Dark Angel: Max sick?

I'm trying to remember from the series of Dark Angel. I do recall that she was in tremors, perhaps convulsing, desperate to get her pills. Was this a side effect of her genetic resequencing, or was it something else?

Can someone explain it to me, how it worked?

Yeah, she takes tryptophan to prevent seizures caused by a lack of serotonin uptake… I think. Or their bodies did not produce amino acids needed for their neurotransmitters. It was something that happened to all the ”X5’s”, so it was a product of their genetic design…

… or it was in season 1, I feel like they dropped this storyline in season 2.

But yes, she needed to take medicines or she’d have seizures, and we got to see other X5’s go through the same condition.

Just to add, the show seemed pretty anxious about this storyline, which is probably why it was downplayed by season2 (I don’t think we ever see X5 Alec suffer from the condition though he ought to by season 1 logic)

When Max needs her pills they’re like - its not drugs! Definitely not drugs! This is not withdrawl! These are harmless over the counter supplements! Not drugs! Medicine! But not real drugs!

You'd have thought that a place like Manticore be it a Private Research Facility a Government Institution or a Government contractor would get it right. There was a whole load of babies bred and had their genes altered by so-called experts. Them do-wah-diddy-diddy-doos managed to rebuild the babies so badly that several of the Chimeras thought themselves as neglected. So wrong were the poor dear little darlings that they had to take tablets to get supplement how dumb the so called experts were.
Maybe if Max's body had produced enough of that special brand of hot milk instead of the catty DNA, although, nothing was mentioned of it prior to her escape as a young kid.
The super soldier things were like a comparison between a 2000lb bomb being upgraded to an Atom bomb - but the so called experts built it without a firing mechanism. oopsie !
