Not necessarily instead of, but I think they had brilliant chemistry. I believed they had history and you could see it from their first scene together.

@GwenRaiden Yes, all the way, same here.
And the good part about them is additionally, they can be together with souls and without, they have a history, they have a child, they are real and realistic and they are great on the sexual, sensual and aesthetic level.

I thought they were good together as evil vampires, but not in a loving relationship or anything. And they got nuthin on Sprusilla or even Spangel...or Drula?

I agree, that Angel and Angelus had way better chemistry with Darla than Buffy or Cordy or Dru. I even like them better than Spike and Dru, who are great together, because the relationship is on a more equal footing. Dru never loved Spike the way he loved her.
