directed by Daniels, is attached to write, while Daniels will direct. From 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine, Brian Grazer will exec produce alongside Daniels, Strong and Francie Calfo. Grazer, who is passionate about hip-hop music and culture, has been wanting to do a character-driven series that gives the audience a behind-the-scenes look

I had NO IDEA that Strong wrote 'The Butler'. It was one of my favorite movies of last year, such a beautifully written and directed story.

With the up-coming third and fourth Hunger Game movies, I think it's safe to say that Strong definitely has the best career of the original cast members right now.

Good for him! I didn't see The Butler, not the kinda movie I see in the cinema, I'll probably check it out on DVD, where I can watch it in pieces.

Yeah agreed! his career is booming at the moment!

I mean, lets be honest when we first saw Jonathon in the pilot being picked on we all immediately though, there's the guy that will go on to write a hip-hop show...

Exactly. I mean, he's an Emmy-Award winning writer...poor little Jonathan seems to very long ago, lol. I think, out of every cast member, Strong would have been the one who I would have put money on never really seeing again, apart from a few odd commercials or something, as mean as it is to say. But he's done really well with guest spots (Leverage, for example) but his writing has just propelled him into super-stardom.

And you should REALLY watch 'The Butler', if for no other reason than to play 'Spot the Actor'. SO many big names hidden under a load of makeup, lol.

Yeah, I was in Turkey a few years ago and bought a DVD in a shop to watch on the flight home, it was a random movie about George Bush and the hanging Chad election scandal and it was really good, recognised the written by credit in the title and when I IMDB'd him later was shocked to realise Danny had written it. His HBO( I think?) movie about Sarah Palin was excellent.

And I love he still does acting, shows he loves his industry, and it's awesome he occasionally hangs out with Tom Lenk and Adam Bush

I know, I'm always really slow and seeing the big oscar movies, I always find them very heavy in the cinema so usually wait for DVDs

I haven't seen The Butler but I most likely will in the future! I'm extremely excited to see what he'll do with Mockinjay since I'm really looking forward to it as a fan of the series.

I'm also very glad he got picked up for his own pilot! Not something I'd watch, but I'm really happy he's that successful. Who would have guessed.

Whoa, Danny Strong wrote "The Butler"? That's awesome! 😀

I'm really happy for him. I always loved him on BtVS, and wished he would have gotten kept around for a long longer instead of Tom Lenk.
