Dark Horse and IDW

How would you reconcile what is quite likely going to reality conflict between the two opposing comics series? Or do you think that IDW Angel and Dark Horse Angel are somehow merge story lines at some point? It seems to me like the further Season 8 progresses, the more complicated the rift is becoming.

Someone on another forum suggested an...interesting theory that would tie together the two books. I'm not sure how plausible it is...yet. But we'll see.

The theory is that The Powers That Be sent Angel to stop Buffy and Co. because they've essentially turned into the bad guys. She has done some seemingly villainous things, like bank robbing and wreaking havoc on Tokyo... In Angel's series there was an arc where some angels from The PTB were killing humans who were destined to do bad things in the future. Angel was left yet again conflicted by the end of that.

I'm not completely gungho on that (because it would sorta ruin the message of empowerment) but it would be interesting. ^ Also it would tie things together...in a way.

I doubt there will be conflict. I still think that Twangel is a fake Angel, or a alternative universe Angel, or whatever, which means that both IDW's and Dark Horse's series don't ever have to "meet".

But I really wish that they will start collaborating, and create a unified universe, even if it's just for a mini-series. So many questions that need to be answered, so much story-potential and conflicts between characters.

I don't think any attempt will be made to overtly reconcile, because Joss isn't under any obligation to make his story gibe with the stories generated by people not under his supervision.

The IDW Angel series (since Joss left) is a professionally licensed comic, but it's not canonical. It doesn't need to be brought in line with canon any more than did the pre-season 8 comics Dark Horse used to publish.

The time gap between AtF and season 8 is not exact, and in any case, you can tell as many stories as you want without having to adhere to a strict timetable, unless you're "24."

Look at the TV show "M*A*S*H", which took 12 years to tell the story of a war that lasted less than 3.

I thought so too, but Scott Allie confirmed it's the real Angel.

Agreed! To me it's borderline moronic and absurd that Whedon's Dark Horse team in addition to Brian Lynch & Chris Ryall aren't capable of sitting down together and mapping out two issues per month. DC & Marvel do about 100x that much, and Whedon did about 20x as much work back when Angel & Buffy were on TV.

If IDW are smart they will document how Angel ended up as Twilight - they should take the information that Dark Horse will eventually give us and use it to their advantage, build on it and give us the story of Angel becoming Twilight - why the mask? Why the three belts? Give us reasons more compelling than narrative conveinience. Also, I would recommend all the writers at IDW sit down and get to know the characters that they are writing. They don't seem to know them at all and if they keep writing the crap that they are writing in the current crop of Angel comics then they won't have to worry because people will stop buying them because they in no way shape or form resemble the characters we knew from the show and then there will be no point in publishing them! (*historical comics and brian lynch excluded from this rant)
